This month the state is Michigan!  Discover Our America included a guide book of sorts for the Great Lake State, and included items that are all made in Michigan.

DOA3

Detroit Popcorn Company - Caramel Corn - $1.69

This caramel corn is really good.  It's made 'the old fashioned way,' but I don't think I would know the difference since I'm not a connoisseur - I just know it tastes great.  I love that Discover Our America found a few items from Detroit!

Martha's Fudge Sea Salt Taffy - $2.80

This is really good taffy.  For some reason, I've been getting a lot of taffy in boxes lately!  I used to eat taffy a lot as a kid, but it isn't something I buy as an adult, so it's nice to get it every now and again!  This taffy is chewy, and super flavorful - perfect.

DOA4

Faygo Rock and Rye Soda - $0.50

This is like a blast from the past.  I spent a summer in Edmonton with some friends when I was 16, and they had red cream soda - I never really found anything similar to it when I got home, but I always remembered it!  This is exactly like it!  It tastes a bit like cherry bubblegum and cream soda.  I wouldn't drink it every day, but it's a nice treat every now and again!

Detroit Bold Woodward Ave. Coffee - $6.99

This was quite good!  I made this cold brew style - the cheater way, in my french press.  I've been drinking it in the mornings with some almond milk and simple syrup and it's really good!  This is a lighter roast coffee, which I enjoy!

Cherry Republic Wild Cherry Tea - $4.31

This tea was delicious!  It is a black tea with cherry infusion and it was great with a bit of cream and sugar.  I always add cream to my black tea - it's just better!  This tea comes in a small container that seals that is perfect for traveling - I'm definitely going to reuse the container when I've used all the tea.

DOA5

Sanders Sea Salt Caramel Bar - $0.70

I've received these before in subscription boxes, and I always love them.  They're absolutely delicious.  Sea salt caramel with chocolate is my absolute favorite, so of course, I loved this.

Zingerman's What the Fudge? Bar - $6.00

This candy bar has a layer of milk chocolate fudge, muscovado caramel, and malted milk cream fondant.  To be absolutely honest, it was a bit too sweet for me, but I can tell it is made from high quality ingredients.  I think most milk chocolate fans would love this one!

Verdict:  I won't beat around the bush here: the value of this box is $22.99, which is well below the cost of the box.  I love the idea of this box, and I think they are off to a good start with the items curated for this month.  I hope they are able to raise the value in the coming months, since that is an important piece of getting new subscribers and the success of the box!

I think this box would be a lot of fun to get every month and learn about one of the 50 states with school aged children!  Each month you'll get a new state to learn about, with treats to sweeten the deal.

Bekki first discovered subscription boxes in 2014 and they quickly took over her life! (Not quite, but pretty close.) She started with POPSUGAR Must Have, then moved to Little Lace Box, Birchbox, Hamptons Lane...the rest was history. Her favorite product find is Beekman 1802 Fudge (so, so good) and her favorite boxes are Birchbox and Hamptons Lane...but she's always looking for a new subscription to try!

I was excited when I saw it was Michigan, but agree with the other post. These are not all Michigan known snacks. The popcorn is not made in Detroit it is from a compsny that does funraisers. Taffy from Mavkinac Island woukd have bee special, but Marthas is not know it only labels it for boxes like tnis. For this cost I will make my own with the brands listed in the other comment. There are many well known Michigan products!

This idea is awesome, but the execution is terrible. It feels like it’s missing two lifestyle items.

I grew up in Michigan and I kind of feel like this was missing a lot (not only due to the low value)! I agree with Faygo and Sander’s (but I think the hot fudge is more iconic), but Vernors, Bettermade chips, some actual dried cherries from Traverse City, McClure’s pickles/chips/or bloody Mary mix could have been included to get the value up to the cost of the box if it’s going to just be food. A Petosky stone (either as jewelry or a magnet or even a loose polished stone) would have been fitting as well as coasters from either Pewabic pottery or there are some made from recycled tires with a nod to the auto industry. Some motown music or a book on Great Lakes shipwrecks would round out the box more than just being food.

Sounds like your box would have been a MUST HAVE! I hope the curators see your post and take notes! I have a friend who is from Port Huron (? Spelling) and I was going to grab this box for her until after I saw the lack of value and included items. Hope they take suggestions and improve, this could be fun if done correctly.

Aside from the poor monetary value, I’m also kind of surprised that it’s all food. I guess I didn’t realize that it’s a snack box? I was assuming a few snacks and then other miscellaneous items from the state. It seems like an interesting sub, but it has some kinks to work out first.

I really hope they improve the value of this box. I was super excited when I saw the title and theme of the box. I really love the idea of this box, but a little more value and some non-food items would make it a complete win for me 🙂
