Birchbox has recently released some new collections. This one is their Frizz Fighters Kit. I live in Georgia and it is summer so it is humid. Frizz is my constant companion. (Note: This was released about a day before the changes to the points system. Full disclosure: I am no longer a Birchbox subscriber.)

My Subscription Addiction paid for this collection. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

There was a typical Birchbox information card included with this collection.

bbfrizz-june-2016-phyto

Phyto Huile Supreme (1 fl oz) – Value $11.76

This is a generous size and will last a long time. It has a nice sprayer on it, too, but I learned the hard way that I should spray oil into my hands instead of directly on my hair (got way too much, looked oily all day). It is nice as a finishing touch to smooth out dry hair before I leave the house in the morning and reminds me a bit of Nuxe Huile Prodigieuse.

Living Proof No Frizz Nourishing Styling Cream (1 fl oz) – Value $4.63

I think this was my favorite item from the box. I combed it through wet hair and let it air dry. The next morning, my hair was really soft and smooth. It is a decent detangler, as well. I would buy this in full size.

bbfrizz-june-2016-serum

Obliphica Professional Seaberry Serum (0.5 fl oz) – Value $8.64

This will last a long time, as well. I find that products like this serve me best if I apply a few pumps near my roots while my hair is still wet. It helps keep flyaways down on top of my head and keeps my hair from drying out.

Oribe Supershine Nourishing Cream (0.5 fl oz) – Value $4.90

I got this in my monthly Birchbox for June, as well. It does not work quite as well for me as the Living Proof product, but I’m going to change up how I use it a few different ways and see if I can improve things.

bbfrizz-june-2016-davines

Davines Love Smoothing Shampoo (2.5 fl oz) – Value $7.40

Davines Love Smoothing Conditioner (0.4 fl oz) – Value $1.18

While I do appreciate getting both the shampoo and conditioner to try, I really wish there had been a larger container of the conditioner. When it comes to fighting frizz, I find conditioner much more effective than shampoo. Also, because my hair is so long, this was only a one-use foil for me. This had a pleasant but somewhat powdery fragrance. I think I am more a fan of the Davines Oi Conditioner for my own hair issues, though.

Since I ordered more than $35 of products, I also added a Mystery Sample Pack to my cart. It had Harvey Prince Hello body cream (which I have received in mystery sample packs about 1,000 times already, but at least I like it more than the perfume of the same name) and Oribe Shampoo and Conditioner for Moisture and Control foils.

Verdict: This collection has a retail value of approximately $38.51, so about double the cost of the collection. I liked almost everything, though I wish there would’ve been a deluxe sample of the conditioner instead of just a foil (would’ve paid a couple extra bucks for it, honestly). I love the Living Proof cream, especially, and will be buying that in full size. As of the time I am writing this review, this collection is still available.

Wow! I missed that announcement & all that surrounded it. I wonder why I never got an email from BB. Even more baffling, how did I miss the posts from MSA? Now that I’m caught up.. I’m sad. BB was my “go-to” for so many things. I remember when I was going through the process with another company, on their Beta-Box I said over & over in my interview (Liz knows what I’m talking about..?) That BB wasn’t my favorite subscription because of the actual products I received, but for the CS & amazing points system. I literally said, “there’s no way I’d ever cancel it, because of the points.” It also has been an amazing resource for new releases, high-end makeup/hair products, restocking items, etc. The ease of getting around the website, as well as the awesome “suggestions” while doing searches have caused me to spend A LOT of money there! I recently had to go back on some orders on my Sephora account. It was then I realized why I remain a VIB & this was a real eye-opener: Ive been spending close to $8000 a year there.. Hold up! I SPEND A LOT MORE AT BB.. It’s always my first stop. Now, don’t vilify me yet, I do have a teenage daughter,(18 next mo) & we’ve spent a generous amount of money getting things, “just right for her.. ” I was raised on good for me, great brands, so I also wanted to have her do the same. She’s spent the last 1.5 years, figuring out her look & perfecting her wing! lol!

BB was my first makeup subscription. I’m really disappointed in the changes. I LOVE shopping on their website & had their NYC store on my bucket list, next time I visited. To me, it feels like the end of an era. Like, this is the last episode of “Sex & The City” or “Friends”. I know there’s other subscriptions out there to try & I have, (but quickly canceled). But, nothing out there like BB is/was. I feel deflated & duped. I felt like they were going out of their way to help me, so I wanted to SUPPORT them.. The new “Anti-Frizz” box kind of sealed the deal for me. I receive the exact same Oribe samples, by the handful from my local Cos Bar (packets & tubes). The Davines.. I stayed at a Lowes resort last week for 4 days & not only stashed all the daily samples (which were much bigger than the ones in the box) but skimmed off the cart, too!? The Obliphica: I bought 2 full size bottles with points/coupon/cash from BB awhile ago, because we fell in love after getting it in a BB. It’s very disappointing.. I remember looking for Obliphica & finding it at Ulta (with a coupon) but, decided to go with BB because of the reasons above.

I know BB has given a lot & they’re very generous but I feel like I am, too. Treat me well & I’m as loyal as can be. There’s a ton of other retailers, online stores, etc I could order from, where I could always get a 20%+ discount, but I always chose BB. It feels like they’ve turned on me. They weren’t happy or profiting enough with their old business model? Then, create a separate site for the full size, non-subscribing customers. But, to treat a loyal subscription holder like you just met me? SAD. Lastly, I know for a fact that they profit off several things, they’re not owning up to. They do get $$ & deep discounts on full size resale products, from companies they promote. They also get $$ from our reviews as the companies use them on their sites & overall across the internet to improve their ratings everywhere. So, this to me, is a greedy ploy because someone on the board or financiers within the company had a “Do you know how much more money we could be making off of these idiots, meeting!!”

Sorry for the novel, but I thought BB & I would forever be together. I guess all good things have to end..
xo?

Thank you for your posting your experience 🙂

I feel like I had a similar experience, spent a lot with loyalty at Sephora but then felt like when u hit the VIB the deals dried up, then started spending money at BB instead to go along with my sub and now they have these changes. Hopefully they’re able to pull ahead successfully with the same excellent customer service and member rewards.

They always seem to be stingy with the Davines conditioner. I’ve received the mini bottles of shampoo twice in my regular Birchbox (the minis retail for ~$10 at my salon) but never the conditioner. And the conditioner is the most important step for someone with frizzy hair!

Thanks for your review – I’m currently using Living Proof but the Oribe definitely caught my eye so it’s helpful to hear the comparison.

I kind of remember getting a larger Davines conditioner of some variety very early in my Birchbox subscription (maybe 2013?). It was in an odd rectangular tub.

I wanted this, but I also wanted to stick with Birchbox for another month so I can round up the points.
It will probably not be available for that long.
Ok, now I’m definitely split.

I decided paying $10 for another month to get $5 in points didn’t make sense, since I knew one of the samples would be mascara whether I wanted it or not, and my boxes always have a couple of products I hate (Harvey Prince, dry shampoo, texture spray, etc.). So, I just canceled and cashed out my points last week. (Of course I got an awesome mystery sample pack with the points cash-out — a Paula’s Choice retinol serum and a Dinoplatz highlighter — but it wasn’t enough to reel me back in.)

My problem is that I have 150 points. If I spend now, I “lose” 50 points. If I wait, I can use the whole sum of points (according to their changes). Since the curated box includes the living proof sample (the one I am more curious about to try), I will maybe stick around to get this, and spend 200 points next month before signing out.

Crystal

I didn’t buy this but I’m with you on just getting conditioner foil packets with the shampoos . I have long and thick hair too , it’s just not enough . They should at least supply two.

Great review but I’m done with Birchbox.

The Obliphica Seaberry Serum alone makes this box worth it! If I hadn’t just bought a full size (for $38ish), I’d have gotten this kit. A little of the serum goes a long way. I have oily hair and typically apply on the ends of my layered hair.

I am putting it on my roots and the container is like 20% gone already. So I have to do like 6 pumps to get enough for the coverage I want. Guess it depends on how you use it…

Do you know if you call a Obliphica and ask they will send you a free sample of the Seaberry oil in the same size that is in the birch box! I saw an ad in the back of the magazine once and I called and there was no questions they just took my address and mailed it out
