BarkBox is a subscription box for dogs.  It’s the most popular dog subscription box.  You’ve seen the small dog version, but since they customize based on dog size, we thought you might like to see what you’d get if you have a large dog, so this is a review of the “Big & Bold” box for a 50+ pound dog.  (My dog, Nyx, is a Rottweiler who currently weighs about 84 pounds.)

My Subscription Addiction pays for this subscription. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

The Subscription Box: BarkBox

Good to Know: BarkBox offers a heavy chewer option.  After you sign up, you can email them to request this.  This box is supposedly the heavy chewer option.

The theme this month was “Take Me Out to the Ball Game.”  (Baseball is a sore spot with me right now.  They are building a new stadium for the Atlanta Braves within walking distance of my office.  My commute is going to be terrible next year.)  The information card no longer lists all the items in the box but you can look them up online.

The other side of the card, you can punch out and take a picture of your dog through the hole.  Only, I don’t even think the hole is big enough for Nyx’s snout…

Bark & Co “The Fire Baller” – Value $12

This is a Barkbox exclusive and the ball part is a great size for larger dogs.  Nyx can fit it in her mouth but it’s too big for her to swallow.

Bark & Co “The Yogi Barka Mitt” – Value $16

We got the “stuffing free” version which is great since Nyx likes to destroy toys and pull the stuffing out.  She hasn’t had this yet because she only gets to destroy one toy every day or two.  But I know she will be thrilled.

barkboxlarge-april-2016-treats

House of Pups Triple Cheese Baseball Treats (5.5 oz) – Value $8

These are grain-free and made in the USA.  They’re a little soft, like they would be chewy, and they are also free of meat products, so they should be good for dogs with allergies.

Thinkers Duck Stick – Value $3

These are also made in the US and the first two ingredients are duck and brown rice.  Duck is a good protein to try if your dog can’t handle chicken.  (Unfortunately, Nyx’s luck with duck ran out a year ago.  But it is good for many dogs.)

Bixbi Pocket Trainers in Chicken (6 oz) – Value $8

These are grain free and made in the US.  They have chia, cranberries, and blueberries for antioxidants.  The blueberries and cranberries should also be helpful for dogs with a tendency to get urinary tract infections.

Nyx with the baseball toy.  She quickly decided the flames were more interesting than the ball.

I had to take this away when Nyx started eating the flames…

Verdict: I calculated a value of about $47 for this month’s BarkBox (large dog version).   That is about average for BarkBox and is considerably above the price of the subscription (and is an even better deal for longer-term subscriptions or if you can get a coupon deal).  The treats all appeared to be high quality and everything fit the theme very well.  Plus, you just can’t get these toys anywhere else.  And I’m happy for the stuffing-free glove toy.  This was a pretty good month from BarkBox for us.

We get the medium box, I got the baseball cap and a foam finger. Annabelle started chewing on it and decided with the foam it was not a good toy for her to chew on. Since chewing it up, seemed to be the only thing she was interested in doing with it, I took it away from her. She loved the cheese flavored treats. We also got the trachea tube. It is the 3rd one they sent us and I have told them that my dog doesn’t like it and not to send anymore. They did let me choose something else out the second time and to donate the unwanted item, but then they sent the same thing out again for this month.

Am I the only one whose dog is not excited by this box? The Notorious D.O.G. just is not a fan of the treats. My other dog likes the treats but not the toys. I have the most fickle dogs in the world.

I decided to cancel this box. When I went online to do so BarkBox offered to take $10 off the price of the box for 6 months. Looks like Notorious D.O.G. will be getting more bark boxes for now.

My Natalie got a mitt, a burger, and (extra toy club) baseball bat toy, and she got those training treats last month. My dog is pretty easy-going and a little older, but she’s part lab and loves to chew. I love putting the healthy treats in Kong toys for her. And she tears up toys, but unless they’re really fragile she’ll take her time. So I think this was a good box for her. She’s also a large doggo (tho I don’t think I requested the heavy chewer option).

I received the exact same box for my Bella. As soon as I saw the baseball, I immediately said the flames will be the first to go. I think the mit might take her a little longer to destroy, but I thought the same of the Mammoth Braided Rope toy we got her on Sunday. Within an hour of getting the toy, she had already unraveled the ring, so the toy was just a long rope. We ended up with red threads all over the floor before we were able to take it away from her.

I also get the medium box for Oberon, our Sheltie. We got a baseball cap toy, a peanut shell with two removable nuts, a pretzel-shaped jerkey, a package of jerkey treats, and a package of buffalo treats. Oberon really likes that there’s more treats than toys, but loves all of it. He can always tell when the package is for him instead of for me, and sits and waits patiently (at least sort of patiently) for me to open it.

I actually got a really amazing box. A rubber baseball, a hat, and large crinkly peanut (with 2 removable nuts that squeak). 2 large baseball bat jerky sticks (or at least packaging alludes to the shape) and nice packet of treats. Our extra pup club toy was the great baseball. Mine LOVES it. It bounces and looks just like one. The theme is so cute.

I subscribe to the medium dog barkbox. I received different toys and different treats. My dog loves everything, every month. It’s worth mentioning that if you dog can’t tolerate an ingredient (what does that mean, that your dog’s luck with duck ran out?), or doesn’t play with a toy, Barkbox will exchange it. You just need to contact them and not abuse the system (by exchanging products every month).

I got the same toys in my small dog bark box. My dog can only pick up the ball by the flame, but she seems to like it.

In the Barkbox shop, there were several sizes of each toy listed and these are the larger ones. But the diameter of the small ball at 2.5 inches diameter still seemed big for something like a Yorkie, Shih Tzu, or Chihuahua, for example. And it is hard to tell the scale from photos.

Anyway, Nyx could pick up the whole ball in her mouth but she liked the flame best, too…
