The June box was for patriotic frosted sugar cookies. I received an email saying that I needed to have butter, an egg, and greek yogurt on hand.

FS4

They shipped me the mixes for the cookies and frosting, along with sprinkles, sticks, and a star cookie cutter. As you'll see below, I didn't end up using the sticks. I forgot about them until the last second and by that point, my dough was already rolled out too thin and cut. I didn't want to overwork the dough by re-rolling and cutting, so we have cookies instead of cookie pops!

FS5

Here are my cookies as they're going into the oven! A few notes about the dough and the instructions from FoodStirs. They indicate that you should use cold, cubed butter to cream in your mixer prior to adding the egg. I did this against my better judgement. Trying to cream cold butter is asking for trouble. I would recommend (unless any of you are pastry chefs and indicate differently!) using softened butter at this stage. My cookies weren't worse for the wear, but it was a pain in the you know what to try to break up the cold butter to a state where it became homogenous with the egg white!

When you're rolling the cookies out, definitely make sure to flour your work surfaces. I used my silicone rolling pin and mat and still used quite a lot of flour to keep them from sticking. If you're having difficulty getting them up, use a dough scraper or a thin spatula to get them unstuck - it might tweak your shape a bit, but it works decently.

FS6

Here is my finished product. The frosting was the same as last month's but I thought it worked better with the cookies than the cake. I still wasn't a huge fan of the flavor, but everyone who ate the cookies raved about them!

Verdict: I think this box is great for those with kids just starting to learn how to bake, or for someone that doesn't want to choose a recipe without knowing how the quality will be. The quality of the mixes I've received has been pretty consistently good - with the only issue being the frosting last month not going well with the flavor of the cake. I like that they send the cookie cutters or molds that you'll need to make the recipe they send. With that said, the price is pretty high for what you're getting, so don't expect a huge value with this one!

Bekki first discovered subscription boxes in 2014 and they quickly took over her life! (Not quite, but pretty close.) She started with POPSUGAR Must Have, then moved to Little Lace Box, Birchbox, Hamptons Lane...the rest was history. Her favorite product find is Beekman 1802 Fudge (so, so good) and her favorite boxes are Birchbox and Hamptons Lane...but she's always looking for a new subscription to try!

I totally agree with you about the icing tasting ‘off’. I got the subscription for two months (I got $15 back via Swagbucks for doing a trial subscription). My two boxes were the Movie Night cupcakes (looked like buckets of buttered popcorn but tasted like vanilla cupcakes with Greek yogurt icing). Do not get me wrong – I love Greek yogurt – but it was super gross in the icing.

For my next box, the Chocolate Chip cake (3 thick chocolate chip cookies stacked to make a chocolate chip layer cake). This one looked like an Easy Bake Oven layered cake, but still cute. My mishap this time was using salted butter instead of unsalted (though they do not specify on the recipe card, I should know better) with the cookie mix, so it came out quite salty. I did not use Greek yogurt in the icing and just used two scant tablespoons of milk instead. The icing tasted MUCH better and the saltiness of the cookies were mitigated by it. Still, $20 for some cute cupcake liners or a plastic spatula and a $4 mix (at best)? I cancelled.

Bekki good review, honest and informative; I hope they read this and learn from your experience and suggestions!? But I agree with the others, the price should be in the $12. Range ( because they sent cookie cutters, etc.) but $20 bucks for a cookie mix? I would have expected two mixes at that price and 4-5 if I was buying at a store.

If I’m creaming butter, I definitely use slightly softened. Cold cubed is for cutting in.

I know this is harsh, but I get the feeling the target market for this sub is people with more money than sense. Not only is it, in my opinion, overpriced, but the recipes always seem to be a bit off or be overly fussy. (The pink pancake month comes to mind.)

Ouch! $20 for essentially frosted sugar cookie mix? That’s quite a bit high!

Also, yes, your butter shouldn’t be cold – it won’t cream when it’s cold!
