The information card this month let us know that June is “adopt a cat” month and a URL to find out more information about some of the products from the box.

meowbox-june-2016-lion

Ruff & Whiskerz Wildlife Buddiez Lion – Value $5.25

We get a lot of Ruff & Whiskerz toys in this subscription. The lion is one of the more popular ones. His legs are floppy and I think my cats also like the texture of his mane.

My “helper” strikes again…

meowbox-june-2016-toys

Sammy Merlin Handmade Ladybug – Value $8 (?)

This is a good size for a catnip toy, nice and small enough to toss around. This exact toy wasn’t in the SammyMerlin Etsy shop, so I’ve estimated the value based on some of the other catnip toys they offer.

Catstuff OH Fortune Cookie – Value $5.99

Sneaky liked this. She doesn’t want to admit she liked it, but I put it up against her for a photo and she kept it there for a long time.

meowbox-june-2016-anchovyjar

Anchovy Snaps (0.9 oz) – Value $2 (?)

Um, yuck. Dried anchovies. Although, these are supposed to appeal to cats rather than to me…

Anyway, you had to be a member of some distributor website to see the price for these so I just looked up dried anchovies on Amazon (marketed as human food) and estimated the price based on that.

meowbox-june-2016-anchovies

Seriously, this is probably the nastiest thing I’ve ever gotten in a subscription box (with the caveat that I’ve been a vegetarian for 23 years, primarily because pretty much all meat grosses me out). Sneaky was all excited when I opened this, but she didn’t actually eat any of the fish when I gave her one (handled it with a pair of forceps only).

meowbox-june-2016-wine

Pinot Meow Cat “Wine” (1.6 fl oz) – Value $4.95

Wine for cats. This has catnip extract and is red due to the inclusion of a little beet juice. My cats had an interesting reaction to this (see below).

Kitty picture time!

Investigating the kitty “wine.”

meowbox-june-2016-monkeywine

I knew Monkey would like this. I made catnip tea once and he had a similar reaction.

But, there was a reason I gave this to them away from any carpeted surfaces. Above, you see the results. That is one of the anchovies, there. I extracted it from the jar using forceps but the cats really weren’t interested. So I wiped up the “wine” with a paper towel…

So after I wiped up the “wine” mess, Monkey rolled all over the floor where it had been.

meowbox-june-2016-madison0

Madison wasn’t very happy about being brought downstairs for photos at first…

But then he found the spot on the floor where the “wine” had been, and he rolled around like he was high for a good 10 minutes.

meowbox-june-2016-sneaky

Here is Sneaky with the fortune cookie toy. She stayed like that for quite awhile.

And here is Mr. Kitty with the lion. And open eyes – in the middle of the day, even!

Verdict: I calculated a value of about $26.19 for the June Meowbox. That is somewhat below the cost of the subscription, although it is a better deal if you get a longer-term subscription or use a coupon code. It is about what I have come to expect from this box in terms of value, though I would still like to see another item to round things out a bit. I do like learning about new products like the cat “wine” and the toys from the Etsy suppliers. I do think finding independent makers of cat toys is one area in which Meowbox excels.

I love your cat pics!! They are too cute!!! I like that they end up in all your reviews, because when do kitties ever mind their own business!

I always check out your reviews, even though I have house rabbits. I can’t resist the kitty pictures. 🙂 Those anchovies are disgusting! I am a vegetarian, but still!

I made my partner give our cats the anchovies hahaha. Maya and Bogart LOVED them. They’re both obsessed. Bacon and Willy were not interested.

This was our first Meowbox though and they all LOVED it. Bacon opened all of the toys by himself, which was adorable. I’ll definitely be subscribing.

I am with you on the anchovies. They look disgusting. I would not be happy receiving them in a subscription box. The cat wine is interesting. It would make a fun hostess gift (along with human wine) for a cat person. That is a really beautiful shot of Sneaky with the fortune cookie.

The anchovies were a huge hit here and I tried one myself. Yep, those are definitely anchovies! Actually, this entire box was a home run with my kids despite the somewhat low value. I’d like to see Meowbox add just one more item per box, though, to up the value a bit.

what an interesting box… the cat wine was cute and interesting… but the anchovies, uh no thanks (I’m a vegetarian too). I might be able to deal with them if my cats absolutely loved them, but I’d prefer not to.

cute pics as always though
