Play! By Sephora May 2016 - info 1

Sephora has such an excellent info card – it feels like reading a magazine! This month’s “theme” is focused on products with good, earthy, natural ingredients.

Play! By Sephora May 2016 - info 2

They have such thorough information on each product and brand! There’s also great tips on how to use each item and ways to get different looks with the lip products.

Play! By Sephora May 2016 - items 1

With the card, you get in store tutorials on how to use the products in the box, and 50 extra beauty insider points with any in-store purchase.

Play! By Sephora May 2016 - items 2

Briogeo Don’t Despair, Repair! – 1 oz, value: $9

I haven’t tried this hair mask yet, but I’m looking forward to it. I had a lot of hair loss post-partum and now that it’s growing back in, I’ve been wanting to get into hair masks– I’m curious to see how much healthier my hair will feel.

Atelier Cologne Orange Sanguine – sample

Each Play! Box will have a perfume sample in addition to the other 5 samples. I know I’m definitely not alone with not being thrilled with perfume samples… I never end up using them so for me they may as well be a sample card. I did learn a lot about fragrance while working at Sephora that made me have more of an appreciation for discovering them, though.

Play! By Sephora May 2016 - items 3

Origins Maskimizer Skin-Optimizing Mask Primer – sample

This sample is a little mini spray, like perfume sample-size. (pic below). This product is a sort of primer for masks. It’s supposed to optimize your skin’s condition to benefit the most from masks, as well as help them wash off better. I’m a little skeptical about this product, so I’ll definitely have to use it next time it’s mask night (I really want to think that masks straight on skin would work best), but I can tell you I like this as a facial mist, at the very least. (FYI – this isn’t recommended to use with a peel-off mask.)

KORRES Wild Rose + Vitamin C Advanced Brightening Sleeping Facial - .34 fl oz, value: $12.09

I have tried this product before, and I like it. The scent is a little strong but it’s a nice overnight treatment.

Play! By Sephora May 2016 - items 4

Origins Clear Improvement Active Charcoal Mask Sample

Origins Drink-Up Intensive Overnight Mask Sample

Both of these masks are pretty well-known ones from Origins (especially the charcoal mask). I love the charcoal mask but have yet to try the Drink Up mask. Both get great reviews, and I want to be sure to use the Maskimizer along with a mask of the same brand, since those masks are what it’s really made to work with.

Play! By Sephora May 2016 - items 5

Bite Beauty Amuse Bouche Lipstick Sample in Kimchi - .05 oz, value: $8.33

I adore BITE beauty! All they do is lip products and my favorite thing about them is that everything they make is made with food grade ingredients! Meaning all the butters, oils, and pigments in the lipstick that you’ll inevitably accidentally ingest is totally not going to be bad for you. This shade, Kimchi is described as a “shocking pink” and I would say that’s accurate. BITE always sends out hot pink lipstick samples, even with their last line of lipsticks.

(Also, I think this mini version of their full-size lipstick tube is adorable.)

Tarte Tarteist Lip Crayon - .001 oz, value: $1.80

This is a pretty tiny lip liner, but definitely still enough for a few good uses. The colors is a nice, rich neutral one that is flattering on a lot of skin tones. This formula went on really smoothly for me and has a matte finish. Bonus: I was still able to kiss my baby without leaving marks on him with this!

Play! By Sephora May 2016 - items 6

The top swatch here is the Bite Beauty Kimchi lipstick – the color payoff for this formula is awesome! Plus it’s very hydrating. The bottom swatch is the Tarte lip crayon. It’s a little soft of a formula, so apply with a light hand.

Play! By Sephora May 2016 - items 7

And here are the lip products on me! I know the Bite Beauty lipstick is quite bold for some people – try it, though! You may find that you love the shade once it’s on you, or at least see how you like the formula and check out shades that are more in your comfort zone.

Play! By Sephora May 2016 - items 8

When I was in New York to film with Elizabeth & Clarke for their new Unstainable clothing collection (and also checked out Birchbox Soho while I was there), I accidentally found Bite Beauty’s Bite Lip Lab! You can actually create and formulate your own lipstick! We couldn’t stop in because we didn’t have time and I knew I’d want to spend a lot of time there, but you have to schedule a time to come in and make your own lipstick, anyway.

If you’re in the area and get a chance to go to their Lip Lab, tell me all about it!

Verdict: I really enjoyed the May Play! by Sephora box! The packaging and presentation is fantastic and most of the samples are pretty good size! I used to work at Sephora so I’m a little extra giddy to get my Play! box. I love keeping up on new releases from my favorite brands.

Man, am I ever glad I have that Kimchi lipstick another try! When I got it, I put it on straight from the tube and promptly decided “Nope.” Then a few days ago, I started playing with the Urban Decay Vice lipstick app, and found that I really liked how I looked in sheer hot pink shades. I pulled the Kimchi back out (feeling thankful that I hadn’t thrown it away), applied it over some lip balm and got the exact sheer hot pink shade I wanted. Wearing it today! 🙂

(This is exactly what I want from these boxes: to try new things, and get out of my comfort zone a little!)

Haley, thanks for the tip about the Bite Lab!! My sister and I are so excited about this and we just made an appointment to go on 9/4 for my birthday 🙂 Can’t wait!!

Heads up! I just got an email that I’m off the wait list! San Diego for those wondering!

This was my first Sephora box, and I’m not as excited about it as I thought I’d be. I did end up loving the hair mask, and finding out it was $9 made me feel better, but doesn’t anyone else think the samples are smallish? It kinda seems like they’re all leftovers from the 3 free samples you get when buying something.

Reply ButtonReply

Sophia

I may be in the minority here, but I loved my box! I like experimenting with lip color, trying new hair and face masks, and in general trying new products from brands that I already know I like! I would much rather have this small sample of a high quality unique color than another full size red or nude lippy. Allure and similar boxes have a higher sale “value” but not for me if I’m not excited to use the stuff or plan on buying something similar after trying.

Reply ButtonReply

Donna

I think that I will cancel my subscription. With a few extra dollars, you can get the allure box which has more products. This box seems like it’s a bunch of deluxe samples. Also, the play pass defeats the purpose of subscribing to a box, because the entire convenience of online shopping is lost when the play pass requires you to go to a store in order to get its benefits.

Reply ButtonReply

Dianne

Just cancelled. Will resubscribe in a few months. I had to buy the Alice through the looking glass pallette.

Reply ButtonReply

Jenn

Has anyone is the Seattle area received their box? I am still kinda patiently waiting and wonder if it is UPS or something else. Thanks and have a great day! 🙂

Reply ButtonReply

TiffanyLC

I, too, was feeling kind of deflated after opening this very first box. I’m giving myself some time with it before I cancel, though. I looked back at the past reviews and noticed that this May box is the lowest value in quite a few months. I’m wondering if that’s because of larger scale roll out or just a blip. If it’s just a blip, I’ll be very sorry I cancelled. I’m going to give it some time, mostly because I learned a lesson from the Allure fiasco that people who come & go on a whim sometimes lose out big time. I wasn’t super excited about my first month with Allure in March but April was better and then May, of course, was awesome. Also, the Kimchi color is horrible on me when applied as a lipstick but when I used a brush (as was demonstrated in the video) over the tarte lipliner, it was really nice. It stayed on forever and wasn’t “scary Aunt Edna ” pink anymore. My son actually laughed belly laughs when I showed him it on before trying the brush!!!
Anyway, FOMOs got me staying with Play for at least one more month.

Does anyone know if you can redeem multiple play passes in store with a single purchase (for the bonus points)? If I make a point to take a trip to the store it would be awesome to kill several birds with it since the passes are good for several months.

Reply ButtonReply

TiffanyLC

You can but you will only get a total of 50 points per visit so it wouldn’t really work out well. I have plenty of Sephora’s near me but I’m not thrilled about adding another “errand” to my list. I guess I’ll try it once and see if it’s worth it to me.

Reply ButtonReply

Cassie

So even if you make separate purchases and use a Play Pass with each purchase, you will still only get 50 extra points total?

Mary K

I am amused by all the negative reviews and the quick cancellations of a box that was so highly anticipated and that some poor folks are still waitlisted for. It’s $10, you can’t expect big sizes. Look at the brands. I am thrilled to see Tarte, Bite, Origins, etc. Not a single BellaPierre, Starlooks or Doucce in sight. Sephora’s relationships with high-end brands is without parallel in the beauty box game; I’m excited to see what goodies they will deliver in the coming months.

Reply ButtonReply

Dom

I agree. I rather have small sizes of high quality brands than full sizes of BellaPierre and the like. But that’s just my personal preference.

Reply ButtonReply

Jackie

like you said is only 10 bucks, yes but in the sephora store they’re free, ipsy at least have one full size, no waste my money in tiny little samples.

Reply ButtonReply

Kaitlynn Marie

I haven’t really delved into my box yet, just got it yesterday. But I’m actually pretty happy with what we got to be honest. Great review 🙂

Reply ButtonReply

TiffanyLC

Hmmm…I’m still trying to process this! I get mine from the post office and open them and start trying stuff in the car. Do you come by your self control naturally or can I buy some somewhere?
I hope you don’t mind the teasing…it really did make me giggle to think that you are able to not tear through the box like a me 🙂
Have fun with your box when you do go through it!

Reply ButtonReply

Mary K

LOL! I’m not the OP, but I sometimes leave my beauty boxes unopened for several days. Trust me, I have NO self-control when it comes to certain things (like cookies), yet I can leave packages unopened for days w/o a problem. Also, I find the thrill is just not there if I’ve read spoilers, which truly do live up to their name and spoil 99% of the fun! Next month, no more spoilers for me. 😀

AmyM

My first Sephora box (finally!). I’m not completely blown away, but I am quite pleased. I feel like there’s more for me here than in my now-canceled Birchbox and Ipsy. Brands I know, like and trust, and at least two this month two things that I think would be considered 100 pt samples, so I don’t have to “spend” my hard-earned points on them. Plus, I love the very cute little fabric bag and the striped box. Yes, the box gets put into recycling but I’m big on packaging/presentation and feel it adds to the overall experience of any given box. Keep it up, Sephora!

Reply ButtonReply

K.B.

You get what you get. Sometimes you see the spoilers, sometimes you don’t. I do think that this box is below their standards for Sephora. I don’t like receiving samples that are marked “gratis-not for re-sale”. That’s rather cheesy. I do realize that they’ve changed to the inexpensive bag, but I did prefer the box-I had more use for that than this bag. They’ve also changed from the booklet to a fold-out sheet, and the PlayCard is now a piece of paper. So they’ve down-sized everything in the presentation. That presentation can make for a huge difference when you’re expecting something else.
As for this month’s products-The Bite lipstick ironically is the identical color that I received in my Target Box this month as the L’Oreal lipstick-a hot pink. And it’s not for everybody, that’s for sure. The Tarte pencil I received had been broken off and I couldn’t use it, so that point was moot. The Origins masks I’m looking forward to using as well as the Korres Sleeping Facial, I always enjoy skin products. The Briogeo hair product I’ve never tried and again, I’d like to try that one. I always love perfume samples, so that’s good. 4 out of 6 is good for me.
But somehow this box doesn’t seem to add up to a great value like other boxes do, although it’s final value apparently is around $35. This one seems more like samples that you get at Ulta when you make a purchase. I have to go with the disappointment factor on this one. And I guess part of it is the presentation of the box itself and the sample-type products inside. I’d rather have a product that I can get a few uses out of so I know whether or not I’m really going to like it.

Reply ButtonReply

Gabbi

I feel like many people are being *so* negative about this box…. For not very good reason, in my opinion. Did you guys not read past reviews, or information about the box before you signed up?!

It said they were switching to bags.
It said they included one perfume sample in every box – perfume is widely subjective, so if you don’t like this month’s sample… Wait until next month!
You DO get points back, like with Birchbox. It’s the Play! card that you take into the store for 50 points on your account – usually the exact same amount you get per Birchbox box.
This is a makeup box. If you don’t like aaalllllll kinds of makeup (i.e. throwing away all lip products), there’s a good chance you won’t like some, or a lot, of products in the box.
I don’t know what Super Sephora you’ve been going to, but I can’t get an entire tubes worth of a hair mask or a Korres mask or a half of a stick of a lip liner as a free “sample”.

Man, I’m sorry if this sounds harsh, but it gets kind of old to see everyone so pumped up about a box just to see it bashed when it comes out :/

Reply ButtonReply

Nikita

I agree a bit with what you said, but I disagree about the points. You have to make a purchase in order to get them unlike all of the other subscription boxes. It is not the same as birchbox which earns you half the price of the box in terms of actual value. Sephora’s points are per dollar so you’re ‘getting’ 50 dollars worth of points but you can’t even claim anything until 100 points and even then it’s stuff you might be able to get for free elsewhere.

That being said though my only bashing with Sephora is the utterly glusterduck that happened last month and this month in regards to people on the ‘waitlist.’

Reply ButtonReply

Elizabeth

I totally agree with you. This is my first box and while I won’t be able to use all of it (i.e. The pink lipstick doesn’t work with my skin tone), I am able to at least sample for the formula. I know people are expecting to get full size items, but when I had ipsy I never even used the entire full size items they sent bc I wasn’t totally into the formula. I’m ok with smaller samples of good products that have name recognition. Due to my job and kids, I don’t have time to go to the store all of the time and I appreciate being able to sample things in my home and go out and buy exactly what I know will work. I actually don’t even use a ton of products and the small samples last me long enough 🙂 I see how some people may be disappointed due to their own personal preferences and those people have the right to cancel. This will in turn hopefully give others who will benefit from this service to get off of the wait list.

Reply ButtonReply

Sara

Just plus oneing everything you said (including kids and job). This box works for me for the same reason. Haven’t tried everything from the origins stuff yet but the Korres sleep mask and perfume both made it on to my “maybe full size purchase” list. This box is a great fit for the phase of life that I’m currently in.

Chris

No way! I waited 6 months to be off the wait list and then this comes?!! I subscribe to IPSY & birchbox! Both 10$ and literally this was a bunch of tiny itsy bitsy little samples. IPsy BLOWS this out of the water! It was a waste of time and money! The disappointment was huge & I don’t care who tried to justify it! My FiRST and LAST sephora play box thank you!

Reply ButtonReply

AmyM

I don’t think those who are satisfied with the box (myself included) are trying to “justify” anything. It’s clear that different people have different needs and expectations when it comes to boxes. To me, a full-size of something from an unknown brand from IPSY is less valuable than a smaller size of something from a brand I know and trust from Sephora. That’s why it’s great to have so many players in the sub game — there’s something for everyone

Leslie

I agree about ipsy. I would rather sample products I could afford if I fell in love though. If I really liked a tiny sample and really wanted it but know I could never pay that much for full size I would just be sad. Maybe sephora just isn’t for me.

Ks

100% agree. I loved my box and was pretty surprised by the negative posts. I enjoy trying products out of my comfort zone and discovering new must-haves. Since I work, I can’t run to Sephora every month and sample makeup. Birchbox and Ipsy feature too many brands I don’t trust. With Play, I know I will get products that I’m not afraid of trying.

Perfume is considered a bonus in this box. We still got the 5 promises samples.

Reply ButtonReply

Tiffany

Totally agree! This will be my first Sephora Play box, and I’m thrilled! I can’t wait to see what else is in store for the future!

Reply ButtonReply

nelliebelle1197

And if Allure pulled off that Foreo, think of what Sephora will be able to pull off in the future!

Reply ButtonReply

mimi

I agree with this, and would add that this box is $10 — not $40, not $20, but $10. People seem to want 5 full-size products for $10, which to me seems absurd. I, for one, am really happy with this box. Will I like every product in every Sephora box? Probably not. Am I okay with that — yep!

Reply ButtonReply

Jenn

Agreed!!! I am beyond shocked too with negative reviews. I don’t receive Ipsy, but I’ve seen their products they send and I can buy them at Target or Walgreens. Sephora Play sends you HIGH ENDBRANDS. $1.83(w/tax price) per sample is amazing.

Maxine

This is my first box also. Signed up last year! I like everything in the bag. I’m 40ish and gonna rock that pink-on the weekends. I read on twitter about using concealer light and dark to change the color of your lipsticks. Going to try. I like scent samples also. Our family has lots of parties through out the year and we play bingo. Everyone pitches in on small $1 gifts so whatever is “not for me” gets tossed in the mix.

That is a great idea to donate to a women’s shelter.

Reply ButtonReply

Marcianna

The April Play box was my first and I wasn’t overly impressed. I was more excited about the May box but opened it to find the Korres sample missing. I called customer service & they offered to refund the total amount of my box. I actually chose to take 500 points instead bc I didn’t feel like the whole box should be free, I just wanted to let them know boxes are going out incomplete.

Later in the evening I finished exploring my Play! products & found my Tate lip pencil was very, very dry & kept breaking during use. Now I wish I had taken Sephora up on their refund offer.

Reply ButtonReply

L

500 points is actually $500, right? And yeah, now she can redeem that for 5 rewards of her choice. That’s awesome!

Reply ButtonReply

Mary K

500 pts = $50, still a great deal! ?

Mary K

500 points = $50, so you actually got five times the value of the box.

Reply ButtonReply

Marcianna

That’s true and with those points I can choose as many as five 100 point rewards online or in the store so while I’m a bit disappointed with the missing sample & the dry tarte liner I’m still winning. Normally I wouldn’t even complain about it bc mistakes happen but it was the day I’d had a dental procedure so I guess I was looking for some box therapy ? to get me through the pain. Lol

PJ

I wish the PLAY! PASS could be used for an online purchase benefit (discount, added points, etc.) rather than just “in store”. Many of us do not live near a Sephora location (hundreds of miles away for some), and since the PASS is a benefit of the box, it’s a benefit that can’t be used if there isn’t a Sephora near you. Wish they would rectify this in some manner…

Reply ButtonReply

Donna

I absolutely agree with you. Most of us do not live next to a store and/or do not have time to go to a store. That’s the entire point of the box, it’s a convenient way for us to sample their products without having to go to a store.

Reply ButtonReply

Christina

I’m on the fence with this box. I think its ok because the Origins was 3 things in 1, but I wasn’t super impressed. I kind of feel like Birchbox is a little better deal, since you get back credits and get to choose one of the items each month. I think I got drawn in with all the hype and not being able to just sign up when you wanted but I may try another month and see how that fares.

Reply ButtonReply

Laurie Hancock

I agree with you, this was my first month with the Sephora Play Box and I’m with you, I wasn’t thrilled with the box. I’ll try another month and if I’m still not thrilled by it, I think I’ll let this subscription go. You mention Birch Box, if you haven’t tried Ipsy before, I’ve been subscribe with them for about 6 months and have been pretty pleased with there boxes, something to consider.

Reply ButtonReply

Chloe

If you want a great box that gives you great bang for your buck try out BoxyCharm! It’s the best box I’ve tried yet!

BL

Its sad but me too. At this point I my favorite box is Allure. I also missed May because I cancelled to get Play but then signed right back up at the end of April. I had to keep reminding myself that its 9.99 plus free shipping. Maybe it was the small perfume and the foil like Origins sample. The lip stick sounds really cool but I would never ever wear that color. I am excited to see what next month is all about…..

Reply ButtonReply

Shalimar

I like fragrance samples. but I don’t enjoy receiving samples that are clearly marked “gratis not for re-sale”. They could at least keep those types out of the box. I think they make the box seem cheesy. And foil packets, too, especially when they’re so tiny. But we get what we get. It’s a surprise, sometimes.
It’s funny, the Bite Kimchi is identical to what I received in Target’s box this month as L’Oreal LeMatte in 100. It’s that same big, bold pink.
I used to love the little cardboard boxes, I could use those for storage, but these little chesecloth bags, ugh. Even the Sephora hard plastic cards have been cheapened down to flimsier cards. I’m disappointed with this box.
The Maskimizers I’ll try, shame they’re one-timers, Korres I like, Briogeo I haven’t tried and it’s a good size. The Tarte lip pencil that I received is broken at the end and unusable. Nothing is left. So much for that.
I hope they step up their game with next month’s box. Just seems like this box was a mish-mash of samples they wanted to get rid of.

Reply ButtonReply

Leslie

For anyone that has subscribed to this box for awhile:
This is my first sephora box and it seems like it used to be better. I was so looking forward to it and then read posts that because it opened up to so many new subscribers the value will go down. Well, I feel like I had a trick played on me. I don’t like the “bag”, the perfume smells like Christmas potpourri, I always throw away lip products (and there had to be two?!), found out I’m allergic to rose oil when I woke up in the middle of the night blotchy and face on fire. You can get samples this size for free.
I’ve read so many have already canceled. Should I cancel? Is this usually how they are? Any think it might get better?

Reply ButtonReply

Ks

Please don’t throw away products. Not only are you contributing to environmental waste, but women’s shelters will be more than happy to take the unwanted samples off of your hands.

A lot of women come to the shelters having to leave everything behind. Small beauty items help them feel beautiful and more normal.

Reply ButtonReply

Patty

Agreed some stuff isn’t eligible but lippies should be okay.

Janis

My first box, and it arrived today. I’m fine with the sample sizes and the packaging of the Tarte lipliner is adorable. I think I’ll keep everything, except maaaybe the Bite lipstick – it’s bolder than anything I’ve ever used! But there’s a first time for everything.

Has anyone gotten the product image scan to work with the Sephora app? I’m not sure if I’m scanning the right thing, the app doesn’t seem to be picking anything up..

Reply ButtonReply

Betty

The hair mask alone is worth the box. The lipstick would have been great except the color only works for a few women. No way would I wear it for everyday use. Its a color I would have worn when I was under 21 and that isn’t a good thing for my age now.

Reply ButtonReply

Erin

The Bite didn’t work on me straight up but looked really nice blotted down for a softer look.

Reply ButtonReply

Emily

Me, too! I was going to throw it in the swap pile when I opened the tube but I’m so glad I tried it. Pretty happy with this box overall.

Bella01

Just got my first box, so excited. I love the bright lipstick. Looks so pretty on me. Already receive so many compliments today. Hehe. I absolutely love the perfume. Going to have to buy the perfume. I love it! I’m one happy camper. Thank you Sephora

Reply ButtonReply

Emily

This was my first box and I’m using almost every single item, so I’m happy with it. I actually REALLY love the perfume, the Bite lipstick works with my skin tone, and I really like the Korres mask. The samples are pretty small but so far I’m more satisfied with what I got than I have been with birchbox.

Reply ButtonReply

Jen

While I’m not a perfume person and I hate getting samples of it, I ended up LOVING this one. First thing I did was dump it into a sample atomizer I had left over so that I could use it in that instead. Smells so fresh and orangey…

I think I’m kinda sold on Bite lipsticks, too. Normally with makeup, natural ingredients aren’t a huge deal, but when something’s going on my lips it’s nice to know that it’s edible.
