Pina Colada Cookies and Jam - Merchant Roots
This treat was crafted by Chefs Ryan Shelton and Madison Fraser for Orange Glad. My cookies came really smashed up, and the bag was open. I was a bit hesitant to eat something that came already opened, but I figured I would take one from the bottom and try it for you! The cookie itself smells like coconut and tastes like buttery shortbread. I mostly tasted the pineapple in the jam, I didn't really taste the rum at all. All in all, I really enjoyed this combination.
Lemon Meringue Bar by Glace Pastry Couture
This treat was created by Chef Madison Fraser for this box. It is described as "Fudgy lemon jelly sandwiches fluffy marshmallow nougat." They say that this is made with more fruit than sugar, but the second ingredient is sugar, so don't be expecting health food here. I did enjoy this but it is a bit odd. The texture is unlike anything I've tried before. The flavor though, is definitely lemon meringue!
Pates de Fruits by Cranberry Sweets & More - $3.95
These were really great. The flavors were strong, the texture was great, and they weren't overly sweet. They are most similar to the Sunkist Fruit Gems, but I think they're quite a bit better.
Donsuemor Petit Gateau L'Orange - $1.80
I have seen this brand at Costco and I think I've tried their madeleines. These were a little disappointing. The texture was a bit dry and the flavor fell a bit short. For a $25.00 treat box where I'm only getting 4 items, I would expect true artisanal bakery items - not something I can pick up at my local Costco.
Verdict: This is my first month getting OrangeGlad. The price just went up this month to $25 for four items; that works out to about $6.25 per item. I couldn't find the first two items online anywhere, so I can't give an accurate value judgement for the box. In general, I did like the items I received, so that is a win!
If I were pressed though, I would say this isn't really the best value you can get for your money. For $25 I could go to a local bakery and buy a few things that I can guarantee that I will like...not take a chance on something I might not be able to eat or enjoy. I'm not sure how I feel about this one yet!
