According to the PourMore website, they “include literature with your monthly box explaining the details and heritage of that particular spirit. You are sure to enjoy not only the beverage but the acquisition of history with your spirit each month.” I didn’t receive anything in my box apart from the Scotch, though (and a lot of packing peanuts).

Since I didn’t receive any information with my shipment, I decided to do my own research about the bottle I received.

Compass Box’s Spice Tree Blended Scotch is well regarded and somewhat controversial. It’s a blended malt made with Highland whiskies, and it’s aged in special casks made from French oak.

The blend was originally released in 2005, and it was made using a barrel aging technique commonly used in winemaking. For the second maturation, Compass Box placed their blend in whisky barrels with new French oak “inner staves.” Since this method had never before been used for whisky making, it drew the attention of the Scotch Whisky Association, who threatened legal action if new techniques weren’t adopted instead. After experimenting with new methods, Compass Box developed a different way of achieving The Spice Tree’s flavors and complexity, and they re-released the blend in 2009.

Since it’s creation, The Spice Tree has been winning awards. Most notably, in 2015 it was named Best Blended Malt Scotch as the San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

Compass Box is surprisingly transparent when it comes to providing information about their blends. (Usually, Scotch producers keep this information under lock and key!) The following infographic shows how the blend is created:

As the name suggests, The Spice Tree “is a rich, intense malt whisky redolent of baking spices and layered with toasty oak accents that complement the underlying distillery character.” I typically tend to gravitate towards single malts vs. blends, and I like that PourMore has sent me something that I wouldn’t purchase myself. I easily picked up on flavors of clove, cardamom, and nutmeg, and I think it would be a lot of fun to pair this Scotch with baked goods! I love the idea of serving a Thanksgiving dessert course (maybe pumpkin spice cake?) with a whisky pairing!

The Verdict: I’m very pleased with this month’s featured Scotch! It’s delicious, and I like that PourMore sent me something a little outside of my comfort zone. I’m disappointed that I didn’t receive any supplemental information from PourMore, but it looks like this is an issue they are working to address. In the comments section of last month’s review, PourMore mentioned that they’ve received feedback from multiple subscribers about missing info and that they’re working to address it. In terms of value, this bottle falls short of the subscription cost; however, it’s important to note that the bottle I received last month came in significantly over the subscription cost. Again, PourMore addressed this in their comments last month. They said, “Some months we may find a rare or special whiskey that is less than the cost of the box and other months a bottle that is well above the cost of the box. We try to average this out over a six month period.” As long as it averages out over time, I’m okay with some of the shipments coming in a little under the subscription cost. So far, the value has averaged out in my favor, and I’m extremely pleased with the Scotch I’ve received!

“Ships to all US states except 26 of them.” LOL. So, ships to only 48% of states in the US. Somehow, it seems weird to say “Ships to all US states except” and then list half of them… They may want to rethink the way they phrase it.

LOL, I actually counted the states it doesn’t ship to also! And thought it odd that this was the wording they chose. I sure hope they add some literature because this sub is certainly about the curation if nothing else.

Thanks for going the extra mile and doing some research, perhaps you could be added to their payroll! 🙂
