MY LEMON CRATE MAY 2016 - info 1

Every month’s box has a theme/idea that it’s curated around.

MY LEMON CRATE MAY 2016 - items 1

Here are the oils we’re working with this month.

MY LEMON CRATE MAY 2016 - items 2

The first project I did was the Cooling Aloe Spray.

MY LEMON CRATE MAY 2016 - items 3

I love this – I keep it in my fridge and spray it to refresh/moisturize during the day. It was pretty easy – just combining ingredients. I love that the bottle is glass, too.

MY LEMON CRATE MAY 2016 - items 4

Next was the coconut hair mask and lime infused salt!

MY LEMON CRATE MAY 2016 - items 5

I’ve never used lime-infused salt, but I don’t drink so I’ll have to try it with chicken soup or corn on the cob, like they recommend on the info card!

I haven’t used the hair mask yet, but I’m looking forward to it… I need one! It’s still melt-y liquid in this photo because I microwaved it a little to make the coconut oil stir-able. I’ve been recommended to use coconut oil as a hair mask, so the olive and essential oils can only make it even more effective than that.

MY LEMON CRATE MAY 2016 - items 6

Last, I made the sunscreen. I never knew you could DIY sunscreen!

MY LEMON CRATE MAY 2016 - items 7

For this project, you had to melt some things in a double-broiler.

MY LEMON CRATE MAY 2016 - items 8

All done! I think I waited a little longer than I should have to pour it into the container; it had thickened from being totally liquid so it was messy and difficult to get it in the tube. I can’t speak to how well it works, because I don’t personally care for the texture. It’s super thick and doesn’t absorb very well – I think it’s probably the beeswax? Maybe there’s too much; I’m not sure.

Verdict: This wasn’t my favorite My Lemon Crate, but I still enjoyed it and learned some things! I know the projects are pretty easy but I’m okay with that because I can’t commit to super hands-on or complicated projects right now as a new mom, but also the point of the box isn’t to be challenging; the point is to teach you new ways to use oils. And it did that!

As far as value goes, I personally think the value is there. I could get the little jars and containers and such for less than $29, but not also full sizes of all the other ingredients involved and definitely not also the essential oils I would need. And like I mentioned earlier, it is convenient to not have to buy full-size containers of ingredients like this that I wouldn’t really use except for just a couple projects.

This is the exact same thing, and I mean everything that I made in May 2016, cancelled. They repeat every year. I’m sorry but they should be more original than to repeat the whole exact same box every year each month. No originality.

My apologies! I read the recipe incorrectly and thought I need 1 oz of jojoba oil for the aloe spray. Thinking about it now, 1 oz of oil for “spray” is way too much! DOH! I appreciate My Lemon Crate for sending me another sample of the oil to replace the one that came in the box. Looking forward to making this as it has reached the 90s here in NYC! Aack!

Also, how were you able to make your Aloe cooling spray? I was getting ready to make this the other day when I discovered that there was nothing in my jojoba oil sample. I don’t think it leaked as there wasn’t any oil residue on the drawstring bag. I contacted the company and they kindly offered to send me another sample while also telling me that it was just a sample and wasn’t enough to make the spray! I was quite bummed about that!

We send the complete contents to make full-size recipes. Sometimes, the quantity for the components is only a few drops, so the vials appear to have little in them. The “sample” vials was just how I term the small glass container that holds the oils; Not that the product you are making is only a sample quantity. Sorry for the confusion.

I recently discovered that there are 11 ingredients that the FDA bans for use in cosmetic products in the US. The EU (European Union version of the FDA bans over 200 ingredients for use in their products! Something to think about when leaving all your faith in using something FDA approved. Everyone should do their own research on what they use on their own body and make their own judgements!

I’d love this box if anyone is interested in swapping. Please let me know. I’ll be following comments. Thanks!

Please don’t depend on the sunscreen for protection. Sunscreen is regulated by the FDA. Natural products can have sun protection properties, but they can’t legally make claims to this.

Actually the FDA doesn’t test sunscreen. It sets the expectations and allows companies to self test and self monitor. Consumer reports May 2016 has a story about how 43 % of the sunscreens they tested did not work as advertised even when tested at the recommended usage. No SPF sunscreen alone will do the job. So, let’s not give the FDA too much credit.

The FDA has a lot of problems, for sure. Why sunscreens are not regulated is bizarre- it is basically a medical product, not just a beauty product. However, it is a consumer safety, protection and regulation bureau, and absolutely necessary in an age of limited government regulation. Read a little Sinclair Lewis and thank heavens for the FDA.

EC

100% accurate. They’d do well to not make those claims in advertising on on packaging in the future or they risk scrutiny by the FDA. It happens more than people think. I’m glad that it does since the intent is to protect consumers. I’d hate to think I was using a wonderful, natural sunscreen on my kids only to learn after they were burned that the claims were complete bunk.

The disclaimer is clearly marked on the recipe. There is proven validity in the natural benefits and SPF factors of plant based products, oils, waxes, and butters we sent- and every recipe is thoroughly tested before being considered for the crate. But with everything, the consumer should do what feels right for them.
