This month Girls Can! Crate celebrates the life and work of Malala Yousafzai. We try to focus on the importance of education in our house so I was really excited to talk to my daughter about Malala.

This card shows what is included in the box and gives ideas to parents for continuing the learning with their child(ren) after the box activities are completed. I’m glad they added a section on encouraging children to be critical thinkers.

Malala is such an inspiration to all women but especially to young girls. She was so young when stood up for the right to education despite the threats to both her and her family’s safety. My daughter and I had some interesting conversations around Malala’s story and the importance of standing up for what you believe in.

The 20 page activity book included in each box is amazing! Girls Can! Crate contains three great activities plus this book which is full of tons of other things to do with your child. Girls Can! Crate is one of the best subscription values I’ve seen for kid’s activities!

This was fun! And messy!! My 6 year old got tired of putting the paper on the balloon pretty quickly but we had a great time talking about the places my husband and I have visited and places she would like to go.

This activity was a bust for us. I had a hard time getting the pipe cleaner name plate (Cira) to lie flat in the Borax solution so we only got crystals on the bottom half of the activity. I found the directions a bit confusing but now that I’m looking at them again, I understand better. Practice makes perfect, right? Either way, this was probably one of the most interesting activities to discuss with my daughter. We hadn’t talked about the meaning of her name before and she enjoyed learning about why we chose her name and what it means.

GirlsCan!Crate _21activity

This activity was the most age appropriate for my 6 year old’s participation. She enjoyed making the story blocks and since we already have a game like this, she knew how to play right away. You play the game by rolling the three blocks and then making a story with the three elements (people, places, and things) that are shown. There are lots of fun variations to the game and it’s great for all ages. Plus, I loved seeing what people (professions) she chose to go on the blocks.

Girls Can! Crate also included chalk and chalkboard for playing school. Cira loves to play school – or more likely, she loves to play the teacher- so we will get a lot of use out of this.

Verdict:  This is our second month receiving Girls Can! Crate and I think it’s one of the best subscriptions I’ve reviewed. Even though we didn’t enjoy Girls Can! Crate crafts this month as much as last month, I still think this is an exceptional subscription box and worth every penny you’d spend on it. There is so much to do and learn from this box!

Girls Can! Crate has a worthwhile mission along with incredible execution, value, and design. This box has a bit of everything I look for when spending money on activities for my child - fun, education, empowerment, interest, longevity, and quality. Plus, they donate 10% of the proceeds from each crate to organizations such as Girls Education and Mentoring Services (GEMS), Days for Girls, and SheHeroes. This one is a winner!

GIRLS CAN! CRATE

Hey all! Thanks Shawn for your review!
To answer some questions the box is designed for girls 4-8 but could skew a bit older depending on your child.

I’d be slightly careful with some of the ‘facts’. Australia is 1 country, australia. Makes us a bit unique as a continent.

However oceania/australasia is made up of 14 countries. They obviously need a fact checker.

Good eye, Olivia! It says earlier in the book that Australia as a continent is also including Oceania, but we can do a much better job clarifying and making it more accurate in the future print of this particular GIRLS CAN! Activity Book. Thanks for the feedback!

Is the target demographic for the sub younger kids or are there options for pre-teens? I’d love something like this for my 11 year old daughter but I’m afraid it skews a bit young in content. She’s subbed to ibebeautiful several times but this seems a bit more self esteem-focused than a box of cute albeit inspirational quote products.

I thought I saw 6-11 year olds somewhere but I can’t find it now. Someone last month asked for a pre-teen option too. Hopefully the creators of GirlsCan!Crate are reading these comments and see the interest for older girls too.

GIRLS CAN! CRATE

And we’re totally reading all of these awesome comments 🙂 Right now, we’re focusing on making this first version of GIRLS CAN! CRATE as awesome as possible, but we definitely have plans for a box for older kids in the future. We’ll be sure to let you know as soon as we get closer to that!

Wow, this is so cool! It makes me wish my niece was old enough for this box, (she’s 3), since I don’t have a daughter. If it’s still around when she’s older, I am definitely getting it for her. Kudos to the makers for putting out such an awesome box.
