Birchbox has recently released some new collections. This one is their Acne Fix-It Kit. Even though I am 38, I still sometimes get breakouts, so I was interested in trying this out. (Note: This was released about a day before the changes to the points system. Full disclosure: I am no longer a Birchbox subscriber.)
The reason I am using a stock photo of the kit is because mine actually arrived in this box:
At first I thought they’d sent the wrong thing, but inside, the correct products were there. I am happy they got rid of the extra-large pillow packs, though. Those always came open in shipping. Moving on.
My Subscription Addiction paid for this collection. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

There was a typical Birchbox information card included with this collection.
Kiehl’s Since 1851 Rare Earth Deep Pore Daily Cleanser (1 fl oz) – Value $4.50
I also got this in my monthly Birchbox for June. It has Brazilian clay and is supposed to both foam and be gritty, plus it has diatomaceous earth for exfoliation. I do think it got my skin clean although I have not yet decided if this is something I would want to buy. At least there is enough to try, between my two samples, to make up my mind.
Balance Me Congested Skin Serum (0.2 fl oz) – Value $12
This tube is halfway empty (I do believe there are 0.2 fl oz) so it is difficult to dispense product. It has a lot of plant extracts, most of which I haven’t seen in anti-acne products before. It also has a strong fragrance that, while natural, reminds me of Noxzema. It absorbs into the skin well and is gentle, but it’s too soon to say how well it works.
Evologie Intensive Blemish Serum (0.33 fl oz) – Value $23.10
I love Evologie products and think they’re very effective. Plus, this is 2/3 of the full size of this product. I’ve been using it as a spot treatment and I think it’s effective so far. It has tea tree oil, salicylic acid (from willow bark), and azelaic acid, all of which are great to use on breakouts.
Juice Beauty SPF 30 Oil-Free Moisturizer (0.26 fl oz) – Value $3.64
This has, as usual, lots of juices and plant extracts plus added vitamins. I have such an oily skin problem in the summer that I love to use oil-free moisturizers. This has been working well under makeup for me, as well as at night. I’ve probably sampled this product half a dozen times in foil packets over the years.
Paula’s Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant (1 fl oz) – Value $7
This has salicylic acid (which is a beta-hydroxy acid, or BHA) and is a clear, thin liquid. I’ve been using it after my toner. Salicylic acid usually works pretty well for me. Just remember to use a good sunscreen in combination with this product.
Malin + Goetz Clarifying Clay Mask (0.5 fl oz) – Value $7.06
I am not so fond of this product. I do like clay masks, and I like exfoliation, but I am not so sure they work together. This has witch hazel, which is great for toning, as well as arnica for reducing inflammation. But, it also has pumice. Now, I am all for strong exfoliants, but I associate pumice with exfoliating really rough skin like my heels. I think it is a bit too harsh for my face.
Verdict: This collection has a retail value of approximately $57.30. That’s a pretty good value – almost three times the cost of the collection – especially since most of the products were wins for me.
