BarkBox is a subscription box for dogs. It’s the most popular dog subscription box. You’ve seen the small dog version, but since they customize based on dog size, we thought you might like to see what you’d get if you have a large dog, so this is a review of the “Big & Bold” box for a 50+ pound dog. (My dog, Nyx, is a Rottweiler who currently weighs about 84 pounds.)
My Subscription Addiction pays for this subscription. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)
The Subscription Box: BarkBox
The Cost: $29 per month on a month-to-month plan, save with longer subscriptions!
COUPON: Get a free extra month when you sign up for any length subscription with code FREEBIEBOXMSA
OR
Save 10% off any new BarkBox subscription with code ADDICTION.
The Products: Toys, treats, and grooming products selected for your dog based on size (choose “Small and Cute” for 0-20 pounds, “Just Right” for 20-50 pounds, and “Big & Bold” for dogs 50+ pounds).
Ships to: US and Canada
Good to Know: BarkBox offers a heavy chewer option. After you sign up, you can email them to request this. This box is supposedly the heavy chewer option.

The theme this month was “Sherlock Bones.” The information card no longer lists all the items in the box but you can look them up online.
EOS Turkey and Sweet Potato Dog Treats (4 oz) – Value $6
These are made in the USA and contain no by-products, grains, soy, or fillers, so they should be suitable for a lot of dogs with allergies.
Butcher’s Block Bones 9” Krunchie Tube – Value $7
We got one of these last month in BarkBox, too. I’m not going to complain, though. I think they’re pretty nasty but Nyx likes them a lot and that is what counts. (For whatever reason, she seems OK with consuming beef products occasionally, despite her IBD.)
Lamb Lung Toasters from Superior Farms Pet Provisions (2.5 oz) – Value $9
This is another treat made in the USA. They only have a single protein source (lamb, from the lung). I will try these slowly with Nyx. She doesn’t have much experience with lamb so they might work. (Trying new treats with Nyx is like a 2-week process just so I don’t upset her system.)
Delca Sherlock Hat (Large) – Value $14
This was sturdier than a lot of BarkBox toys. Nyx did manage to damage the fabric a bit, but she didn’t swallow any pieces at all this time, which is a major improvement.
Think Pet Innovations Telephone Booth – Value $14
I’m saving this for another night (Nyx gets to destroy ONE toy every couple of days). I didn’t get the link between Sherlock Holmes and a telephone booth at first, but when I Googled it, I found some discussion and photos of this particular telephone booth in London.
This toy lasted longer than most. Nyx did manage to rip the outer fabric a bit but it is not in pieces. Yet.
Verdict: I calculated a value of about $50 for this month’s BarkBox (large dog version). That is about average for BarkBox and is considerably above the price of the subscription (and is an even better deal for longer-term subscriptions or if you can get a coupon deal). The toys seemed sturdier than usual this month and the treats were high quality and grain free with single protein sources, which I like. This was a great month for BarkBox for us.
What do you think of the March 2016 BarkBox dog subscription box? Do you subscribe to any dog or cat boxes?
