Surprise My Pet is a monthly subscription box for dogs.  Surprise My Pet customizes your box to your dog’s size.  Choose tiny (less than 10 pounds), small (10-20 pounds), medium (20-50 pounds), or large (50+ pounds).  This is a review of the “large” box (my dog, Nyx, weighs 84 pounds).

Surprise My Pet sent us this box for review purposes. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

Here’s a first look inside.  This box REALLY smelled like peanut butter when I opened it.

The Subscription Box: Surprise My Pet

The Cost: $25 per month on a month-to-month plan, $69 for a three month subscription, and $228 for a yearly subscription.  Shipping is free for all plans.

COUPON: Save 10% on your subscription with code ADDICTION!

The Products: 5-7 toys, treats, chews, and other goodies for dogs.

Ships to: US only (worldwide starting next month)

Good to Know: Surprise My Pet has changed ownership recently, and they have made some changes to the subscription as well!  They are adding cat boxes next month.  You can skip shipments if you need to.  They now have a “Paw for Paw” guarantee where if your dog doesn’t like an item, they’ll include a replacement item in your next box.  And they donate 10% of their profits to pet-related charities and shelters.

Included was an information card detailing the items for the month as well as some product literature and information about the ownership change.

surprisemypet-february-2016-chews

Jack for Joy – Value $9.99

This is made out of some sort of material that I expect Nyx would have a hard time destroying.  However, it is really too small to give to her.  I will be passing it along to a neighbor.

Flavorit Peanut Butter Flavor Infused Nylon Bone – Value $9.38

Sadly, this is marked as being for dogs up to 50 pounds so I will be passing it along as well.  But, in general, Nyx has loved nylon bones with flavors infused in them.  She just hasn’t gotten too many lately because of her IBD.

Bow Wow Pals Assorted Tennis Balls (3 pack) – Value $1.44

Nyx liked these a lot.  They’re not too much smaller than regular tennis balls.  However, they didn’t last very long, either (see below).  Note: I could only find them in massive sets (like 26 packages of 3 balls) so the value priced individually might be higher.

Handy Solutions Travel Lint Roller with Fresh Scent (30 sheets) – Value $0.75

Lint rollers are always welcome in my house.  It’s not Nyx’s hair that’s a problem, it’s my cat Monkey.  This is pretty tiny but it will get used!

surprisemypet-february-2016-treats

Loving Pets Puffsters Chips Cranberry and Chicken (4 oz) – Value $6.49

These are free of corn and soy, which is great.  And cranberry is actually a good inclusion in dog treats (Nyx is prone to UTIs and is taking massive amounts of D-mannose, which is the component of cranberry juice that helps with UTIs).  However, these also do have wheat flour and chicken, so watch out if your dog has allergies.  They are made in the USA and my bag is good until the end of 2017.

Ry’s Ruffery Healthy Dog Treats (grain free with peanut butter, 4 oz) – Value $4.75

This is a Shark Tank product/company.  These are vegetarian and grain free as well as made in the USA.  I will probably take a chance and give some of these to Nyx because they don’t contain any ingredients that raise any red flags for her medical condition.  They crumbled a bit in the package but I guess that is not so unusual.

Nyx loves her tennis balls.

She looks so goofy here, I had to include this photo as well.

As expected, however, they didn’t last too long…

Verdict: I calculated a value of $32.80 for the February 2016 Surprise My Pet dog subscription box.   That is an improvement of a couple of dollars over last month and is above the price of the box for a month-to-month subscription (and an even better deal with a longer subscription or a coupon).  I discovered a couple of new brands and products, which was nice.  I do wish the toys had been somewhat bigger, however.

Ragan, I am a little mystified by the small toys in the large dog box? For that price point I expect sturdy large toys and perhaps consider a little customization for those with special needs. I have a large Lab and he can eat anything and mows through treats in seconds and toys in minutes. I would love to try something like this but unless they are more mindful of sending larger dog toys and treats, I think I will wait to see how this new ownership develops.

I have this issue with several of the dog subscriptions. I think the problem is that the size cutoff for a lot of them is 50+ pounds for “large.” But a 50 pound dog is not really a large dog, and dogs of course get much larger (my brother used to have a 130 pound bull mastiff and I have seen some huge Newfoundlands, Great Danes, Leonbergers, St. Bernards, etc.).

So anyway, what might be appropriate for a 50 pound dog is not necessarily appropriate for a 75 or 80 pound (or even larger) dog. I would like to see pretty much all the dog boxes offer an an “extra large” option.

One you might take a look at is Bullymake Box. You can select your dog’s size in 10 pound increments there. I’ve only gotten it for two months (there are reviews here on MSA) but I have felt the toys were size appropriate. (They are also all for heavy chewers. If your dog is not a heavy chewer or you want plushes, Pet Treater usually has larger toys though I am not as enthusiastic about their treats.)
