BarkBox is a subscription box for dogs.  It’s the most popular dog subscription box.  You’ve seen the small dog version, but since they customize based on dog size, we thought you might like to see what you’d get if you have a large dog, so this is a review of the “Big & Bold” box for a 50+ pound dog.  (My dog, Nyx, is a Rottweiler who currently weighs about 84 pounds.)

My Subscription Addiction pays for this subscription. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

The theme this month was “Country Fair.”  The information card no longer lists all the items in the box but you can look them up online.

barkboxlarge-may-2016-jerky

Nana’s Natural Jerky in Chicken and Sweet Potato (3.25 oz) – Value $8

This is a Barkbox exclusive and is made and sourced in the USA.  Sadly, Nyx can’t have chicken due to her inflammatory bowel disease so this will be passed along to a friend or relative with a dog.

barkboxlarge-may-2016-krunchie

6” Krunchie Tube from Butcher’s Block Bones – Value $3 (?)

These have been big hits with Nyx in the past.  But I think this is the 3rd Krunchie tube we’ve gotten from Barkbox this year.  (There isn’t a 6” trachea listed in the BarkBox shop so this is the value for the 8” tube.  Being a natural product, there will be some variation anyway.)

Craft Dog Treatery Grain Free Donut Bites (5.5 oz) – Value $8

These are grain free and made and sourced in the USA.  Plus, I think they definitely fit the theme quite well.  Every time I have been to a state fair or similar event, there are all sorts of junk foods to sample.  (Ever heard of deep fried butter?)

barkboxlarge-may-2016-toys

Bella the Prized Pig – Value $10

Nyx thought this was pretty awesome.  It didn’t squeak but had a sound like those toys with plastic bottles inside (though this is round).  I am surprised, but she didn’t remove the tail or ears.

Pupticipant Ribbon – Value $10

Nyx hasn’t had a chance to play with this one yet (we are sticking to the “ruin one toy per day” rule!).  I am not sure how she will destroy it but my bet is on putting a hole in the outer material.

barkboxlarge-may-2016-nyx1

Nyx goes after the pig toy.

barkboxlarge-may-2016-nyx2

Nyx was able to crush the pig toy and fit most of it into her mouth.  It was rather difficult to get away from her!

barkboxlarge-may-2016-toyafter

Here is the pig toy after I got it away from Nyx.  It was a little deflated looking.

barkboxlarge-may-2016-paper

Also, I just had to get a shot of the paper they used for packaging this month.  I think the little ants are a fun detail.

Verdict: I calculated a value of about $39 for this month’s BarkBox (large dog version).   That is $10 above the cost of a month-to-month subscription and even better if you buy a long-term subscription or use a coupon code.  I like that all the treats are made and sourced in the USA and that you can get some exclusive treats in your Barkbox.  And the pig toy was more durable than I expected!  So I’m pretty happy with Barkbox this month, (although I wish they would branch out and send us something other than Krunchie tubes occasionally).

Sadly my dog is getting so picky with his snacks that he usually won’t eat one of the selections in his Barkbox. This month it was the donut bites. 🙁

My bassets had a toy similiar to the blue ribbon but it was a pig. The material is actually pretty durable. If Nyx is anything like them the weak spots are the ribbon tails (on the pig they were legs) and the pig had ears, of course. They were able to remove each of the legs and the ears. We took scissors to cut of any straggles and the poor legless, earless pig head is still going.

Poor, poor, pig. Yet another victim of my dogs.

Meadow and Her Kitties

Nyx is so cute smashing her piggy! We got the large box for our girl Meadow, but we don’t have the heavy chewer option, so our toys were different – slobbery flowers, Gus the goldfish, and the scarecrow. The toys were adorable, but they are pretty “delicate.”

I have a young large Golden Retreiver Yellow Lab cross who is over 100 pounds, likes everyone and everything, can eat anything without problems and is a hella good chewer! Of the various dog boxes out there is this the best one for large dogs? He is a trained Retreiver so we avoid squeaky toys because they tend to mouth objects (to make the sound) instead of giving up things softly in your hand–is there a way to avoid them sending squeaky objects? Would appreciate any large dog owners who have tried other boxes to chime in.

We got the medium box, while we didn’t get a krunchie tube this month, I have had 3 so far this year. My dog doesn’t like them. Which I have let BB know. They told me that whenever I receive one to give it another dog and I can order a replacement.
This month we got:
Tempt’n Tenders Chicken & Sweet Potato Treats(value $10)
Gus the State Fair Goldfish(value $9)
Beef Jerky Stick(value $4)
Little Piggies Bacon Apple(value $6)
Orbee-Tuff Strawberry Dog Toy(value $14)
Annabelle loved everything this month. I find the items and value at mybarkbox. I also noticed that if you want to be nosy and not be surprised you can look this up before the box arrives. I did it once, and decided I like to be surprised better.

We got the large box and everything was the same except we got a 12 inch Etta Says Deer Chew. Glad I got it because the Etta Says are much easier to split between two dogs.
