Snakku-June-2016-Contents

Snakku-June-2016-Info

Your first box comes wrapped in traditional Japanese furoshiki wrap. This month features snacks from the small coastal town of Kamakura. June's box contained 24 snacks.

Snakku-June-2016-1

Hato Sabure

These cookies look cute and taste delicious. The store that makes these have been making them since the 1860s and were inspired by butter cookies when Western goods first started flowing into Japan. It tastes like a Nilla wafer, but saying it's just a Nilla wafer does it injustice. The cookie is buttery and soft but also crisp. I'm happy they are the size of my palm, too!

Kurumiko

This is a solid piece of caramel and chestnut pastry that won the 27th National Japan Snack Award. It smells like pound cake and has a perfect balance of sweet and nutty flavor. I really liked it, and this is coming from someone who doesn't like nuts in her sweets!

Kintsuba

Kintsuba is a traditional snack that has been made since the 1600s. It is covered by a thin flour outer layer and the rest is sweet, sweet red bean paste. This is one of the sweetest red bean snacks I've ever eaten, and I've eaten a lot of red bean snacks!

Kamakura Hydrangea Cookie

These are multi-layer wafer cookies. The crunchy wafer balances out the light filling. According to the info card the filling is made with hydrangea essence!

Apple Honey Pie

I was expecting to see a pie like the ones from McDonald's but this is a palmier or elephant ear pastry. I didn't really taste the apple but it is light and flaky and delicious.

Snakku-June-2016-4

Calbee Wasabi Snowpea Crisps

Two words: wasabi ranch. The pea crisps are great... the flavor? Not so much. I don't like wasabi but I soldiered on anyway, until I realized it wasn't just wasabi but wasabi ranch! It was too much for me. On the bright side, my boyfriend's family loved it!

Matcha Azuki Cookie

These are matcha green tea cookie sandwiches with Hokkaido red bean cream in the middle. I really liked these, although I must admit after eating the addicting red bean paste in kintsuba nothing else has really tasted the same.

Fukkura Okoge

These senbei remind me of Quaker brand rice cakes! They are lightly glazed with soy sauce and make for a light savory snack.

Snakku-June-2016-6

Bakauke Aonori

I'm picky about seaweed flavored snacks but bakauke aonori gets my seal of approval! These are simple rice crackers flavored with seaweed pieces and are very addicting.

Bourbon Baum Rolls

Delicious! The little cake rolls are covered in a solid layer of vanilla glaze and are hollow in the center.

Snakku-June-2016-7

Flower's Kiss Candy

I've had these before (my local Asian grocery sells them too) and like them. The info card says they are creamy, apricot-plum flavored candies made with flower essence. Creamy candies are my weak spot so I'm very happy Snakku included five.

Verdict: Once again I love my Snakku box! My favorite is the kintsuba. Oftentimes it's hard to appreciate the history or tradition that's behind these snacks. I think Snakku does a good job giving subscribers a peek into that. The cost breakdown is always difficult to do with international snacks. There are 24 items total but for calculation purposes I counted the five Flower's Kiss candies as one item (so I'm calculating for 20 items), which equates to about $1.95 per snack. It's a relatively pricey box. That said, this subscription is a unique snack experience with top-notch curation and I would recommend it.

Yay Nancy such a fun review! I appreciate that you try it all and are very descriptive, as I get a nice sense of the box contents. I am hoping the price point comes diwn a bit more and keeping my eye on the reviews. Too bad it wasn’ t a bit more customizable but I love the element of surprise too.

I think these boxes are beautiful and have been following them on their website before they started reviews here. Only the first box is wrapped liked she stayed in the article but the boxes are really expensive because of the exclusive snacks that they contain. So I will probably keep reading the reviews until Snakku expands and is able to buy in bulk to drive down the box costs.

Thanks for taking photos of the outside of the wrappers AND what’s inside! The packaging is interesting, but the goodies are the really interesting part!

You’re most welcome, and thanks for feedback! I’ll try to take more in the future– it’s sometimes hard to stop myself from eating everything as soon as it’s open 😛

Adeline

Does it come wrapped up like the pictures?

Nancy Su

Hi Adeline, yes it does! (No way I can wrap something that prettily lol)

Just to note, the “Apple” Honey Pie’s wrapper just says “Honey Mini Pie.” No mention of apples at all. Perhaps it was a last-minute substitution?

Hmm interesting! Thanks for the observation.
