BoxwallaFood-June-2016-Box

Boxwalla is a subscription box company dedicated to introducing subscribers to the best in food, books, film, and green beauty. They curate bi-monthly boxes in each of those four categories.

BoxwallaFood-June-2016-Open

Boxwalla's Food Box introduces subscribers to gourmet food products from small-batch producers across the US. The curators at Boxwalla seek out the best American artisanal products, and they only include their favorite products from any given category.

I’m really impressed with Boxwalla’s packaging. The box is sturdy and beautiful, and it’s crafted from tree-free paper by a small company in Rajasthan, India.

This box was sent to us at no cost for review. (Check out the subscription review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

BoxwallaFood-June-2016-Card

Boxwalla's Food Box includes a card that explains the box’s theme and describes the products selected to represent it. The theme for this box is “Wandering Woman.”

This is a review of Boxwalla’s June Food Box. Subscriptions for June are currently closed, so, if you sign up now, your first box will arrive in August. (The cutoff date for each box is the 15th of the preceding month. So, to receive the August box, your order will need to be placed by July 15th.)

BoxwallaFood-June-2016-Chocolate

Cherrywood Drinking Chocolate by Treehouse Chocolate Co. (2 packs)- $7

I received a sampler pack of Treehouse Chocolate in a Mantry box I reviewed last year, and I really enjoyed it! I always think of hot chocolate as a winter beverage, but I suppose it’s a summer camping staple, too. Personally, I’m not much of a camper (I was jealous as a kid that my Girl Scout troop wasn’t more like Troop Beverly Hills!), but I’ve been thinking about planning a dessert night for some girlfriends— it might be fun to make hot chocolate and s’mores!

BoxwallaFood-June-2016-Achaar

Brooklyn Delhi Tomato Achaar (6 oz.)- $8.75

Tomato Achaar is a relish made from tomatoes, tamarind, a mix of Indian spices, red chiles, unrefined cane sugar, and sesame oil. Brooklyn Delhi’s version is a 2016 Good Food Awards winner, and I really like it! Achaar is traditionally eaten with rice, curry, dal, and yogurt, but it can also be used as a sandwich spread, in salad dressing, or mixed into guacamole and eaten with chips.

BoxwallaFood-June-2016-Primo

Primo Berry Pasilla Preserves (4.5 oz.)- $5.50

This jam is made from vine-ripened berries and Pasilla chiles. This is another product that I’ve sampled before thanks to subscription boxes, and I really like how the berry and chile flavors work together. The jam is sweet and bright with a nice level of heat.

BoxwallaFood-June-2016-Malaysian

Auria's Malaysian Kitchen Lime Leaf Sambal (8 oz.)- $9.99

Auria’s sambal can be used as a condiment, marinade, dip, or spread. It’s mild and has a nice zippy lime flavor. I don’t have a lot of experience with Malaysian cuisine, so I’ve been doing some research about cooking with sambals. I think I’ve decided to use this sambal to make a Malaysian tofu and veggie dish. I can’t wait to try it!

BoxwallaFood-June-2016-Caramels

McCrea's Caramels Flavor Family (5.5 oz.)- $15.95

This was the spoiler item for this month’s Boxwalla Food Box, and I was so excited to get my hands on it! First of all, I love the packaging. It’s lovely and also a great way to protect the caramels inside from getting squished.

BoxwallaFood-June-2016-Caramels2

This is a great way to sample all of the different caramels in the McCrea’s “flavor family”: Dark Roasted Mocha, Ginger Fusion, Rosemary Truffle Sea Salt, Highland Scotch, Black Lava Sea Salt, Tapped Maple, Cape Cod Sea Salt, Classic Vanilla, Deep Chocolate. So far, I’ve tried the Black Lava Salt, Ginger Fusion, and Highland Scotch, and they were all fantastic.

Verdict: I really liked all of the items in this month’s Boxwalla Food Box! I think it contained a great mix of different items, and I’m really excited to cook with the sambal and sample all of the different caramel flavors. In terms of value, the total retail price of the items in this box comes to approximately $47, which just about breaks even with the cost of the box.

What do you think about Boxwalla? Have you tried their food, film, book, or green beauty boxes yet?
