BarkBox is a subscription box for dogs. It’s the most popular dog subscription box. You’ve seen the small dog version, but since they customize based on dog size, we thought you might like to see what you’d get if you have a large dog, so this is a review of the “Big & Bold” box for a 50+ pound dog. (My dog, Nyx, is a Rottweiler who currently weighs about 84 pounds.)

The theme this month was “World Chompians” in honor of the Summer Olympics. The information card does not list all the items in the box but you can look them up online.

USA Salmon Snacks (5.5 oz) – Value $6

I accidentally took a picture of the back of the treat bag instead of the front. Oops. In fairness, the graphic design on the back is nicer than the fronts of some dog treat bags I’ve seen. Anyway, this is grain free and made in the USA, plus the salmon is sustainably-sourced.

Ruby’s Gold Medal (large) – Value $8

Nyx hasn’t had this one yet (I limit how often she gets new toys) but she will love it. The outside is nylon and she loves to chew nylon. Unfortunately for some leashes and harnesses she has had in the past. It does seem sturdy, though.

I-Vanna Not Fall-Ova (large) – Value $14

I think the smile on this toy is a bit creepy, but Nyx thought it was pretty awesome (many photos below). Two things I like about the design: (1) There is a spiky squeaky ball in the body instead of stuffing and (2) The legs slide back and forth, which made it harder for Nyx to rip them off. I feel like a fair amount of thought went into designing this. And it lasted much longer than usual for Nyx.

Gold Medal Dog Snacks (5.5 oz) – Value $6

And again I took a photo of the back of the treat bag. These are made from lamb, peas, flaxseed, and cheddar, so they should be good for dogs with grain sensitivities and allergies to things like chicken.  These are also made in the USA!

Etta Says Crunchy Deer Chew (7 inches) – Value $3

We always get one little extra treat or chew like this in the box. We had a long string of krunchie tubes so it is nice to get something different. I don’t think Nyx has tried deer so it should count as a novel protein for her and maybe it will not cause a flare-up of her IBD? I will introduce this to her cautiously.

And now for a whole bunch of pictures of Nyx with one of the toys from this month’s box. She had a lot of fun with this one!

Here is the toy after Nyx got done with it…

Verdict: I calculated a value of about $37 for this month’s BarkBox (large dog version).  That is a reasonable amount above the cost of the box plus shipping and the theme was fun and timely. The toys seemed sturdier than usual (we do get the “heavy chewer” option), which is also nice. And I had a good time watching Nyx play with the gymnast toy – she made so many derpy faces while pulling on its legs.

I have the medium size order and it was my first time receiving a barkbox, I was in love! The theme was an adorable “camping” style with a flashlight squeaker as well as a smores looking squeaker and “smores” doggie treats that smell amazing! My 30 lb pitty loves her Barkbox 🙂

I get the Large box. My very 9 mo. German Shepherd completely destroyed both of her toys in 15 minutes. We got the same weightlifter toy as you and an Olympic torch. I really need to call Barkbox and let them know.

Same here. My boxer jagger demolished that torch in 5 minutes.

Checked out this review the see if BarkBox stepped up a little more sense I canceled and subscribed to PetTreater instead. Nice review, but the box still seems very lacking for the money. After seeing this, I’m very pleased that I get PetTreater instead.

Oberon also got the medium box. He loves the toy that I put the ring treats on, and of course he loves the other treats and the pig ear. The other toy wasn’t a big hit but that’s okay. He isn’t a toy destroyer, so we have all the toys he’s ever had. One that he doesn’t love isn’t a big deal; he’s got plenty of others,

I’ve always been pleased with Barkbox, but even more so this month. Shaedi’s pig ear came absolutely covered in ants, and they had gotten into one of the treat bags. I emailed customer service to let them know they might want to talk to their provider. CS went way above and beyond with a credit to the barkshop and an additional month on my “pupscription”. I can’t wait to try the chicken rings with that bone!

Bark Box is an awesome company..They truly care about your pups.

My retriever blows through toys very quickly (minutes sometimes) and appendages are her favorite. I have seen some pretty flimsy looking toys in the past, so I have been reluctant to try Barkbox. Barkbox doesn’t allow you to do a mixed box, do they? I have a 17 and an 80 pound dog. That is one thing I loved about Petbox, before they went out of business, I could mix items for all of my pets in one box. All I would really need is to add an extra toy. I never let them have bully sticks anyway.

I get a bark box based on my 120 lb boy, but I also have a 40 lb boy and two 25 lb girls. They have a “heavy chewer” option if you let the support team know, where they make sure they give you the sturdiest toy options for that month (still not always super sturdy, but most months are). We get the large toys because of the big guy, but our little girls can always play too. They usually have flat or thin parts that are easier for smaller mouths. Last month, we got a pig similar to the weightlifter lady above.. my one girl drags it everywhere by the ears now.

My two girls loved this month’s box! The theme was darling and it’s as much fun for me as my pups. We receive the medium box.
Salmon Snax
Chicken Treat Rings
Pig Ear
Barbell Treat Ring holder ( Both dogs love this item and will play tug with each other)
Funky wrestler, with crinkle sound, squeaky ball and extra long arms/legs

Great box and super month!

I get the medium box. We got a rubber “barkbell” and a bouncy bone that you can add the treat rings to at each end. Annabelle did love the bone and the treats, the barkbell, not as much. Besides the treat rings, she also got salmon snacks. She hasn’t tried these yet, but since she loves salmon, I imagine they will be a big hit. She also got a pig ear. I thought it was a cute theme with the Olympics happening soon.

I’m getting the same box (I peaked) plus another toy from the “extra toy club” – looks interesting.
