Pet Treater is a subscription box for dogs. Select from small (up to 20 pounds), medium (21-50 pounds), and large (51+ pounds). This review is for a large dog box. My dog Nyx, a Rottweiler, is about 84 pounds right now.
My Subscription Addiction paid for this subscription. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)
Here’s a first look at the contents.

There was no information card in this box, but it did include a letter addressed to Nyx!
Pet Treater Bandana – Value $1 (?)
This is a promotional item. They seem to include one in every box. That would be great if they were big enough to tie around Nyx’s neck. (Rottweiler necks are thick.)
Happy Tails Tuff Lime Bone – Value $9.99
This is size appropriate and it seems durable. Nyx only gets to destroy one toy per day, though, and this was the 6th dog subscription box we received in a week, so she just hasn’t gotten to play with this yet.
Emmy’s Gourmet Canine Creations (2 cookies) – Value $2.50
I appreciate that Pet Treater is branching out and including items from some smaller producers. These actually seem curated and not bought as closeouts like a lot of the other items have in this box in the past, and I hope this trend continues as Pet Treater continues to develop.
Plush Puppies Hedgehog – Value $8.99
This was also size appropriate. Not particularly durable, but Nyx enjoyed it for a little while at least.
Pur Luv Healthy Support Large Doggydent Chicken Flavor (24 oz) – Value $9.59
This is a big bag. Nyx can’t have chicken so I’ll be passing this along. This bag had an expiration date of August of this year (not bad) and appears to be current packaging.
Banana Seal Medium (2 pack) – Value $9.97
Sorry for the eBay link but that is the only place I could find these for sale. I believe the company that makes them has folded. It is a nice idea, providing a way to reseal dog food bags, since many of them don’t come with zip tops. Unfortunately Nyx can only eat prescription canned food (which costs $3.50 a can and she eats 4 cans a day and I probably spend more money on her food than my own, but that is a different matter entirely) so I will pass these along to another dog owner.
Orange See-Through Travel Cup – Value $2 (?)
This is the sort of item companies can buy in bulk for cheap and have their logo printed on (in fact there was a card tucked inside it advertising just that). Then people at trade shows, etc., can pick them up for free. It’s one of the more practical “for your human” items I’ve seen from Pet Treater, though.
Wags and Wiggles Multipurpose Polish Wipes in Raspberry (50 count) – Value $4.94
This is the month for getting dog wipes. I can’t complain, though, because sometimes it is not convenient to give Nyx a bath (she’s too big for the tub and can’t climb the stairs to the tub at any rate) but she smells, so I can use these as a stopgap measure.
Nyx licking the hedgehog toy. Right before she pulled a bunch of stuffing out…
Verdict: I calculated a value of about $49 for the March Pet Treater Dog Subscription Box. That is a little lower than past months but I think there are two things going on: (1) the items that were closeouts are only available on eBay, from third party sellers on Amazon, etc., and there are pretty big price fluctuations there and (2) Pet Treater seems to be doing a better job at curation, for example, the Emmy’s dog cookies.
However, whenever new or unique items are included in a box, especially from a small producer, the subscription company has to put a little more money towards those items and the total overall value for the box goes down a bit. I do think Pet Treater is maturing as a subscription service and overall, I like the trend. (I don’t mind closeout toys so much, as they don’t have expiration dates, but treats are another matter, and I think they are getting better.)
What do you think of the March 2016 Pet Treater box? Do you subscribe to any dog or cat boxes?
