BarkBox is a subscription box for dogs.  It’s the most popular dog subscription box.  You’ve seen the small dog version, but since they customize based on dog size, we thought you might like to see what you’d get if you have a large dog, so this is a review of the “Big & Bold” box for a 50+ pound dog.  (My dog, Nyx, is a Rottweiler who currently weighs about 84 pounds.)

My Subscription Addiction pays for this subscription. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

The Subscription Box: BarkBox

Good to Know: BarkBox offers a heavy chewer option.  After you sign up, you can email them to request this.  This box is supposedly the heavy chewer option.

The theme this month was “Sherlock Bones.”  The information card no longer lists all the items in the box but you can look them up online.

barkboxlarge-march-2016-krunchie

EOS Turkey and Sweet Potato Dog Treats (4 oz) – Value $6

These are made in the USA and contain no by-products, grains, soy, or fillers, so they should be suitable for a lot of dogs with allergies.

Butcher’s Block Bones 9” Krunchie Tube – Value $7

We got one of these last month in BarkBox, too.  I’m not going to complain, though.  I think they’re pretty nasty but Nyx likes them a lot and that is what counts.  (For whatever reason, she seems OK with consuming beef products occasionally, despite her IBD.)

Lamb Lung Toasters from Superior Farms Pet Provisions (2.5 oz) – Value $9

This is another treat made in the USA.  They only have a single protein source (lamb, from the lung).  I will try these slowly with Nyx.  She doesn’t have much experience with lamb so they might work.  (Trying new treats with Nyx is like a 2-week process just so I don’t upset her system.)

Delca Sherlock Hat (Large) – Value $14

This was sturdier than a lot of BarkBox toys.  Nyx did manage to damage the fabric a bit, but she didn’t swallow any pieces at all this time, which is a major improvement.

Think Pet Innovations Telephone Booth – Value $14

I’m saving this for another night (Nyx gets to destroy ONE toy every couple of days).  I didn’t get the link between Sherlock Holmes and a telephone booth at first, but when I Googled it, I found some discussion and photos of this particular telephone booth in London.

This toy lasted longer than most.  Nyx did manage to rip the outer fabric a bit but it is not in pieces.  Yet.

Verdict: I calculated a value of about $50 for this month’s BarkBox (large dog version).   That is about average for BarkBox and is considerably above the price of the subscription (and is an even better deal for longer-term subscriptions or if you can get a coupon deal).  The toys seemed sturdier than usual this month and the treats were high quality and grain free with single protein sources, which I like.  This was a great month for BarkBox for us.

Where are all of these items made?

From the BarkBox FAQ:

“All treats are sourced from the USA and Canada, and chews are sourced from the USA, Canada, South America, Australia and New Zealand.”

Toys could be from anywhere. But you would have a hard time finding a dog toy that is not made in China.

We received the same box. My dog enjoyed peeling the fabric off the phone booth. He hasn’t ruined the plastic part yet. I was really surprised that he liked the hat. It’s not something I would have picked for him. The bow on top was ripped off in about 2 seconds but except for a few rips in the fabric, it’s still intact 3 days later

I was so surprised Nyx didn’t rip the bow off the top. But the hat totally lasted a lot longer than many other toys we’ve received lately.

The card said that the phone booth was virtually indestructible. My dog tore a hole through the plastic within 15 minutes… but he didn’t totally destroy it so I guess that’s a win!

same with my dog! he got through it super fast…. the hat looks like a fun toy he would have liked but we got this plush human sherlock toy that so far has lasted longer than the “indestructible” one LOL

Ooh! Good to know about the heavy chewer option. Our Kato is a lab mix and can get VERY destructive with toys. Back in February, he managed to get the BarkBox off the counter before I could open it and opened it himself. I walked into the living room to find him sitting happily in the middle of BarkBox shreds already chewing on the noodle box toy.

I have a rottie too. Theodore is his name and destroying his toys is his game! One of his favorite toys was a super big thick rope. It took him a while to break down and I can’t find a replacement. 🙁

My dog, Bella, received the same 2 toys in her Barkbox. I saved the toys to give to her on another day, otherwise she would have been like Nyx and torn off the fabric of the hat. She easily finds the weakest point in the toy, we’re lucky if it survives for 2 days. She and Nyx should be hired as a toy testers.

Rottis is more lie 2 minutes. Amazing how smart they are. They find the weak spot in seconds and have the prize out(the speaker) in a couple of minutes!

It’s weird, but my last dog was a Rottweiler and she kept the same plush toys for years. But Nyx isn’t like that at all. (And yes, Nyx is excellent at removing squeakers.)

Ragan

2 days would be amazing. The average toy lifetime at my house is about 5 minutes…
