BarkBox is a subscription box for dogs. It’s the most popular dog subscription box. You’ve seen the small dog version, but since they customize based on dog size, we thought you might like to see what you’d get if you have a large dog, so this is a review of the “Big & Bold” box for a 50+ pound dog. (My dog, Nyx, is a Rottweiler who currently weighs about 84 pounds.)

My Subscription Addiction pays for this subscription. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

The theme this month was “The Great Outdoors.” The information card no longer lists all the items in the box but you can look them up online.

This Means S’More (large) – Value $12

This was surprisingly hard for Nyx to damage, but interesting enough to hold her attention, nonetheless. Of course it squeaks. I would not necessarily have known what it was supposed to be if not for the tag. But definitely a good fit for the theme!

Swiss Arrrfy Knife – Value  $14

This is a cute idea, though those pieces hanging off will get ripped off in half a second flat. When Nyx gets this toy later tonight (she had the other one last night), I may cut those off first.

Pupstream Snacks with Salmon and Apple (5.5 oz) – Value $8 (?)

These are sold out and the Bark Shop wouldn’t list a price. These have salmon and flax for omega 3 fatty acids, plus they’re grain free and also free of wheat, corn, and soy. They are shaped like standard dog biscuits and what’s cool is that the salmon is sustainably sourced.

Dogs Love Kale Apple Crisp Natural Wheat Free Dog Treats (7 oz) – Value $9

These are made in the USA and, while they do have rice and oats, they are free of wheat, corn, and soy. They also have flax, kale, and apples. If your dog has an allergy to a specific protein (say, chicken or pork), these would be a good choice since they are free of pretty much all the common dog allergens.

Zip n Skip Bowl – Value $25

This is a promotional item (has a pharmaceutical company logo on it). But, definitely useful for outdoors and travel. Nyx can only eat wet food, which probably wouldn’t go over well in this, so we’ll be passing it on.

Sawmill Creek Smokehouse Pig Ear Chew – Value $2.50

Well, it is nice not to get a krunchie tube (trachea) for the third month in a row! We usually get a little something like this (or a bully stick) to round out the value of the box.

Here’s a view of the bowl unzipped and open.

barkboxlarge-june-2016-nyx

Here’s Nyx with one of the toys from this month’s box. Yeah, she got slobber all over it. (Her nickname is “Goober” for good reason…)

Verdict: I calculated a value of about $70.50 for this month’s BarkBox (large dog version). That is considerably more than the cost of the subscription and one of the best BarkBox values I’ve seen. The promotional bowl was given a value of $25 (that’s what they sell it for in their shop) so that added quite a bit this month. I don’t mind marketing materials as long as they are useful, and I think the bowl certainly has the potential to be. The other items were all useful – low on allergens, the toys were fairly tough, etc.

I’m so glad I found these reviews! I signed my dogs up for barkbox last month, and I was happy with all but one toy (who thought to put a tiny stuffed taxi in a 50+ lb box?!), so I gave it to my nephew’s rat terrier/chihuahua mix. 😀

This month was much better. I had no idea there was a heavy chewer option! I really should switch to it, but my 40 lb jack russell/ridgeback mix loved destroying that bear and now cuddles with the carcass. lol! My other dog is a 90 lb husky mix, and I gave him the swiss army knife but he got bored. It gets chewed on once in awhile, but I think it’s gonna live a long and healthy life in the toy bucket.

My problem is figuring out how to use up all the treats before the next box shows up! I might have to share with my family’s dogs more. Not the worst thing ever, I guess.

I am Amy also. I stick some in the freezer for later and donate some to my local shelter. I just have one small dog and while she loves treats, she can’t eat that many. My daughter is planning on getting a rescue dog in the next month or 2, so I will finally have someone to share with.

We got the exact same things except for the bowl. I wonder if they just chose randomly who got one. Anyways, we’re loving the themes lately. August will mark our 3rd anniversary with BarkBox, and our dogs can’t wait for us to open the box every month.

I sub to the heavy chewer and I think the big box. We have two standard poodles. We got the smores and the swiss army knife toys and both were destroyed by the end of the night. I mean the fabric shredded and the squeakers no longer sqeaking! I emailed them pics about halfway through the destruction and got an email back a day later apologizing with an invite to choose another toy in the store as a replacement. Since the great balls of fire toy from a month (or two, I can’t remember) ago is still intact and still a favorite, I ordered another of those. Then the gross looking current one can go outside and stay there! He keeps sneaking it back inside when someone (otherwise known as my husband) isn’t looking! It truly has been his favorite toy so far.

We let them know about chicken, egg and wheat allergies and all but two treats have been keepers. We have been very satisfied and the dogs about tear the box open when it comes in the mail.

My box had the treat maze another commenter mentioned (but she is sadly not smart enough to figure it out or maybe she just doesn’t want to try that hard for food) and a squeaky carrot. I’m not sure how those things go with the camping theme…. This was my first month and I’m a little bummed after seeing so many cool themes and toys that go with them from all these reviews that I got a carrot! It was a medium box. We also got a few bags of treats and a trachea tube thing. The dog really liked that!

I can see why you are a bit disappointed because of the cool theme. My dog loved the treat maze when she got it a few months ago. I did have to show her how to do it because she just wanted to chew on it. Now she loves it and can get all the treats out. I think the carrot was from last months country fair theme. We didn’t get it but a few people said they did. They send out a survey every month for feed back on that months box. I always fill that out. Also they do have great customer service. My dog hated the trachea chew, I just donated it to the local animal shelter and they let me choose something else.

Chelsea, I’m sure you were disappointed with this being your first BarkBox. Did you receive a card that said your box was curated for camping? Consider writing an email to their CS, they have always been receptive and helpful.

We get the medium box. We didn’t get the bowl either. Would have been nice to have. This month we got the flashlight and s’mores for the toys. The treats were the same and we got a chew stick instead of the pig ear. I don’t think there has ever been a toy she didn’t like. She eats all the treats, but some are a bigger hit than others.

Just want to chime in, we did not get the bowl and was told that not everyone gets the bowl. All the other items are the same.

I love Bark Box! I have two medium sized dogs and receive the M box. The two girls surrounded me this week when it arrived, so I sat on the floor and opened for them to explore. This is our third box, and have loved each of them. We received a squeaky bear and a giant flashlight for their monthly camping toys. One of their treats were pork flavored s’mores and they smelled delicious. Lol. We subscribed for multiple months at the rate of $19 a month. Definitely a great value for us this month.

This month’s box was awesome. I get plenty of boxes for myself, but Barkbox is still one of my favorite. My dog gets beyond excited and it’s fun watching him. I get the heavy chewer, big and bold. The items this month were awesome. The s’more is surviving (though it got opened in the yard and is pretty disgusting at this point), the swiss army knife is fun, though now utensil-less. The promo bowl will definitely get used, and the treats are always welcome. This box also has some of the best CS out there. I’ve had quick responses in the past, and they actually listen to the monthly satisfaction survey. Last month was a bit of a miss on the heavy chewer aspect of the toys, and I rated them low because of it–they sent an email and offered me credit for replacement of my choosing from the shop. This is definitely one I plan on keeping.

Barkbox is my fav sub box every month. I think they go way above and beyond in catering to the theme. The packing paper and drawing inside the box just sent this month over the top for me. And, when I responded to one of their survey emails honestly that the treat maze wasn’t suited for my dog (who only likes treats of her best friend is there to fight over them) they volunteered to send me a replacement toy. I wouldn’t have thought to ask, since it’s not their fault my dog is strange! I’ll resub, no question every time! Yay Barkbox! (Shaedi is a 45# border collie/shepherd mix. We got a squeaky flashlight and adorable “giggle” bear. She loves them both, and the travel bowl is going to be perfect to stash in the trunk.

That’s good to hear. I just signed my daughter’s dog up for the yearly subscription. The June box looks great but my subscription will probably start with July. Hope that’s turns out to be a great one too.
