Top Chips Maker and Slicer Set – Value $6.25

I’m not 100% sure how I feel about this. I’m trying to really get the kids off the junk food. On the one hand, this seems like it would make chips that are less unhealthy because of a reduction in fat, but on the other hand, microwaving potatoes seems like it would probably rob them of whatever sparse nutrients they had to begin with. I guess I’ll just have to try it out and see. Maybe it would work with sweet potatoes!

mystery-awesome-jul-glass

mystery-awesome-jul-glass-2

DCI Happy Hour Glass – Value $7.89

This is so deliciously gimmicky, with a pint glass on one end and a shot glass on the other! Am I a horrible person for immediately wondering how I would get the shot into the beer? I hope it’s only because I am good at spotting design flaws.

mystery-awesome-jul-bulbs

Lighting Science 60W Equivalent Soft White GP19 Non-Dimmable LED Light Bulb (4-Pack) – Value $23.75

Wow, who would have thought that the most valuable item in this package would be a 4-pack of light bulbs? The reason is that they provide the equivalent of a 40-watt bulb for 6-watts of energy, so they could result in a fairly big savings on electricity, and they last 20x longer than regular bulbs. I did try one out and it seems bright enough, and it worked, so these will definitely come in handy!

mystery-awesome-jul-hammock

mystery-awesome-jul-hammock-3

Ultra Light Parachute Hammock w/ Built In Travel Bag – Value $12.49 (originally $39.99)

It’s a hammock! I absolutely love hammocks! I am so happy to have received this! It’s travel-ready, too, so we can take it with us when we go camping.

Verdict: Usually my Monthly Mystery Box of Awesome has more items in it, but the (original) retail value of everything totals about the same amount as usual (about $82), so I’m happy with that. I am very excited about the hammock, curious about the bulbs, and everything else was kind of just fine. I think this is a really fun box, and a great way to discover products you otherwise might never have even known about!

What do you think of the Monthly Mystery Box of Awesome? What did you get?

  1. I still haven’t received my July box and it’s August 7th! After four emails to customer service, with proof that I was charged for the box on 6/29, all I know is that they are “confused” about how this happened! Still no resolution. Anyone have any experience with their customer service? May have to cancel this if they can’t get their act together. I have two lights out and am anxious to get those bulbs, lol!

  2. I have one of those chip makes and omg I love it. I like getting corn tortillas, cutting them up, and using that thing to make low sodium tortilla chips.

  3. I got the Hammock…the Air Pump…Lightbulbs…and a 3 in 1Memory foam battery operated Massager for the lower body.. I.e. Legs..thighs..feet. It is designed to fit both legs etc at the same time. Luv my first box!

  4. These boxes sort of remind me of the old Fancy mystery boxes. I got such random stuff but most of it was somehow usable (except that vinyl cling quote they gave out constantly!).

  5. Pampered Chef actually had a 2 pack of those microwave potato chip makers a year or two ago? and they actually worked surprisingly well! I liked them with apples, actually.

  6. If anyone is swapping for / or swapping the potato chip maker…Its expensive to ship, weighs over 2 pounds, and will not fit into a flat rate envelope, might fit into a medium flat rate flat box. Paid $6.85 to ship it not to far away, and that was the cheapest shipping, and that was only that item. Dont think it will be much cheaper then that to ship anywhere. One thing about these boxes is the value is great, yet they always seem to send many items that are a pain to ship/swap.

  7. Fun fact – microwaving food is actually the best cooking method for retaining nutrients/antioxidants in vegetables (except cauliflower). I learned this in culinary school. 🙂

    • This makes sense, as so many nutrients and flavonoids are water soluble and will leach out when steaming or boiling veggies.

  8. I wasn’t totally impressed with this month’s box. I laughed when I pulled out light bulbs. My 9 year old daughter was excited to see light bulbs, though. After reading this review, now knowing the cost of the bulbs, I guess I’m okay. I have a long sturdy tree branch, so I’m going to attempt to rig the hammock to each end of the beach for my daughter. I hadn’t tried the slicer microwave thing yet. The glass will be gifted.

  9. I signed up for the mini and just got my first one. I was pretty disappointed. I got a package of off label auto fill balloons, an empty Siracha hot sauce bottle that you can clip on your keychain so i guess you can fill it yourself with Siracha so you have it on the go (which I don’t use, and I imagine at some point will leak/explode) and one of those vegetable peelers that make them into like noodles or whatever, but it’s a small one in just a Brown plain box. Not a good month or value for me.

  10. Also, I noticed recently that this box and Peaches & Petals seem to be related, or owned by the same parent company perhaps. Shipping and billing info for both boxes shows up as Jammin Butter. I suspect this hammock was the same one recently offered as a sign up bonus for P&P, and my mini box of awesome this month included the same rainy day puzzle I received in my April P&P box.

    • I noticed the same thing this morning. When I saw the review and the hammock picture was the same I went to the website and sure enough if you scroll to the bottom on the page it lists the same company info as Peaches & Petals. I’ve never signed up for this mystery box but I recently signed up for my 1st P&P box. I’m still waiting to receive it. They sent me shipping info a week ago. Suppose to be delivered today according to UPS site but they’ve never received it. Only created label. Not feeling like a good first impression so far. The advert for the hammock deal that I joined because of stated the RV was around $79 so it’s a bit disheartening for me to see they have it listed on their own site for sale less than $14. I went from feeling like I had signed up for a good promo to feeling like being duped. As I type this I’m certain I’ve convinced myself into cancelling before I even open my first box. That’s a first for me!

      • And fingers crossed I get a better color choice for my hammock. The bright blue and red just isn’t my thing. Hoping for a muted color or earth tones

      • Their August spoiler is the laptop bag for $44 yet they are selling it on that 13 Deals site for $19 with free shipping.

Golla bags are nice but a white bag is really a pain to keep clean. Could be why it is on this clearance site.

      • Mattie, I don’t blame you for being disappointed about the shipping and hammock value. As for the shipping though, I’ve had issues this month with almost every single subscription box. P&P is notorious for longer shipping waits in the first place. What some people don’t realize is that they ship in waves, based on your billing date. You can change your billing date if you want to receive your box earlier in the month. Otherwise, UPS and FedEx both announced service delays due to the RNC and DNC. My PSMH and Pet Gift Box both got lost. I still haven’t received either one. So for July at least, I’m more inclined to blame shipping issues on the carrier rather than the subscription company. I’ve had P&P for about six months now and a couple of the boxes were underwhelming, but some of them were more impressive to me than PSMH (which I tend to think of as the pinnacle of affordable lifestyle boxes). AND it’s half the cost of PSMH. Have you looked at previous boxes? I think they stick to their theme really well, and they send out really unique items I don’t see in other sub boxes. Anyway, I hope you get a hammock you like, and aren’t too disappointed when you finally receive your box!

        • I tend to think that the shipping companies and USPS have lots of workers on vacation in the summer, too. Everything seems to take longer and comes at different times then normal.

        • Thanks! I appreciate your input. It made me feel a bit better 🙂 I guess I’ll sit on my hands for a little while and see how I feel once the box actually arrives.. FOMO has me curious about the Augest Spoilers

        • What the HECK is PSMH??????

          • PopSugar Must Have 🙂

  11. I also thought this box seemed pretty empty, compared to previous months. I switched from the regular to the mini, so this will be my last $24.99 box and they didn’t do a very good job of convincing me otherwise. I got all the same items, except I got an inflatable raft air pump instead of the beer glass. It would be much more useful if I’d also received an inflatable raft ha! I have no idea what to do with it. Anyway, the light bulbs are super useful of course, and I’m sure I’ll love the hammock as soon as I can figure out how to rig it up on my balcony. As for the chip slicer and tray, I’m going to try it with zucchini tonight! I was going to slice it up and use my dehydrator, but I’m willing to sacrifice half a zucchini just to try this little tray. The mandolin seems kind of cheap, but it’s always nice to have a back-up slicing method. If the tray actually works with potatoes – I’ll believe it when I see/eat it – it is surely useful for all kinds of slice-able veggies!

    • We got the air pump too. Not exactly sure what we are going to do with that, but everything else was useful. Guess I will throw the pump and the microwave chip maker in the garage sale pile.

  12. I was a little disappointed in this month’s box…but I think it’s personal preference. I am also used to getting more items in the box, and it’s always fun to unpack, but this month was kind of blah in that respect. I will use the glass, using the shot glass part as the stand for it LOL, but the potato chip thing just seems odd. Not even sure who to give that to, so I might just donate it. I love the idea of a hammock–but I don’t have two trees in my yard close enough to tie it to. My parents might have some, so I am going to see if they want it. They also go RV camping, so they might use it there. The lightbulbs are the only thing I will truly use as intended and it’s just hard to get excited about lightbulbs.

However, the other boxes I have gotten have always been so much fun. I love this sub, just not this particular box.

  13. I opened the box with a friend, and I said the same thing about the glass, “how do you get this one in the other one?!” She laughed at me and said it was an either or situation lol. So it’s not just you! 😀 😀 I also felt a bit silly about being so excited about light bulbs!

  14. “Am I a horrible person for immediately wondering how I would get the shot into the beer? I hope it’s only because I am good at spotting design flaws.”…. lol 🙂
