De Buyer French Blue Steel Crepe Pan- $19.96
Growing up, my mom regularly made dessert crepes using her 1970’s era Sunbeam crepe maker, and they were my absolute favorite dessert. I loved them so much that crepe batter is the first recipe I ever memorized by heart. I still love making crepes, but I’ve never purchased a proper crepe pan for myself (I always just use a medium non-stick pan). When Hamptons Lane announced the theme for this box, I think I actually squealed out loud with delight! Now that I have the box in my hands, I’m even more excited. This De Buyer Crepe Pan is gorgeous in person. It’s very sturdy and seems to be well made.
Berndes Non-Stick Crepe Spreader- $5?
Even though I make crepes pretty regularly, I’ve never used a spreader before. (I’ve always found that swirling the pan is enough to evenly distribute the batter.) Still, I’ve certainly seen professional crepe makers use them, so I’m happy to give one a try!
Eat This Orange Saffron and Cardamom Marmalade (5 oz.)- $10
How cute is this jar?
I love the packaging, and I also love the sound of this flavor combination. I’m always on the hunt for new and interesting flavor combinations, and I think this is the first time I’ve ever seen saffron paired with oranges and cardamom.
Hamptons Lane French Style Crepe Mix by Bear Branch Milling Co.- $8
This French-style crepe mix was blended exclusively for Hamptons Lane. To make crepe batter with it, you combine some of the mix with eggs, milk, water, and melted butter.
CC Made Dark Chocolate Caramel Sauce (4 oz.)- $5
I’ve sampled CC Made products before, and I’m a big fan of their sauces. This chocolate caramel sauce is thick and rich. My only complaint is that the jar could be bigger!
The Spice House Herbes de Provence- $3.99
This herbes de Provence is made in the traditional style. It’s a hand mixed blend of rosemary, French thyme, tarragon, basil, savory, cracked fennel, lavender, marjoram, oregano, dill, and chervil.
Hamptons Lane always includes a number of recipes to accompany the items they send, and this month I decided to try two different crepe recipes: Savory Breakfast Crepes and Strawberry Banana Chocolate Crepes! (These recipes can be found on the Hamptons Lane Website.)
I began by prepping the ingredients I’d need for the crepes. First, I made the crepe batter and let it chill in the fridge while I prepared the fillings. I scrambled eggs with butter and herbes de Provence, sliced a banana and some strawberries, fried bacon, and grated gruyere.
I set the fillings aside and retrieved the batter from the fridge. At first, I had some difficulty with the crepes sticking to the pan, but I quickly found the right levels of heat and oil that kept the crepes from sticking.
I cooked all of the crepes and stacked them on a plate.
When all of the crepes were ready, I used half of them to make Savory Breakfast Crepes. I placed the crepes, one by one, back into the crepe pan and melted gruyere on top. As soon as the cheese got melty, I added scrambled egg and crispy bacon, folded them into triangles, and arranged them on a serving plate.
I finished them with an extra sprinkle of herbes de Provence.
These were fantastic. The crepes had a mild sweetness that nicely complemented the salty bacon, rich cheese, and herby eggs. I couldn’t stop eating them!
With the remaining crepes, I made Strawberry Banana Chocolate Crepes. I filled each crepe with sliced strawberries and bananas, folded them into triangles, arranged them on a plate, and drizzled them with CC Made’s Dark Chocolate Caramel Sauce. (Note: I warmed it up before drizzling.)
These were great, too! Whereas the savory fillings brought out the sweetness of the crepes, I found that the fruity filling brought out the savory flavors of the crepes. I would happily make (and eat) these again very soon.
Verdict: This box from Hamptons Lane might be my favorite one yet. The crepe pan is a great tool I didn’t previously have in my kitchen, and I’m so impressed with the crepe mix, chocolate caramel sauce, and herbs de Provence. Based on the prices I found online, the items included in this box total $52 retail. That’s not quite as high as I’ve come to expect from Hamptons Lane, but, for me, it’s balanced by the spot on curation. Despite the lower than average value, this box is a big win for me.
