Snakku-May-2016-Contents

I love the box itself and the beautiful furoshiki wrap! Your first box comes wrapped in traditional Japanese furoshiki. I received over 20 snacks!

Snakku-May-2016-Info

The info cards are gorgeous as well! This month they are featuring the city of Sendai and zunda-flavored snacks.

Snakku-May-2016-1

Shiogama

Shiogama is a sweet snack made by a Buddhist temple in Sendai (from the description it sounds like they're the only ones who make it?). They are handmade using a recipe passed down from the 1600s! Talk about a blast from the past. The taste is difficult to describe-- sweet, chewy, and crumbly outer shell with a smooth red bean filling.

Sendai Zunda Tart Cookie

Zunda is crushed edamame paste. I tasted more of a matcha flavor than edamame, but either way it's really delicious!

Cheese Kibun Senbei

Senbei are like crispy rice crackers. This one is cheddar cheese flavored. I really like how thin and crunchy these are!

Zarajiman

These are senbei covered in sugar crystals. I like the juxtaposition of the sugar crystals and the slightly salty rice crackers.

Snakku-May-2016-3

Zunda Chiffon Cake

The chiffon cake is one of my favorites from the box. The cake is spongey and moist while the custard filling adds to the creaminess of the whole thing.

Zunda Manju

This is a rice cake with zunda filling. The edamame flavor is most robust in this snack. I can taste the bean's grainy consistency but it compliments the powdery outer shell and slight sweetness well.

Matcha Azuki Cake

I'm in love with this snack. It is matcha sponge cake with sweet filling in the middle. The red bean flavor isn't very noticeable, it was more just sweet cream. I'm so glad Snakku included two of these so I can save my second one for when I'm especially hungry for Asian snacks.

Zunda Bamboo Dango

Dango is a Japanese sweet dumpling made from rice flour and tastes similar to mochi. The outer surface is powdered and the inside has a bit of sweet red bean filling. I think if you like mochi (as in real mochi, though, not mochi ice cream), you'd like this too.

Kani Crab Chips

Whoo! I've eaten a lot of shrimp crackers in my life but not really crab chips. These are airy and puffy and has a savory flavor. The taste is not heavily crab-like so don't let that deter you from trying it. I finished my bag in one sitting...

Snakku-May-2016-6

Ko-Ume Candy

Ume is plum in Japanese. These are sour candies. I was expecting the candy to taste like Warheads, but it was actually much worse! The sour coating is legitimately sour, almost bitter. After 30 seconds of making grotesque faces at my boyfriend, I finally tasted the sweet part and breathed a sigh of relief.

VerdictSnakku really is a unique Japanese snack box! I really loved trying the authentic, traditional Japanese goodies that I wouldn't be able to find in the States. That isn't to say I didn't like the more popular snacks, though-- those cheese senbei and crab chips are totally addicting! My two favorites are the zunda chiffon cake and matcha azuki cake (you can tell I'm a fan of spongey cakes). I also appreciate that they included a nice mix of sweet and salty/savory snacks. Plus, the gorgeous packaging adds to the overall presentation and allure. This is a great subscription for people who want to experience the lushness of Japan in their foods.

Snakku’s curation is one of the best in the food subs right now. I was planning to sub next month but I might treat myself to an early birthday present and sub now!

A per snack cost breakdown would be helpful.

Hey Jessvii~ I didn’t do a breakdown this time because it was hard give a point value to the fancier snacks. There were 22 items total, so about $1.77 per snack. Given that average, the crab chips would be valued more and the candies would obviously be valued at less than $1.77. Hope that helps a little.

That is some nice packaging for a snack box.

Right?? That and the cards make me wish for a Japanese art box.
