My Spiced UP box contained a card that listed the spices included in this month’s box.
I also received a card with information about this month’s featured spice- Vindaloo Curry Spice!
The back of the card contained a recipe for this month’s kitchen-tested recipe, Pork Vindaloo. Vindaloo is a famous Indian dish that’s popular throughout the world. Vindaloo was first created in Goa, a former Portuguese colony, and is derived from carne de vine d’alhos, a Portuguese dish consisting of meat that’s been marinated in wine and garlic.
Canadian Love Rub - $8
Canadian Love Rub is a blend of garlic, black pepper, coriander, chili, salt, dill, corn oil, and oleoresin of paprika. The flavor is “peppery, salty, and full flavored.”
I haven’t had a chance to try this yet, but it smells absolutely incredible! Spiced UP recommends using it to season steak, hamburgers, potatoes, veggies, fish, chicken, or beef.
Spiced UP also included a little wooden spoon in this box. Isn’t it just so cute?!
Marjoram - $3
Marjoram is one of those herbs that I never think to buy or use, but I really like it! It’s most often used in Mediterranean cooking, and the ancient Romans considered it to be a symbol of happiness. Marjoram has a flavor that’s “sweet, subtle, delicate, and pleasant.”
Jalapeno Granules - $5
I’ve never seen dried jalapeño granules before, and I’m so excited to cook with them!
Spiced UP provides lots of suggested uses for them, but I think they just beg to be used in Mexican cuisine. I’m going to try adding them to guacamole, tacos, and maybe huevos rancheros!
This vindaloo spice blend combines coriander powder, cumin, red pepper, black pepper, cinnamon, cloves, and turmeric.
It has a “hot, powerful, warm, and intense” flavor and smells divine.
I used it to make the provided recipe for Pork Vindaloo, and I thought it was fantastic. The blend added a nice depth of flavor and the perfect level of heat (hot, but not too hot). The recipe was well-written and easy to follow, and I’m definitely going to hang onto it so I can make this dish again.
Verdict: I really enjoyed this Spiced UP box! The spices were fresh, the packaging was beautiful, and the little wooden spoon is super cute. I think the Canadian Love Rub is a great blend to send in a summer box (who doesn’t love to grill this time of year!?), the Vindaloo spice was delicious, and I’m so excited to try cooking with the Jalapeño Granules! In terms of value, the retail value of the spices in this box breaks even with the cost, but I think the curation and provided recipe add value, too.
