The box included a letter reminding us that subscribers can buy more of the box items for $1 online. The back of the letter included a list of items in the box.
A note on prices: Items like this can come from a variety of different suppliers at many price points depending on how many you buy, etc. I couldn’t find a lot of these exact beads from common sources (e.g., Fire Mountain Gems) and it’s of questionable value to pick something similar because a slight difference in grading or size or material and you are looking at half or double the price (or an even greater difference). Even different colors of the same size and shape of glass beads are priced differently due to materials needed to make the colors!
2 mm Czech Fire Polish in Light Topaz (49-50)
These are so small! One of these days I’m going to have a huge collection of tiny fire polished beads and I’ll be able to make something cool.
8 mm Glass Lentil in Sienna Travertine (25)
These look like stone even though they’re glass, plus they’re lentil-shaped, so I like them.
Czech Glass Ammonite Beads (4)
I think these are really neat. Not sure what I’ll do with them yet, but I like them.
12 mm Czech Glass Fire Polish in Olive (6)
Somewhere in my stash I have some lovely faceted teardrops in this same color. I would love to find them one day and use them together with these in a necklace…
Hand Cut Chinese Crystal Heart (3)
I like big glass and crystal shapes like this. And all the sparkle and the way they catch the light! I might buy more of these.
Pewter Thai Spacer (20)
Silver spacers are always needed. These will get used.
4 mm Czech Glass Druk Bead (50)
These were rolling everywhere so most of them stayed in the bag. Clear glass rounds are useful.
8 x 6 mm Chinese Crystal in Aqua AB (20)
I like this type of bead a lot. I have also been gravitating towards this color lately so I have quite a bit more in my collection that I should be able to use with these.
Brass Head Pins (25)
I’ve been into the antique bronze/brass metal finish a lot lately so these will come in handy. I have some matching clasps and chain already, I know.
Pewter Bead Cap w/Antique Copper (6)
I may end up buying more of these as I do like the color and style, but would want more of them to make a finished piece.
4 mm Czech Glass Pearls in Light Pistachio (49-50)
This is a spring-y color for me. I think I have something similar in some other pastel colors so maybe I could make a necklace with all of them together.
4 mm Czech Glass Pearls in Vanilla (49-50)
A good basic to use on their own or as spacers with larger beads.
4 mm Czech Glass in Turquoise (49-50)
Another good basic. I am thinking these would look nice with some gold accents.
Czech Glass Seed Beads (3 tubes)
For me, these are like earring-sized amounts. I’m also considering ordering more and doing some kind of irregular peyote stitch bracelet (there was a term for this that I used to know back in college but that was a loooong time ago).
6 mm Swarovski Cube (2)
Love these. Want a whole bunch more. Swarovski shapes are so expensive (comparatively speaking).
6 mm Swarovski Bicone (7)
Red is my favorite color and these are just lovely.
6 mm Preciosa Squaredelles in Jet AB 2X (3)
These are cool. I can’t decide whether to use them as spacers in a pearl bracelet or for something else. But I like them a lot.
Here is a necklace I made using some of the beads from the box. Since the hearts were all different colors, I decided to make a simple Y necklace. It is sometimes a little difficult to coordinate the beads in this box – they do seem a little random at times – but I hang on to them and often find them useful in constructing jewelry for my other bead box reviews.
Verdict: I did not calculate a value for the July 2016 Dollar Bead Box, for reasons explained above. There was a lot of fun stuff in there, and mostly smaller in size (my preference, as I wear more delicate jewelry). I think this is the first time I’ve gotten head pins in a bead box, but I use head pins all the time and am happy to have more in this particular color. There usually isn’t a theme with this box, and the beads can be all over the place in terms of color or style, but then again, if you have a great idea for using a whole lot of the same bead, you can always get more from the Dollar Bead Box shop. At any rate, if you average it out, each item comes in at a bit more than a $1, which I think is a pretty good value. And there are a couple of items I liked enough that I will probably reorder. So I’m happy with the box.
Please note that no directions are given and you have to supply your own needles, stringing materials, tools, and findings.
