PupCrate is a subscription box for dogs.  They only send treats that are made in the USA.  Choose from a small dog box (0-20 pounds), a medium dog box (20-50 pounds), and a large dog box (50+ pounds).  This is a review of the large dog box.  My dog Nyx is a Rottweiler and right now she weighs about 84 pounds.

PupCrate kindly sent us this box for review purposes. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

Included was an information card with more information about the items in the box.

pupcrate-may-2016-bars

Snicky Snaks Cinnamon Crunch Bar (1.9 oz) – Value $2.49

These have recycled cardboard packaging and the company that makes them (they are from Etta Says! which you may be familiar with from other dog box reviews) strives to have a low carbon footprint.  Plus, these are organic and free of corn, wheat, and soy.  I noticed the description on Chewy.com says they have no added sugar, but brown rice syrup is listed in the ingredients list, and that is added sugar.  These have oats in them but the only animal protein is eggs, so these might also be suitable for dogs with allergies.

Buy a Bone in Peanut Butter (2.5 oz) – Value $2.49

This is from The Lazy Dog Cookie Co. and they donate 5% of sales from this product to animal welfare organizations.  These are made in the US and do have oats but are free of all animal proteins, so they may work for dogs with allergies.

Pet ‘n Shape All Natural Chicken Jerky Strips (6 medium strips) – Value $4.29

These are made and sourced in the US and free of wheat, corn, and soy.  They have a super simple ingredients list with no artificial flavors, colors, or preservatives.

Earth Rated Poop Bags (1 roll) – Value $0.71

I have gotten these in every Pup Crate I’ve received so far so I guess they are a standard inclusion.  I like that they’re biodegradable and of course they will get used.

Heggies Soldier – Value $8.57

This made an awesome grunting noise when Nyx chewed on it, and it was more durable than I expected it to be.  Still, it was a little smaller than I’d like for a toy for an adult Rottie.

JW Ruffians Cat – Value $9.29

Although JW Pet Company makes good toys, this was FAR too small to give to Nyx.  She would swallow it whole in a flash.  These toys are mainly what has led me to question whether I was sent the large dog box for review or not.

Here is Nyx enjoying the hedgehog toy.  She did eventually open up the nose but it was more durable than I would have expected.

Verdict: I calculated a value of $27.84 for the May PupCrate.   That is a little bit low for this subscription, but a lot of the prices quoted above are from Chewy.com sale prices, so MSRP is a bit higher.  I appreciate that the items – especially the food items – are currently in production and are not closeouts, and I liked that several of the items this month were from environmentally-focused companies.  The major thing I would change is to have larger toys as these – especially the rubber one – were really not suited to a dog Nyx’s size.

Those earthrated bags are really fantastic — they’re a good color, opaque, and very sturdy.

I dealt with Pupcrate 4 years ago and they had awful customer service -Jessica (customer service) was extremely condescending and rude. I’m surprised they are starting again so many years later. Back then, they focused on organic and eco toys and treats. I looked it up, same people involved. Definitely wouldn’t recommend this company. Barkbox does such a better box anyways.
