My Pretend Place is a quarterly subscription for kids who love to dress up and play pretend! That just so happens to be one of my kids’ favorite activities. My Pretend Place lets you choose between boy, girl, or neutral costume categories to receive in your subscription box. They also have a fairly new Build Your Own option where you select a theme for every quarter in the order you wish to receive them.

This box was sent to us for review purposes. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes).

This month’s theme is Princess!

One very cool thing that My Pretend Place does is include a letter to the child with every shipment. The letter is from a fictional character and helps initiate the play/pretend scenario. I like that it gives the kids some practice reading, too. My 7 year old was able to read the letter to my younger 2 children.

extras

Extras – Value $2? These are items that come standard with every package from My Pretend Place: a thank-you card, a handle, and some stickers to decorate the box so it can be kept for storage. We also received a magnet this time. I love that the box itself is reusable!

Don't Kiss the Frog!: Princess Stories with Attitude Compiled by Fiona Waters – Value $7.97 on Amazon

We love getting books in subscription boxes! This is a particularly fun book as well. It puts a twist on some of the traditional princess stories, for example, one of the stories in the book is “The Princess and the P.E.” Here is Amazon’s synopsis:

Perfect for girls who love tiaras, ball-gowns, and happy endings--but also sports, silly jokes, and being different. Featuring the work of seven writers and three illustrators, this anthology of "princess stories with attitude" will make kids laugh as they encounter a bevy of sleepy, sporty, clumsy, brave, resourceful, and curious princesses. The exuberant typographic design is an excellent match for the story-telling style and colorful artwork.

Here are a few pages from the book:

My Pretend Place also usually includes a craft or some props with each costume shipment. This quarter, there are two fun items:

stamp_set_1

Melissa & Doug Wooden Princess Stamp Set – Value $9.99 on Amazon

This comes with a sturdy wooden tray, pink and purple stamp pad, five colored pencils and 9 regal stamps.

This includes a royal wooden mirror, glitter and craft glue, sparkling gems, and stickers.

Melissa & Doug Princess Role Play Costume Set – Value $29.99 on Amazon

This is a very high quality costume and I love that it is machine washable!  It is sized for ages 3-6. The skirt even has a sort of flexible tubing sewn inside the bottom edge to make the skirt fuller. My 7 year old daughter was impressed as well and I would consider her a princess costume expert.

The costume set also comes with a crown and wand. Here is a close up of the crown on my younger daughter.

Here is my daughter in her full princess costume! She is thrilled!

My 7 year old daughter can also fit into the costume, but it is a little short on her. She would like me to request that My Pretend Place consider carrying costumes in larger sizes as well. So, My Pretend Place, if you are reading this, consider this an official request. ☺

VerdictMy Pretend Place is great! They are extremely consistent in delivering a wonderful, imaginative play package for children ages 2-6. This is one of our favorite subscription boxes. The curation is excellent and stimulating and the contents are high quality. Based on Amazon’s current pricing for the items included, the retail value here is $54.94 which is just over break even with the cost of the box. Plus My Pretend Place sends your child monthly goodies (for free!) on the months they don’t get a costume. Including those, the retail value is significantly higher. And their website has more themed craft ideas and kid-friendly recipes. How awesome is that?
