Hamptons-March-2016-Pan

De Buyer French Blue Steel Crepe Pan- $19.96

Growing up, my mom regularly made dessert crepes using her 1970’s era Sunbeam crepe maker, and they were my absolute favorite dessert. I loved them so much that crepe batter is the first recipe I ever memorized by heart. I still love making crepes, but I’ve never purchased a proper crepe pan for myself (I always just use a medium non-stick pan). When Hamptons Lane announced the theme for this box, I think I actually squealed out loud with delight! Now that I have the box in my hands, I’m even more excited. This De Buyer Crepe Pan is gorgeous in person. It’s very sturdy and seems to be well made.

Berndes Non-Stick Crepe Spreader- $5?

Even though I make crepes pretty regularly, I’ve never used a spreader before. (I’ve always found that swirling the pan is enough to evenly distribute the batter.) Still, I’ve certainly seen professional crepe makers use them, so I’m happy to give one a try!

Hamptons-March-2016-Marmalade

Eat This Orange Saffron and Cardamom Marmalade (5 oz.)- $10

How cute is this jar?

Hamptons-March-2016-MarmaladeTop

I love the packaging, and I also love the sound of this flavor combination. I’m always on the hunt for new and interesting flavor combinations, and I think this is the first time I’ve ever seen saffron paired with oranges and cardamom.

Hamptons-March-2016-Mix

Hamptons Lane French Style Crepe Mix by Bear Branch Milling Co.- $8

This French-style crepe mix was blended exclusively for Hamptons Lane. To make crepe batter with it, you combine some of the mix with eggs, milk, water, and melted butter.

Hamptons-March-2016-Chocolate

CC Made Dark Chocolate Caramel Sauce (4 oz.)- $5

I’ve sampled CC Made products before, and I’m a big fan of their sauces. This chocolate caramel sauce is thick and rich. My only complaint is that the jar could be bigger!

Hamptons-March-2016-Herbes

The Spice House Herbes de Provence- $3.99

This herbes de Provence is made in the traditional style. It’s a hand mixed blend of rosemary, French thyme, tarragon, basil, savory, cracked fennel, lavender, marjoram, oregano,  dill, and chervil.

Hamptons-March-2016-Recipes1

Hamptons Lane always includes a number of recipes to accompany the items they send, and this month I decided to try two different crepe recipes: Savory Breakfast Crepes and Strawberry Banana Chocolate Crepes! (These recipes can be found on the Hamptons Lane Website.)

Hamptons-March-2016-CrepePrep

I began by prepping the ingredients I’d need for the crepes. First, I made the crepe batter and let it chill in the fridge while I prepared the fillings. I scrambled eggs with butter and herbes de Provence, sliced a banana and some strawberries, fried bacon, and grated gruyere.

Hamptons-March-2016-CrepeCooking

I set the fillings aside and retrieved the batter from the fridge. At first, I had some difficulty with the crepes sticking to the pan, but I quickly found the right levels of heat and oil that kept the crepes from sticking.

Hamptons-March-2016-Crepes

I cooked all of the crepes and stacked them on a plate.

Hamptons-March-2016-CheeseCrepes

When all of the crepes were ready, I used half of them to make Savory Breakfast Crepes. I placed the crepes, one by one, back into the crepe pan and melted gruyere on top. As soon as the cheese got melty, I added scrambled egg and crispy bacon, folded them into triangles, and arranged them on a serving plate.

I finished them with an extra sprinkle of herbes de Provence.

These were fantastic. The crepes had a mild sweetness that nicely complemented the salty bacon, rich cheese, and herby eggs. I couldn’t stop eating them!

Hamptons-March-2016-StrawberryCrepes

With the remaining crepes, I made Strawberry Banana Chocolate Crepes. I filled each crepe with sliced strawberries and bananas, folded them into triangles, arranged them on a plate, and drizzled them with CC Made’s Dark Chocolate Caramel Sauce. (Note: I warmed it up before drizzling.)

These were great, too! Whereas the savory fillings brought out the sweetness of the crepes, I found that the fruity filling brought out the savory flavors of the crepes. I would happily make (and eat) these again very soon.

Verdict: This box from Hamptons Lane might be my favorite one yet. The crepe pan is a great tool I didn’t previously have in my kitchen, and I’m so impressed with the crepe mix, chocolate caramel sauce, and herbs de Provence. Based on the prices I found online, the items included in this box total $52 retail. That’s not quite as high as I’ve come to expect from Hamptons Lane, but, for me, it’s balanced by the spot on curation. Despite the lower than average value, this box is a big win for me.

My daughter and I were excited upon the arrival of this box to make crepes for her French class. We were so disappointed in packaging of this box. It was our first from Hamptons Lane. It arrived poorly packaged with the flour crepe batter opened and caked all over the inside of the box and contents. What a mess! No recipe book either. Had to write for a return/exchange. Disappointed!!

If your crepes were sticking, make sure that you’ve followed the seasoning instructions that came with the pan – I noticed that they didn’t advise it in the booklet as they did with the tagine, so it could be easily missed! That said, I loved this theme and had a great time making crepes (for the first time!). I can’t wait for the next box, as usual!

Your crepes look beautiful! This was my first Hamptons Lane box and I was so delighted to get it. The pan was awesome…at first…then after my 5th crepe, they ALL started sticking right in the center of the pan! I don’t know what the issue was. I kept wiping off the stuck/burnt batter from that spot (with a dry or damp paper towel) and re-buttering before each crepe, but every single one after that stuck too. It made it almost impossible to flip them without tearing. Any ideas what the heck I did wrong?

Impressive. Can I hire you are for parties!
Looks amazing – and I don’t even eat crepes.

maybe I should give this box another look. Passed on this month after the Thai box coming so late.

You did a beautiful job with those crepes. Agree with losing the first one to the pan, although with use the pan will become more seasoned and that should solve the problem.
I’m confused about the crepe mix. Sounds like it’s a bag of flour, given what you need to add, making it overpriced. Other than that and the low-ish value, sounds like a great box.
Yes, rest that batter at room temp!

Impressive!

I’ve made crepes for years and you always lose the first one on the pan as it is basically seasoning the pan. I’ve also had more success with letting the batter sit at room temperature while I prep, rather than in the fridge as the batter will spread easier and thinner. The crepes look delicious! If you don’t have a pan already this is an awesome box to have!

Beautiful box! The pan was so elegant and easy to wield — my favorite filling was the saffron cardamom marmalade, absolutely delicious. I have to agree, favorite Hamptons Lane box so far. Well done!! How about a popcorn box next? We’ve been eating a lot of it lately and would be up for shaking things up a little 🙂
