Pet Treater is a subscription box for dogs.  Select from small (up to 20 pounds), medium (21-50 pounds), and large (51+ pounds).  This review is for a large dog box.  My dog Nyx, a Rottweiler, is about 84 pounds right now.

This box was pretty full and it was ripped a little.  However, Pet Treater boxes always come inside an outer plastic sort of envelope so nothing fell out and it was protected from the weather.

My Subscription Addiction paid for this subscription. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

This box included a letter addressed to Nyx!

And there were some cards with information on an animal rescue organization being spotlighted this month as well as this month’s theme.

There was also a Hello Fresh gift card inside.

pettreater-april-2016-crab

Plush Puppies Jumbo Character Series Crab – Value $11.99

I knew this would make for some pretty good photos as soon as I saw it.  And I knew Nyx would love it.  I also suspected it wouldn’t last too long, and I was right.  One thing I will say about Pet Treater toys, though, is they are more size appropriate for an 84-pound dog than the toys in a lot of other dog boxes out there.  (Note: I could only find these for sale on eBay but the price seems reasonable.)

pettreater-april-2016-grooming

Wags & Wiggles Massaging Bath Mitt – Value $3

Nyx needs a bath and this could be helpful.  She’s had something rather like dandruff lately (side effect of her medication, most likely) and I think this might help get some of her skin flakes.  (Hope that’s not too gross.)  And thankfully it’s finally warm enough to bathe her outside!

Sentry Petrodex Dental Spray for Cats and Dogs (4 fl oz) – Value $5.99

Sometimes Nyx gets stinky breath (I think it is a side effect of her IBD medications) but this didn’t have any ingredients that raised red flags for her condition so we will see if it works (hard to tell from only one application).

Healthy Omega 3 Natural Bacon Flavored Dog Food Spray from Green Seal Products (2 fl oz) – Value $5.99

I am thinking Nyx needs some omega 3 supplementation as that will probably help her skin and coat.  I am going to check with my vet but this may work.  The company that makes this is in the same town where I live but I never heard of them before – it’s nice to discover a new local company.

pettreater-april-2016-kneeling

I (heart) Pet Head Cushioned Kneeler – Value $10.75

This is sold out everywhere I looked (except in the UK).  So I’ve listed a price for a company that used to sell it in the US and didn’t hide the price when it went out of stock.  I will probably give this to someone with a small dog since Nyx takes baths outside with the hose (and I don’t kneel on the concrete driveway…).  It is a nice idea but probably better suited to people who can bathe their dogs in the tub.  (Nyx can’t climb the stairs because she has bad knees so no tub for her – plus she is too big for that anyway.)

pettreater-april-2016-plaque

Wag More Bark Less Plaque from Cobble Creek – Value $12

This is somewhat less random and more appropriate than the usual “for your human” items in Pet Treater.  So that’s nice.

Pet Select Rough and Rugged Toy – Value $9.99

If I can convince Nyx that she needs to pull on the ball end and not the nylon strap, we’ll be in good shape…Although based on the Amazon review, this might not last us very long (Nyx only gets to destroy one toy per day and we’ve had a lot of dog boxes arrive lately, so we haven’t gotten to this one just yet).

pettreater-april-2016-treats

Himalayan Dog Chew Yaky Nugget (4 oz) – Value $4.49

This brand is a dog subscription box mainstay.  You can put these in the microwave and they are supposed to expand.  (They have milk in them so Nyx can’t have them.  One reviewer on Chewy.com suggested putting some of them in a Kong, microwaving it to make the treats big, letting the Kong cool, and then giving it to your dogs.  That sounds like a good idea!)

Pur Luv Mini Sizzlin Strips in Chicken and Sweet Potato (6 oz) – Value $4.13

This had a sticker labeling it as a bonus treat.  I think they are trying to clear out old stock as it expires in May of 2016…good I suppose if you are going to use it quickly.  And these do have some preservatives so they may have a longer shelf life than what’s printed on the bag.  I’m kind of bummed about getting nearly-expired treats from Pet Treater yet again, though.

pettreater-april-2016-nyx1

Nyx trying to pull the legs off the crab.

pettreater-april-2016-nyx2

Nyx when I tried to take the crab away.  I just love the look on her face.

Verdict: I calculated a value of $68.33 for the April Pet Treater Dog Subscription Box.  That’s pretty good for a $24.99 box, and I did basically like the mix of items.  I don’t mind getting discontinued or closeout toys, because the dog isn’t going to be consuming those.  I’m not so happy about getting old treats, though.  I really hope to see Pet Treater improve on this issue as time goes on.

I just got my box today that I signed up for back on April 8th and it’s for the May box… I received my shipping notice on the 27th, and it just said label created forever. It didn’t start moving until last week. Wasn’t happy with signing up for the box so early, but not getting it, I canceled it before I got it. I liked the box when I got it; but upon researching you can’t find some of the toys or treats online at all.

That’s because they’re generally all closeouts. That’s this company’s business model, pretty much. I think that is probably OK for toys (unless you want to buy more of the same thing) but it concerns me somewhat for treats.

Be careful, the same thing happened to me! I canceled mine before I had even received the 1st box too but just came to find yet another charge on my credit card!!

I signed up for this box, but still haven’t received it or a shipping notice yet.

I contacted them about it (My box was supposed to ship on the 27th) Apparently there has been a delay in the warehouse with the beds so they should be shipping this week.

I hope so, I just checked the tracking email and it’s still just saying “label created”. Getting very frustrated with them, already going to cancel whenever I get my first box.

Nyx’s face is priceless!! It’s like she’s saying “Please mom, don’t take my toy away”… Lol
