Lemon Essential Oil – 1 fl oz, value: $6.49 (on sale for $4.68)
Lemon is purifying and revitalizing. Its aromatherapy benefits are energizing and uplifting. Lemon is also great for making cleaning products with thanks to its natural antiseptic properties. I love using a drop in my laundry and it’s also my go-to for getting goo and sticker residue off of things. The info card gives a recipe for using it in a fabric softener.
Lavender Essential Oil – 1 fl oz, value: $11.99 (on sale for $7.70)
Lavender is a great, multi-purpose oil. Aside from aromatherapy (lavender is calming), you can dilute it with a carrier oil and use it on the bottoms of your feet or a drop on your pillow for sleep aid. Diluted, it can also help soothe burns and itchy/painful bug bites, cuts, etc. And it also has some antibacterial property to it. In general, it’s known for being calming and soothing. The lavender info card tells you how to make a lip balm with it.
Eucalyptus Essential Oil – 1 fl oz, value: $5.99 (on sale for $3.20)
Eucalyptus is a good oil to have for various practical uses. Aromatherapy-wise, it’s great for helping with colds and clearing sinuses (when my husband’s feeling stuffy I always diffuse some in our bedroom). You can also use it in a hot bath or shower to open sinuses and help drainage of congestion. Also, if you mix it with peppermint oil and a carrier oil like coconut or jojoba oil you can use it in place of Vicks Vapor Rub. The info card gives a recipe for a Eucalyptus shower cleaner!
Now Solutions Ultrasonic USB Oil Diffuser – value: $26.99 (on sale for $19.49)
I love collecting different diffusers (I’m convinced I need one in every room), so I loved that their start kit includes one. I also think it’s a super great thing to send out with subscribers’ first boxes because diffusing/aromatherapy is one of the most simple and fun ways to use essential oils! It came with the oils, the USB/power cable, and a little brush, I suppose to clean it with? I’m not sure.
This diffuser is great! Being USB, the cord can hook into your computer for use at a cubicle or desk, or you can use an adapter for an outlet, which is what I do. We have a few extras from various phone charging cables. The end that plugs into the diffuser is a micro USB, so in a pinch you could also just use the cable to charge your (android) phone or something, too.
And possibly my favorite part is that it lights up in different colors! You push the button to turn it on, and it cycles through color light. You can then push the button again to turn off the light, and push it again to turn it off. It’s also pretty quiet!
Verdict: My first impressions of the Pure Formulas Essentials Oil Box are great! This Summer Starter Kit contains 3 oils I consider to be “must-haves” – ones I recommend for beginners because they are such staples and so versatile for many uses. I also love the little diffuser! I also like that I am familiar with and like/trust the brand of oils they distribute – NOW Essential Oils. You can read about their company, standards, and oil quality here. FYI – They exclusively purchase food-grade oils and every oil (except jasmine) is derived through natural distillation or cold pressing methods.
I also like how the box (and oil brand) focuses on aromatherapy uses/DIY uses for oils. I know that oils can be controversial (some people claim magical medicinal uses, and some people claim they’re just nice smelling oils), so focusing on aromatherapy and DIY is a nice, practical middle ground. I think everyone can get something out of this, no matter where on that spectrum you may fall.
As far as value goes, I received a $51.46 value ($35.07 with sale prices) for $37.50 – and just a reminder: you pay $37.50 up front and that covers the cost of your starter kit (the 3 oils and diffuser) and then are charged $18.75 per box/quarter when they ship.
