Yummy Bazaar includes a fold-out that provides information about the items featured in the month’s box.

YummyBazaar-March-2016-Card2

This box contained products from Austria, Finland, Italy, France, Korea, Thailand, and Japan.

YummyBazaar-March-2016-Seaweed

Glico Mikado & Go! (39 g.)- $2.50

Mikado is the European version of Pocky, an iconic Japanese treat. (FYI both Pocky and Mikado are both made by the same company.) The name comes from the French word for the game Pick-up Sticks, and I believe you can actually use these to play the game, if you choose!

Green Tea Seaweed Gim by Chorip Dong (.18 oz.)- $0.58

Gimbap is a popular Korean dish made up of gim (dried seaweed sheets) and bap (steamed white rice). These sheets can also be eaten on their own, as a healthy, crunchy snack. Personally, I didn’t pick up on the green tea flavor, so it’s possible it’s added for health and not flavor.YummyBazaar-March-2016-Licorice

Finnish Sweet Licorice Bar by Halva (2 oz.)- $2.48

I think I first sampled Halva’s licorice in last year’s Scandinavian Box from Universal Yums. I love sweet licorice, and this bar has a nice balance of sweetness and bite.

Casali Chocolate Banana (22 g.)- $0.65

This chocolate banana bar is made with real Chiquita bananas! The filling is kind of like a cross between marshmallow and nougat, and the flavor is pretty great.

YummyBazaar-March-2016-Tea

Balconi Tiramisu- $0.37?

Balconi’s Tiramisu is made with mascarpone cream and coffee filling, and dusted with cocoa powder. Honestly, I thought it was just okay. Also, I’m not sure the price I found online is accurate. (It seems a little low.)

DeDe Instant Thai Tea (one 1.23 oz. packet)- $0.64

Typical Thai Tea is made by brewing strong black tea with spices (like anise, tamarind, or cardamom) and combining it with sugar and condensed milk. This instant version is pretty impressive. It’s very flavorful and super comforting.

Morinaga 70% Dark Chocolate (one tasting square)- $0.40

I’ve never tried Japanese chocolate before, and I’m seriously blown away by how great it is. The 70% dark chocolate is rich, creamy, and not at all bitter. I couldn’t find the 70% for sale online, so I’ve linked to Morinaga’s French Milk Chocolate.

Verdict: I think this is a really interesting box from Yummy Bazaar's Destination Food Club. I didn’t love every single product this month, but I had a great time discovering new foods from around the world. Also, I’m impressed that the box included so many foods that were new to me! Apart from the licorice, every item in this box was a new discovery. In terms of value, the retail value of the items comes in around $7.50. That doesn’t quite break even with the cost of the box, but it is possible that I’ve undervalued one or two of the items.

I signed up for the full experience box based on your great review of the January box. March was my second box and I am so impressed. March was Japan and my 8 year old granddaughter and I treat this as a monthly adventure. We have used the recipes in the booklet and they have turned out great. Customer service (David) has been wonderful and they seem genuinely interested in providing, unique items and look at sodium levels etc. at an affordable price point. I have also ordered from the store from a great selection of items. Thank you for your great reviews as I appreciated discovering Yummy Bazaar.

I like the various products offered; similar to Lindsay they were pretty much all a surprise except for the Thai Tea which is popular at Asian grocery stores. So I am not sure whether to stick with Universal Yums and their theme boxes from a single country or to switch to this one and their multi-origin approach, though the month to month seems a little better with Universal? I suppose I can try both for a few months since the price point is not too hard on the wallet and decide based on curation and value?

There’s an instant version of Thai tea?! This is dangerous knowledge!

I bought a box of that instant Thai Tea before at a local shop, and I really liked it.
