The May box was for a frosted chocolate chip cookie cake.  I received an email saying that I needed to have butter, an egg, and greek yogurt on hand.  They shipped me the loaf pan you see above, a piping tip (large star), and a piping bag.

FS4

Here's the mix for the cake and the frosting, and the chocolate chips.

FS5

I mixed melted butter, an egg, and the cake mix together, and then added in the chocolate chips.  I greased my loaf pan that they sent, and threw it in the oven at 350 for 25 minutes.  FoodStirs recommended 25-27 minutes, but mine took at least ten minutes past that, if not more.  That's a bit unusual for my oven - I usually take things out either right on time or slightly early.

FS6

Don't you just love that Pinterest fail cake up there?  There's an explanation.  The vanilla frosting that they sent called for melted butter and greek yogurt.  I added the amounts called for, and my frosting was more the consistency of icing.  In addition to that, there wasn't nearly enough to frost my cake like the website, or the card showed.  On top of all of that, the frosting is definitely not even close to the best I've ever tasted.  The greek yogurt flavor definitely came through, and I just wasn't impressed with the flavor of it all together.  It is pretty disappointing, because the cake part is delicious!  But I guess it's good for my scale that I ruined the cake with the frosting - because I'm definitely not eating this.  I will say that my friend tried it and didn't think it was bad.  She said:  "You can tell it's not homemade, it tastes a little artificial."

Verdict:  I enjoyed the cake part of this, but I can't force myself to eat the frosting.  I should have listened to my gut and made my own frosting, but then I wouldn't have an accurate review for you all.  I hope you have better luck with yours this month if you subscribe to FoodStirs!  (I recommend using your favorite buttercream frosting recipe...sans greek yogurt.)

As far as value goes, you could make this cake at home for cheaper than purchasing this box.  Yes, I did get a piping tip, so there's that...I've been wanting a big star tip, so I will definitely use it.  I have mixed feelings about this box so far.  The pancakes I received last month were good, but not worth the price tag, and this month, the cake was good but the frosting was not, and it is also not worth the price tag.

Bekki first discovered subscription boxes in 2014 and they quickly took over her life! (Not quite, but pretty close.) She started with POPSUGAR Must Have, then moved to Little Lace Box, Birchbox, Hamptons Lane...the rest was history. Her favorite product find is Beekman 1802 Fudge (so, so good) and her favorite boxes are Birchbox and Hamptons Lane...but she's always looking for a new subscription to try!

I tried the Foodstirs brownie and it was not good. It involved the same # of steps as Ghiradelli, so not any easier. The texture was weird and grainy, with a lingering, unpleasant aftertaste. I wouldn’t buy it again.

What’s the difference between frosting and icing? I’ve always used the two words interchangeably.

I actually LOVE this sub! I have gotten it since the very first one. Why wouldn’t I just go to the store and buy it? Because I’m NOT a baker (nor do I like to cook…like at all…like my husband cooks, not me). This sub has really gotten me into the kitchen, helped me try some things I’d NEVER try (like making Christmas cookies! We had a blast making them “island style”). I love the that the ingredients are good and for me, who is just too lazy and inexperienced to want to look through the grocery store for the healthier choices this includes, I LOVE IT! They are really good, too. I use the cupcake mix every other week, at least. And I really like their icing, it’s really different tasting and good (in my opinion). Anyway, I like it, maybe I’m weird and sure, I don’t like to cook, but this has gotten me in the kitchen and that has made my family happy (and I’ve surprised myself!)! 🙂 Aloha!

I honestly don’t understand who this subscription would be good for. Housebound people who can’t get to the store to buy a cake mix? Pretty sure you can order multiple cake mixes from Amazon for the price. The piping tip is nice to have, but they’re generally not expensive or hard to find and don’t make any sense for icing that consistency.

It is meant to bake with your kids, to have an easy enough recipe for them to make. I get it for my little guys and they love it! It even comes addressed to them. 🙂

It doesn’t get much easier for kids than Betty Crocker.
