Monarch Fitness is a personalized fitness subscription box. You fill out a short profile questionnaire before sign-up that asks about your fitness goals, dietary needs and preferences, preferred types of apparel, etc. Then the Monarch Fitness team chooses products based on your answers. I don’t remember everything I picked (you can take the survey without entering credit card information if you want to see it), but I definitely remember that there were vegetarian and vegan options available. You can also opt to get a box every other month instead of every month.

This month, the workout plan came in a different format. I think I like this better, actually, than the old format. The print is bigger and easier to read in a hurry, and you can just fold the brochure to the day you need. Also I totally don’t have to go to the gym to use this (good, since I don’t have a membership to one) because I have this monstrosity in my basement, which includes a full set of pulleys and cables:

Nutrabio Pre in Raspberry Lemonade (20 servings) – Value $37.99

This brand is new to me (I may have received samples before but never a full size product). There are a lot of warnings on the package about not taking more than one scoop in 24 hours or not taking more than 5 scoops in a 7 day period. It also says not to use during cardiovascular exertion and it has a lot of stimulants in it. So I’m holding off on trying this for now as I am kind of in a cardio phase at the moment since it seems to be the easiest way to drop weight for me right now. I am saving this for when I get to my recomposition phase after I hit my goal weight, because I’ll be doing a lot more lifting then. (You can opt out of stimulant-containing supplements in the Monarch Fitness profile.)

Fuel Shaker Cup – Value $14.99

This has a little cartridge in it and a mechanism that lets you decide when to let your protein powder out of the cartridge. It’s hard to see in this cup because it’s black (if you go to the web link, there are some transparent ones you can look at). I don’t put protein powder in water because I never feel that it has the right texture, but I am going to try this with a BCAA supplement and see how I like that.

MP Combat 100% Whey in Chocolate Milk Flavor (1.16 oz) – Value $1.20

I’m a fan of this product in vanilla flavor so I am excited to see it in chocolate. And glad it’s only a sample because I have gotten full size (2 lb) containers of this in vanilla in two different subscription boxes since May. It blends into smoothies quite nicely.

Health Warrior Bar in Peanut Butter Cacao (1.76 oz) – Value $1.83

Health Warrior Bar in Dark Chocolate Coconut Sea Salt (1.76 oz) – Value  $1.83

These are making the rounds in a lot of boxes lately. I can’t decide which flavor I prefer, because I love chocolate and I am a fan of both peanut butter and coconut. These are a little gritty because they do have a lot of chia, and that is just what chia is like when it is in a drier product. These have 10 grams of protein and 5 grams of fiber, which is great, although they also have 11 grams of sugars, which is kind of high for my taste.

monarchfitness-june-2016-straps

Fitwear Lifting Straps (white) – Value $14.22

I have not tried lifting straps before so I am excited to have a pair. I am not super strong yet (heck, even an Olympic bar without weight plates on it is a challenge for me to do much with yet, but I guess that gives me room for improvement) but one great thing about fitness boxes is that I have learned about SO MANY different ways to get a good grip on weights, pull-up bars, kettlebells, etc. that I will surely find my perfect helper item one of these days.

BPI Sports Best BCAA in Grape (2 packets, 1 serving each) – Value $1.86

This is a favorite product of mine and I have not yet tried the grape flavor so I am happy to get these. I drink BCAA supplements while I work out (either cardio or weights). I really think they help me maintain muscle while eating at a calorie deficit, and also that they reduce the impact of delayed onset muscle soreness.

monarchfitness-june-2016-tank

Fitwear Tank – Value $22 (?)

I can’t find this exact item on the Fitwear site, so I guessed the price based on t-shirts made of the same material, since it uses just a little less fabric due to being sleeveless. This is fairly thin which is wonderful for summer since it is hot in my basement where I work out. This is a bit too revealing for me to post a photo of myself in it online for the world to see, but it will definitely get used.

Verdict: I calculated a value of about $96 for the June Monarch Fitness box.  That is above the cost of the subscription and I’m quite happy with the mix of items. The tank is just the right size, I’m excited to try out the lifting straps, I like getting little samples of various products, and the pre-workout supplement will come in handy when I start lifting a little more seriously (hopefully soon). Keep in mind, too, that this is customized based on a profile survey you fill out, so your items may end up being somewhat different.

I love lifting straps. Once I started using them my deadlift improved. They also prevent my hands from getting torn up which makes the exercises I do not need straps for less painful on my hands. This looks like a good box for female lifters.

Do you just have an entire closet full of the big tubs of protein and other powders?!
It seems like almost fitness box you get has a huge tub of something – which I guess is good bc of the value but I can’t even imagine where I’d have room to put all of them!

My sister is starting a personal training business in New York and she has three small children. If I end up with too much of a product like that, she is happy to take the extra off my hands because it saves her some grocery money.
