It contains a breakdown of the items in the box.

There are also recipes that incorporate the items included.

YummyBazaar-June-2016-Mix

Korean Sweet Pancake Hotteok Mix by CJ (14.1 oz.)- $8.95

Filled sweet pancakes, called hotteok, are a popular street food in Korea, and this kit makes it easy to make them yourself at home. I was surprised to find that Korean pancakes are quite a bit different from the ones we make in the US! The dough is yeast-based, which produces pancakes with a chewier, more bread-like texture. I thought the kit was easy to use, and I really enjoyed the pancakes. I served my hotteok with a maple-Scotch dipping sauce, which was really delicious (though probably not at all authentic).

YummyBazaar-June-2016-Tin

Stir Fried Anchovy Myeolchi Bokkeum by Dongwon (1.76 oz.)- $4.95

A lot of subscription boxes try to steer clear of fishy Asian snacks, and I actually really appreciate that Yummy Bazaar just went for it with these tinned anchovies. For me, a big part of why I love international food boxes is that they provide me with the opportunity to try something new. (And this is definitely a food I’ve never tried before.) Honestly, I don’t think I’ll be regularly incorporating dried anchovies into my diet, but I had a lot of fun trying them.

YummyBazaar-June-2016-Marmalade

Korean Honey Citron Tea by Chorip Dong (10.58 oz.)- $5.95

When I first pulled this jar out of my Yummy Bazaar box, I thought that it was simply a kind of marmalade. When I started doing a bit of research, however, I discovered that it’s actually much more: this jelly is actually a concentrated beverage! Stirring a tablespoon of this Honey Citron Tea into hot or cold water will produce a cup of authentic Korean tea. How cool is that!?

YummyBazaar-June-2016-Kimchi

Traditional Kimchi by Wang Food (5.64 oz.)- $3.99

Kimchi is a popular Korean side dish that made from fermented cabbage. It’s the national dish of Korea, so I’m not at all surprised to see it included in this box! I really like adding kimchi to fried rice, and I’ve also been wanting to try out a recipe for kimchi grilled cheese sandwiches. I’m sure this will be eaten very soon!

YummyBazaar-June-2016-Almonds

Korean Honey Butter Whole Almonds by Haitai (1.23 oz.)- $3.95

These honey butter almonds are really tasty! They’re perfect for snacking, and I really like the artwork on the wrapper. (How cute are the almond bumble bees!)

YummyBazaar-June-2016-Seaweed

Roasted Seaweed in Spicy Gochujang Sauce by Woosung (.59 oz.)- $2.95

This snack consists of crispy seaweed sheets that are flavored with spicy gochujang. It’s vegan, dairy free, and made with no preservatives. I gave these a nibble, but they’re not really for me.

YummyBazaar-June-2016-Stew

Korean Herbs with Ginseng for Chicken Stew by Surasang (3.17 oz.)- $6.95

Yummy Bazaar often includes meal kits in their boxes, and I really like that this chicken stew herb kit contains everything you need (except the chicken) to make samgyetang. Samgyetang is a “summer vitalizing food in Korea” and is meant to replace energy that’s lost due to the summer heat.

YummyBazaar-June-2016-Gochujang

Authentic Korean Gochujang Medium Hot Pepper Paste by Haechandle (1.1 lbs)- $6.49

Gochujang is a popular Korean condiment that’s used in a number of popular dishes. I’ve been planning to try out a new recipe for bibimbap (which calls for gochujang), so this arrived with perfect timing!

YummyBazaar-June-2016-BBQ

Authentic Korean Bulgogi BBQ Sauce by Chorip Dong (1.1 lb)- $5.45

To make bulgogi, thin strips of beef are marinated in sauces like this one before they’re cooked on the grill. Bulgogi is another dish I’ve wanted to try making at home, so I’m excited to see this BBQ sauce in my box! I think grilled bulgogi might be a fun departure from barbecued steaks, chicken, and burgers my husband and I typically grill.

YummyBazaar-June-2016-Crackers

Chocolate Coated Crackers by Market O (3.39 oz.)- $5.95

These crackers are crunchy and only slightly sweet, which I really like.

YummyBazaar-June-2016-Chips

Honey Butter Corn Chips by Haitai (2.29 oz.)- $4.95

The last item in this month’s box is a bag of honey butter corn chips. Sweet and salty corn-flavored chips are really popular in Asia, and they’re one of those things I really wish America would adopt. I’m a big fan!

Verdict: As always, I really enjoyed this box from Yummy Bazaar's Destination Food Club. It’s one of my favorite subscriptions, and I’m always so impressed by the diverse selection of food they send. This month’s Korean box was a lot of fun, and I can’t wait to try making bulgogi (with the BBQ sauce) and bibimbap (with the gouchujang)! Even though I wasn’t crazy about every single item (*cough* anchovies *cough*), I really like that Yummy Bazaar sends some items that may be unfamiliar to American palates. One of my favorite things about this box is getting a snapshot of what a certain country’s cuisine is like, and I like receiving foods that challenge my taste buds a little bit. Altogether, the retail price of the items in this box totals just under $61. That’s an incredible value. I don’t know how they do it!

Have you tried Yummy Bazaar's Destination Food Club? What do you think of this month’s box?

I’m curious to know if any vegetarians have been successful in using these boxes. I love the idea of food subscription boxes, but I just don’t know that I’m creative enough to use all the items.

I am intrigued by the Hottoek pancakes–do they need to raise a while before you griddle them or use a quick raise method? Do you fill them or dip them? Great informative review, and a shout out to Lindsey for trying some of the less familiar items before deciding yay or nay… I appreciate your adventurous culinary spirit!

Hi nursermk!

There was no raise required for the hottoek. I dissolved the yeast in water, mixed in the dry ingredients, kneaded the dough for 5 minutes, and then it was ready for the griddle! The kit came with a separate packet of dry filling that went inside each roll and melted as the pancakes cooked. (The filling was sweet and tasted like it had nuts and brown sugar in it.)

Hope that helps!! 🙂

I really enjoyed the June box. I appreciate the research they must do to put together these boxes. I also love being able to order from their website and prices are really fair.

The monthly boxes say not available. Do they open on a certain date, because I would like to try them.

I’ve never gotten this box, but I have to praise them for authenticity. When I saw they were doing a Korean box, I feared the contents would be generic “Asian”, but they went for it, indeed! I’m impressed. Wish they would have included gochugaru as well. Such a simple ingredient, but we use it in, um, everything. 🙂

Ewww, I got dried anchovies in a cat subscription box. I could barely even stand to look at them. (The cats didn’t want them either, although I did give them one to try. Handled with forceps only…) But, I guess that is one reason why I stay away from Asian snack boxes! (It *is* interesting to see the sorts of things that get included, though.)
