One side of the card reveals this month’s theme, “The City in Spring.” As an aside, Mask Maven comes up with some fun themes and does a pretty good job sticking to them. Although this month seemed mostly to be about fruit.
The other side of the card gives a little more information about the masks, including directions if they are unusual.
Also, this is April’s package. These ship in two batches based on your sign-up date and I happen to receive mine quite late in the month.
Banila Co. Radiant Lace Hydrogel Eye Patch (Illuminating and Lifting) – Value $6.90
This has green tea and niacinamide, both of which may help for brightening (plus the tea has antioxidants), rose (which can help with toning), and quite a few moisturizing ingredients (collagen, which will not be taken up by cells but which does retain moisture; carageenan which is gelatinous and therefore moisturizing, and hyaluronate, which is a polysaccharide that can absorb a lot of water). This is a gel mask that only covers the eye area and I found it cooling even when it had not been refrigerated, plus it didn’t slip off my face while it was on. It had a light, pleasant rose scent.
Dermal Acai Berry Collagen Essence Mask – Value $1.99
Collagen, aloe, and hyaluronate moisturize in this one. (Those are pretty common ingredients in sheet masks so you will hear about them a lot today…) This also has a ton of antioxidants from the acai berry. It has a mild fruit juice smell that doesn’t last too long. And it has the oddest shape details I’ve seen in a mask – there is a slit down the middle of the nose flap and the eye holes are only partially cut out.
Lovemore Loofah & Aloe Vera – Value $2.20
In addition to the standard collagen, aloe, and hyaluronate, this has trehalose (another good moisturizing compound) as well as sea water and something called loofah extract or towel gourd juice. Loofah extract has apparently been used in Asian beauty products for several centuries and is good at retaining moisture. As expected, this mask was quite moisturizing. It had a medium to high serum level and a fresh but slightly vegetal sort of scent.
Skinfood Jeju Tangerine Beauty in a Food Mask – Value $1.99
Skinfood Strawberry Beauty in a Food Mask – Value $1.99
These both have fruit extracts for antioxidants (blueberry and tangerine or strawberry and acai, respectively). They’ve also got hyaluronate and witch hazel (which is traditionally good for toning). These masks have slightly fruity fragrances that fade. They fit my face reasonably well (I have a small head, though) and have a medium-to-high level of serum. Because of the antioxidants and because they don’t promote oiliness in skin at all, I think these two are especially nice for summer.
Re:Cipe Slowganic Sheet Mask (Tangerine) – Value $1.99
Re:Cipe Slowganic Sheet Mask (Grape) – Value $1.99
These had niacinamide for brightening, lavender and cucumber, which I find to be particularly soothing, witch hazel for toning, and hyaluronate and hydrolyzed collagen for moisture. Plus mandarin or grape for antioxidants. Both were quite similar, with semi-strong artificial fragrances. They were a bit loose-fitting but didn’t slide off my face; I guess the level of serum was pretty good.
Yadah Vitalizing Mask Pack – Value $1.99
Yadah Brightening Mask Pack – Value $1.99
The vitalizing mask has an algae extract that acts as a thickener and emulsifier (Ascophyllum nodosum). It also has plant extracts that can be antibacterial (Epilobium angustifolium) or calming, and plenty of antioxidants including vitamins and pomegranate extract.
The brightening mask is a bit of an anomaly. It has the many of the same ingredients as the vitalizing mask and also completely different ingredients from what you usually find in sheet masks. Although this does have hyaluronate for moisture, the ingredients here are a bit different from those in other brightening masks. Finally, this includes purslane, which is purported to have anti-inflammatory properties.
Both of these fit my face well and neither caused irritation.. Neither had a strong scent (maybe a very light one upon opening the package, but it dissipates quickly).
Verdict: I calculated a value of about $23 for the April 2016 Beauteque Mask Maven. As with many K-beauty products, prices are all over the place. This is above the cost of a subscription if you pay month-to-month, though Beauteque runs promotions all the time. It is also a little better than last month in terms of value. I actually liked getting multiple masks from the same product lines so I could compare them, and I didn’t see as many brand repeats from past months.
