maskmaven-march-2016-card1

maskmaven-march-2016-card2

One side of the card reveals this month’s theme, “Good Energy Garden.”  As an aside, Mask Maven comes up with some fun themes and does a pretty good job sticking to them.

The other side of the card gives a little more information about the masks, including directions if they are unusual.

Also, this is March’s package.  These ship in two batches based on your sign-up date and I happen to receive mine quite late in the month.

maskmaven-march-2016-charcoal

Dermal Charcoal Collagen Essence Mask – Value $0.68

This mask has collagen for moisturizing (collagen is a big protein molecule that holds on to a lot of water).  The “firmness” often associated with collagen in skincare is most likely just a result of the moisture (which was nice here) since the molecule is really too big to be taken up by the skin.  And the charcoal helped cleanse my pores.  Not as much as a non-sheet charcoal mask, but nice as an added benefit.

Mizon Enjoy Vital-Up Time Nourishing Mask with Avocado - $2.25

This brand shows up in Mask Maven from time to time.  This mask is very moisturizing as well, thanks to the trehalose and hyaluronate in addition to the avocado oil (which is fairly low on the ingredients list so the mask isn’t really oily).

maskmaven-march-2016-ginseng

Botanic Farm Ginseng Mask – Value $2.20

This is full of antioxidants from plant extracts.  I do like using skincare items with antioxidants as some additional protection against free radical damage (though don’t forget to use a good SPF product as well).  Ginseng and adenosine are supposed to be “nutrients” in this although after six years of biochemistry grad school working with nucleic acids, I don’t get why applying adenosine to your face would do anything (it’s one component of DNA or RNA depending on the sugar attached).  Nonetheless, it’s there.

This is supposed to help fight wrinkles and tone the skin as well as treat dark circles.  I do think it was good at toning and moisturizing though I don’t get dark circles so I can’t speak to that.

Missha Pure Source Cell Sheet Mask (Lotus Flower) – Value $1.99

I’ve been seeing a lot of Missha in K-beauty subscriptions lately, but that’s fine because I like them.  I’ve seen lotus listed as having brightening effects elsewhere although after only one use, it was difficult to say whether or not that happened here.  This is also supposed to be moisturizing and it definitely was.

maskmaven-march-2016-lips

Botanic Farm Tea Tree Mask – Value $2.20

Tea tree oil calms the skin and is good against breakouts (I use it in several other skincare products as well) so I was happy to see that here.  There are also a lot of antioxidants from plant extracts in this mask.  This is a mask I’d consider buying a lot of and using regularly for these benefits – they’re just what my skin needs!

My Beauty Diary Rose Moisturizing Essence Mask – Value $1.99

This has rose extract and witch hazel so it is good at moisturizing but it will also tone the skin.  The toning effects are probably going to be more obvious in someone with dry skin; mine has been quite oily lately.

The Face Shop Cherry Cherry Lips Modeling Gel Patch – Value $2.81

This has cranberry extract (which has antioxidants) and provides moisture for the lips (and really the whole mouth area because this thing is MUCH larger than my actual lips).  I could use more of these because I have been trying a lot of drying lip colors lately and my lips need all the moisture they can get.

maskmaven-march-2016-packs

Prelab Skin Energy Mask Wrinkle Energy – Value $2.99

At first I thought these were modeling packs or something since they are not the traditional foil envelopes sheet masks come in.  But they’re sheet masks!  This one is supposed to be for firmness.  It has hydrolyzed collagen (see note about collagen above) as well as some proprietary peptides (may be small enough for absorption, it’s hard to say) so it is definitely moisturizing.  It’s another one you’d need to use for a few days or weeks to see results, I think.

Prelab Skin Energy Mask Aqua Energy – Value $2.99

This mask is supposed to be good for dry, rough skin with ingredients like glycerin, sodium hyaluronate, and trehalose.  It also contains sea water.  I have pretty much the opposite of dry, rough skin, so I wasn’t expecting much when I used this.  I did think it was moisturizing but probably also that it’s better suited for winter use (at least for me).

Verdict:  I calculated a value of $20.09 for the March 2016 Beauteque Mask Maven.  As with many K-beauty products, prices are all over the place.   This is slightly above the cost of a subscription if you pay month-to-month, though Beauteque runs promotions all the time.  I liked the variety of featured ingredients this month; there wasn’t a whole lot of overlap.  And although there were some brands I’d seen before, there were also a few that were new to me.

I so wish there was a mask subscription, Korean or not, that featured masks that were not single use sheet masks. Even if there were sample sized, I usually can get many uses out of a sample. I love masks, but like to alternate 3 different masks each week, but the same three all month. I believe cumulative use brings better results. But I do love your scientific reviews. There is a lot of b.s. beauty claims out there and you can tell us the truth behind whether these ingredients will actually do anything or not. Thanks for another great review, Ragan.

Those Prelab ones look interesting! Kinda like a plastic ketchup packet 😀

LOL, they really do although they are much bigger than the ketchup things. I found those to be extra goopy…lots and lots of “essence” in them and the sheet. Made it a bit weird, but not too bad.

Great review Ragan! March was my first month and I thoroughly enjoyed trying all the different masks. I didn’t notice a huge difference with any of them, though.

I love the packaging on Korean beauty items. I’ve had great luck with a lot of the products, but the packaging is often half the fun.
