EsianMall-SnackBox-June-2016-Info2

The info card lists the snacks this month.

Crispy Olive Oil Seaweed

I'm not a huge fan of dried seaweed. This meets my expectations-- dried crispy seaweed with a hint of olive oil, nothing more. My boyfriend finished the contents pretty quickly though.

Hi Chew Banana Chews

Hi Chew are taffy, Starburst-like candies. These taste like artificial banana candy and not actual banana, which is more preferable for me anyway.

Bourbon Petit Cookies

I love chocolate chip cookies, so all the better to have them in bite sized form too. They are not sharply sweet as some cookies can be, so this is very delicious.

Panda Chocolate Cookie

These poor chocolate-covered cookies did not survive the heat during shipping. I'm pretty bummed about it too because every single time I receive this cookie in a box (this is my third one) it arrives melted. I'm never one to waste food so I ate it anyway!

Peko Crunch Milk Candy

These are sweet, milk-flavored hard candies with creamy, milk-flavored filling in the center. They taste so good! I really must get my hands on more.

A candid look into the sad lives of panda cookies in summertime.

Potato Flavored Snack

This is available at my local Asian grocery! They look similar to shrimp chips but don't really have a distinctive flavor. Despite the lack of flavor I couldn't stop eating them. Have you ever unconsciously grabbed potato chip after potato chip, as if in a haze, until you finished a whole bag? That's what happened to me.

Koala Matcha Cookie

I've had these cookies before and love them. Each thin, crunchy outer cookie holds sweet matcha cream on the inside. If you like matcha snacks then this would be up your alley.

EsianMall-SnackBox-June-2016-4

Fujiya Look 24C Snack

Another chocolate, another sad melted mess. These are individually wrapped dark chocolates. They are delicious but I could have saved some of my dignity if I didn't have to scrape melted chocolate from inside the wrappers like some sort of scavenger.

Baked Rice Cracker

These are senbei or puffed rice crackers that have frosted sugar coating on top. The info card doesn't mention this but they are from the brand Want Want, which is a brand I have loved and eaten for years. I had some nostalgia while munching on these.

EsianMall-SnackBox-June-2016-5

Glico Watering KissMint Gum

Aside from the interesting name, this is a regular pack of gum. In fact, it's packaged like Wrigley's gum. It's sour and not too long lasting.

Doraemon Choco Snack

These are chocolate-covered chocolate puffs and taste like Cocoa Puffs cereal. They're really addicting too!

Maeil Coffee Drink

This is an on-the-go sized cup of caramel macchiato. I like that it comes with a straw!

EsianMall-SnackBox-June-2016-6

Jagabee Potato Crisps

If you've ever wondered what doubly-fried french fries taste like, try these potato chips. They're cut like fries and look like fries but the moment you bite down you know you've been deceived. That isn't to say they're not tasty, though, but they are slightly too greasy for my liking.

Shin Instant Ramen

Ramen is everything a lazy girl could ask for when she doesn't want to cook. Unfortunately this one is spicy so I must pass. That said, I've had this brand of ramen before and it tastes great!

Pokemon Rice Seasoning

This is a four-pack seasoning for rice (and it comes with a Pokemon sticker). It's hard to tell what's really in it. There are salty grains, bits of dried seaweed, colorful breadcrumb dots, and crunchy Pikachu squares. The seasoning tastes mostly salty and savory, but I think it's as much about adding texture to plain white rice as it is flavor.

Verdict: I had a jolly good time exploring my EsianMall SnackBox! Half the snacks are unfamiliar things, while the other half are snacks I can find at my local Asian grocery. My favorite discovery is the Bourbon Petit Cookies! I counted 15 types of snacks, so the cost breakdown is $2.33 per snack (I'm counting loose candies by their type, not quantity). While this is a good value for a food box, I know I can find many of the snacks locally, and they would be cheaper. However, this is great as a discovery snack box or for people who don't have easy access like me.

Fun fact: the “banana” flavoring in banana candies is actually based on a now extinct variety of the fruit that died out because of a fungus. The bananas we eat now were resistant to that fungus and survived.

Yeah, and it’s really easy to synthesize the banana flavor compound in the lab. It’s something we did in like first semester organic chemistry.

Also, pretty much all banana and plantain varieties are now threatened by a similar fungus. Most are clones and there is a real danger that they could be wiped out.

They really should have noted on the info card or somewhere that you need to add hot water to the Pokémon rice seasoning. You can see the correct end product on the front packaging–a green tea-flavored rice gruel. It probably doesn’t taste as good to eat it straight out of the package.

That makes more sense haha, thanks! I used mine as rice topping totally thinking it was like Furikake.

haha yeah it’s Ochazuke seasoning! It’s really yummy and is a great breakfast food. But you do have to add hot water.
