Included was an information card detailing the products in the box and some product literature for a few of the items. (Maybe it is immature of me but the brochure on the right makes me giggle every time.)
Mrs. Crimbles Macaroons (1 cookie) – Value $0.67
These are gluten-free and are listed on the card as being for “cheat day.” They are not particularly good for you (which is probably why they taste good), with 34 grams of sugars per serving. I don’t do cheat days but instead work occasional treats into my daily calorie goals.
The Hand Stuff (3 g) – Value $0.63
This is a bit waxy but warms up as you start to apply it. It seems like more of a winter item from my perspective. It contains lanolin so is not vegan. (In general, Bulu Box is probably not a good match for vegans.)
Vanapain One Shot Pain Reliever (1.93 oz) – Value $3.20
I haven’t been able to try this yet because I haven’t had any pain that needed relieving. This has caffeine which is supposed to make pain relief more effective. The active ingredient is choline salicylate so don’t take if you are sensitive to aspirin.
Udo’s Choice Enzyme Blend (3 capsules) – Value $1.10
Think of this as a vegetarian version of Beano (since the classic formulation of Beano contains gelatin). This contains a bunch of different digestive enzymes mostly from fungal cultures. It’s hard to tell from only three pills whether a supplement works but, at the least, you will be able to see whether it causes a reaction or not. I seemed to tolerate it pretty well and it is less expensive than some competing products.
Fru-Licious Freeze-Dried Banana and Strawberry (0.35 oz) – Value $1
This is a good value for freeze-dried fruit. I find it to be particularly good in oatmeal. If you let a bit of hot water soak in, it rehydrates the fruit. Plus, it has a much longer shelf life than fresh strawberries and bananas!
Cal-Ez Calcium + Vitamin D (2 packets) – Value $0.86
This is a nice alternative to bulky calcium pills. I tried it by mixing it into a smoothie where it really wasn’t noticeable. (It is vegetarian. It is also gluten free if that is of concern to you.) I am very small-boned and in an osteoporosis risk group (at some point in the future, anyway) and I have had to cut back on dairy lately because of calories, plus I never go out in the sun, so a calcium + D supplement is something I have been thinking about.
Verdict: I calculated a value of about $7.46 for the April Bulu Box. Although that is below the base price of the subscription, there are a couple of things to keep in mind. First, if you use theMYSUB5 coupon you can get the box for half off, which means you come out a little ahead. Second, you get a dollar in “Bulu Bucks” for every sample you review on their site, and these can be redeemed in their shop. So if you would normally buy items from their shop and you use a coupon, the box basically pays for itself.
I was very happy that every item this month was vegetarian (they don’t promise to cater to specific dietary needs). I liked the variety of products and all the brands were new to me. You should expect to get a lot of sample-sized and single-use items with this subscription. If you are interested in trying new supplements or you regularly buy protein powders, energy bars, etc. (their shop has Quest Bars!), this could be a good way for you to learn about new products.
