Pet Treater is a subscription box for dogs.  Select from small (up to 20 pounds), medium (21-50 pounds), and large (51+ pounds).  This review is for a large dog box.  My dog Nyx, a Rottweiler, is about 84 pounds right now.

My Subscription Addiction paid for this subscription. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

pettreater-february-2016-letter

There was no information card in this box, but it did include a letter addressed to Nyx!

And I’m guessing this is a theme spoiler for the March box!

pettreater-february-2016-love

Juliet Bandana – Value $1 (?)

Sorry, Nyx couldn’t model this for you – while it does fit around her neck, it doesn’t really tie very well.  Rottweiler necks are huge.

Hugglehounds Plush Heart – Value $5.98

Nyx loves plushes.  She’s not always kind to them, but she loves them.  So this was a hit.

pettreater-february-2016-treats

Pur Luv Mini Sizzlin Strips (extra chewy chicken and sweet potato, 6 oz) – Value $4.13

These are made in the USA and contain no byproducts.  I’m not so sure this is the current packaging, though, because these expire in May of this year, and the image looks a little different than what I found elsewhere online.

Nature’s Recipe Oven Baked Biscuits Lamb Flavor (19 oz) – Value $12.29

This is a huge bag, over a pound.  I don’t think this is part of the current Nature’s Recipe product line, though, because this bag expires next month (April 2016) and I can only find it from third-party sellers on Amazon.  I’m kind of disappointed at getting two bags of treats that are near their expiration dates.

pettreater-february-2016-warthog

Carolina Biscuit Co. Naturally Healthy Dog Biscuits (vegan and grain free parsley hearts, 4 oz) – Value $6.50

This bag came open during shipping and many of the biscuits were kind of crushed.  (I salvaged what I could for the photo.)  I’m happy to have discovered this company, though – they make a lot of treats that have limited ingredients and should be suitable for dogs with allergies and dietary issues.

Hugglehounds Ruff-Tex Warthog – Value $12.45

Apparently I need to work on my animal identification skills because this is called “Tony the Pony” on Amazon.  It squeaks so Nyx loves it.  Not super long-lasting, though, but most toys aren’t with her.

pettreater-february-2016-journal

Markings by C.R. Gibson 240 Page Journal – Value $9

Pet Treater always includes something “for your human” and this month it is this journal.  I can’t find this on the C.R. Gibson site (it is probably a discontinued style) so I am estimating the value based on some of their other offerings.  I will put this with my stash of notebooks from subscription boxes and it will get used.  I will never have to buy a small notebook again!

ASPCA Collection Fleece Pet Throw (35 x 50 inches) – Value $8

This is another item I can’t find currently for sale online.  I took the value from a fleece throw of the same size I found on Amazon.  I think the cats will use this (if I fold up a new blanket anywhere, whatever cat whose fur will show up the most against the color of the blanket will immediately sit on it…).

pettreater-february-2016-bluemonster

Hugglehounds Floppy Sole Large Bright Blue – Value $12.95

Nyx thought this was pretty awesome.  And it was size-appropriate.  So that’s basically a win.  Except when it comes to durability…

pettreater-february-2016-nyx

Here’s Nyx with the blue monster toy.

pettreater-february-2016-arms

And here are the toy’s arms, which she removed.

Verdict: I calculated a value of $72.30 for the February Pet Treater Dog Subscription Box.  Strictly from a value perspective, that is a great deal.  However, I’m disappointed that the treats were so close to expiration and that so many of the items are only available as closeouts or from third-party sellers on Amazon (who probably got them the same place Pet Treater did).  Perhaps this is a matter of personal preference, but I like being introduced to new items and brands in subscription boxes rather than getting stuff that’s been out for awhile and may no longer be available.  Nyx did like the toys and I’m happy to have found Carolina Biscuit Company, though!

I chose to receive for small dog and think I was sent a box for a large dog
The toys and bones are waaaay too big for my tiny poodle Jake ?

Another incredibly good box from PetTreater. I’ve been a member ever since the first review and every single once has blown away anything I have ever received from barkbox. As far as close expiration dates, does not bother me in the least. They will only last a couple weeks anyway, so a couple months is fine. And I look for close dated food for myself at the grocery stores 🙂

I recommend this box to every dog owner I know!

After trying many dog subscription boxes, this one is my favorite! The value is amazing & I don’t mind the discontinued items. I also recommend it to every dog owner I know!

I always enjoy seeing what Nyx does to the toys. “Here is the toy. Here are the toy’s arms; Nyx ‘removed’ them.” Our boy does the same and he’s 13. He’s also a huge fan of beheadings. And then he enjoys p,saying with just the heads like balls.

Hmmm…maybe I am in the minority, but I really like this box! I think it is a really great pet box. I especially like that the products are made in the USA, so I don’t worry as much about the ingredients. While I may be able to also get a great deal on Amazon, I would rather someone else do the leg work, find the deals and pass them on my way. Besides the dogs don’t seem to care if they get the most current season’s pet toys. Regarding expiration dates: My son did a little work for a well known company that sells pet food and the expiration dates for their pet food and snacks weren’t based on when the food went bad or lost nutrition. The dates were based on when the food may begin to lose a little flavor. (Our dogs tend to devour them right away anyway.)

That being said, I do like the reviews and the photos. And I have to say I chucked out loud when I read about your dog’s colorful poo. 

I find that odd because I cannot find anything anywhere that verifies it is okay to use expired food for pets. If anything, I found cases where pets have gotten really sick. Dog food items are no different than people food items- processed pet and people food expire because food degrades and picks up bacteria over time. Even preservatives break down over time. This anecdote sounds like dangerous advice to passing around.

Extremely dangerous advice… don’t give your pets expired food!!

I got the exact same box and though cute, the bright blue toy was a disaster for both my dogs. They instantly starting shredding and attempting to eat the small, fuzzy blue fibers so that toy was taken away. The squeaker on the pony is a bit obnoxious, but I use it to get my dog’s attention if he’s not obeying, like on a walk when he gets antsy hearing other dogs bark. The best part of this box was the treats, bummer about the close expiration, but I have two dogs, one of which is a puppy, so treats for training are great. I cancelled my membership because I wasn’t able to use many of the items unfortunately.

Nyx ate a lot of the blue fibers. Her poo was colorful for a few days…

What happened to the spoiler that was in the January box? Wasn’t it supposed to be a pillow cover? I just got my first PT box and was amazed at the amount of good quality items you get for less than $25. This is my fave box so far. Thanks again for a great site!

Beth

We often have rainbow poo at our house from our Izzy.

I read these reviews merely for the pictures of Nyx both enjoying the toys and destroying them!! LOL…..

Its disappointing that they send all that discontinued items. At least the toys were cool… for however long they lasted…. lol
