RobbVices-June-2016-Booklet2

The booklet is very well designed, and it includes beautiful photographs and lots of information about the included products.

RobbVices-June-2016-Booklet3

This month’s box features two great products from Oregon: Bitterman Salt Company and Lompoc Brewery!

RobbVices-June-2016-Booklet4

There are also a couple of recipes provided this month.

RobbVices-June-2016-SaltBlock1

9"x2" Himalayan Salt Round- $48

I’ve wanted a Himalayan salt block like this FOR YEARS, but I never got around to buying one because it always seemed like such an indulgence. When I opened up this box, I swear I did a little celebratory salt block dance.

This block is large (definitely large enough for a couple of steaks or fish filets), and it weighs a ton! Out of sheer curiosity, I decided to weigh it on my kitchen scale— it clocks in at over 10 pounds!!

RobbVices-June-2016-SaltBlock2

Salt blocks like this can be heated and used as a cooking surface for meat and veggies or as a presentation board for things like fruit, cheese, and charcuterie. Either way, the flavor of the salt will subtly season what’s placed on top. I haven’t done too much research yet into salt block cooking, but according to the provided booklet I should be able to heat the salt block directly on top of my gas stovetop. Mark Bitterman (the founder of Bitterman Salt Company) spent an entire year exploring the different ways to use blocks like this in cooking, and I’m now VERY tempted to purchase his Salt Block Cooking Cookbook!

RobbVices-June-2016-SaltRocks

Himalayan Pink Salt Rocks- $2

These smaller Himalayan salt rocks can be grated on top of dishes as a finishing salt, but they’re so pretty I’m not sure I want to destroy them! I might place them on my bookshelf for now…

RobbVices-June-2016-FleurdeSel

Bitterman's Fleur de Sel (2.5 lb.)- $12

Fleur de Sel is one of my favorite “fancy salts,” and I love using it in desserts (I think it goes really well with sweet things) and on top of unsalted butter. Robb Vices included this in the box because it’s a multi-purpose salt that’s great for everyday use. Traditionally, Fleur de Sel is sourced from Brittany in France, but Bitterman’s version is harvested from Guatemala.

RobbVices-June-2016-SaltSet1

The Meadow Salt Set- $48

This set is absolutely adorable! I love the packaging and the cork toppers!

RobbVices-June-2016-SaltSet2

While Fleur de Sel is a great everyday salt, the salts in this set are specialty varieties with more specific flavor profiles.

RobbVices-June-2016-SaltSet3

The set contains the following salts:

  • Pinot Noir Sea Salt
  • Buttery Popcorn Salt
  • Chocolate Salt
  • Bali Reef Salt
  • Fleur de Hell Salt
  • Kala Namak Salt

RobbVices-June-2016-Beer1

Lompoc C-Note India Pale Ale (1 pint 6 fluid ounces)- $4

There are plenty of craft breweries in the Pacific Northwest, and lots of different IPAs to choose from. Robb Vices decided to send this particular brew because they found “none to be as refreshing when paired with perfectly salted and savory foods as a C-Note India Pale Ale from Lompoc Brewing.”

RobbVices-June-2016-Beer2

There’s definitely a piney intensity from the hops, but I think this IPA has great balance. It’s herby and sweet, with a nice caramel flavor. I’m a fan!

Verdict: This Robb Vices box was a big giant win for me! I’m so excited that I now have my very own Himalayan salt block, and I can’t wait to play around with different ways to cook and serve on it. I love the salt set, salt rocks, beer, and Fleur de Sel, too! The retail value of the items in this box comes to $114, which is good considering the cost of the box. It’s not nearly as high as some of Robb Vices’ previous box values, but I can’t begin to imagine how expensive this box was to ship. (If I had to guess, I’d say the entire box probably weighed in at around 17-20 pounds!)

Any idea what the “bonus gift” is?

I’m also curious about the bonus gift. A 12-month prepay is a hefty expense.

I found out about this fabulous box on June 5th – too late to get the Father’s Day box. BUT…. they still sent my husband (I ordered the box for him) the wooden sunglasses which was a total surprise. And even better (for me) – the glasses were too small for him, so…I have them!

This was impressive, thoughtful and well curated though I already have a block and various salts so it wouldn’t be as much of a win for me. Can they call it Fleur De Sel if it doesn’t come from France? I could see opening this up and feeling the excitement of discovery–the packaging is classy and the contents wonderfully surprising.

I am so dropping Hampton’s Lane and picking up this one.

Got this for my daughter’s BF who has virtually everything. He was blown away by May’s box and will be again when he sees this one. Beautifully curated, impressive presentation and great customer service. My own monthly sub box total is far more than this one alone but Robb Vices is a winner of a gift.

We subscribed last month, so we won’t get our first box until the August box, but MAN how I wish this was our first box. LOVE. My hubby has a great love for salts like this and I would’ve loved everything in this box. Bravo, Robb’s Vices!

I got the salt block from Bespoke Post along with the Bitterman book – it is well worth picking up, The book explains what can cause a block to have a problem when heated.

My husband and I love to rest our steaks on ours for 20 minutes before cooking – the steaks come up closer to temp and pick up just the right level of salt. After getting the block I actually switched us over to Bitterman’s Fleur de Sel for our table salt and will never go back – we use a LOT less (good for my husband’s blood pressure) and it tastes so much better!

I really wish I subscribed to this one….

What a tremendous box! It’s everything I think the best sub boxes should be…high end items that you might not buy for yourself on your own but will almost surely love using. BRAVO!!

This box looks fabulous, but I can’t help but lament it has only 1 beer to its 9 different salts. Looks like you need 8 more beers!!

Keep loving my boxes. I’m going to use the salt block for cold items like meats/cheeses. I made the mistake of reading about how these can explode during cooking. I would be willing to try it on a grill since it will be contained and outside, but I don’t want to worry about it exploding in the kitchen where it will go everywhere. But, people have nothing but good things to say about cooking on a salt block and they tell you how to properly heat it to avoid any issues. I placed my salt rocks on my bookshelf, haha!

I’ve never heard of them exploding. I got a salt block in Bespoke Post and heating it up worked just fine. No Issues.

Adele

The more I read I wonder if they properly heated it up or if theirs were defective, but people say it basically sent pink shrapnel through their kitchens. On the Bitterman site they recommend not heating the salt block in the oven because it could damage the block and/or oven.

Lindsey Morse

Oh wow! I had no idea salt blocks could explode during cooking! Thanks so much for the heads up, Adele! I’m definitely going to have to do some research before attempting to heat it on my kitchen stove…

I can’t be the only person that saw that salt on the black paper and thought they were talking about an entirely different vice, right?

Too funny! Imagine that review!

Adele

Haha, I didn’t until my sister pointed it out to me!
