Pooch Perks is a monthly subscription box for dogs containing made-in-the-USA treats (that are mostly natural, organic, non-GMO, and gluten free) and toys for your dog (with preference given to USA-based manufacturers). Choose from boxes for small dogs (less than 35 pounds) and boxes for medium-to-large dogs (35 pounds or more). My dog, Nyx, is an 83-pound Rottweiler (she’s gaining weight again, which is a good thing) and this is a review of the medium/large box.
My Subscription Addiction paid for this subscription. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)
The Subscription Box: Pooch Perks
The Cost: Choose from Pennywise Pooch ($20 for 2-3 items), Popular Pooch ($29 for 4 items), Patriotic Pooch ($45 for 5-6 made in the USA items), or Pampered Pooch ($50 for 6 items). This is a review of the “Popular Pooch” box.
The Products: Made-in-the-USA treats and toys for your dog. Treats included in the boxes are usually from smaller companies.
Ships to: USA (free!)

The box came with this information card. At first it kind of confused me, but after reviewing the subscription packages that are available, I think what you do is start by looking at the Pennywise Pooch chart, then adding the items for the other subscription upgrades.
Dessert Themed Squeaker Toy – Value $1.22
The information card lists this as being worth $7 but it doesn’t have a specific brand name on it and I found a bunch of similar items for around $1 online. It is far too small to give to Nyx although I’m certain she would love it…
Dawg Grillz Ballz – Value $8.33
Nyx stole this out of the box but it’s another toy that is too small for her to have (the packaging says it is for small and medium dogs and she is definitely neither of those…). It is peanut butter flavored and is supposed to float.
Three Paws Gourmet Confetti Bones (4 oz) – Value $5.71
These are vegan and gluten free. Nyx may actually be able to have them with all her food issues since they don’t contain any grain or animal proteins. (The information card said they were worth $10 but the manufacturer is selling a 7 ounce bag for $10 and this was only a 4 ounce bag.)
Paws Barkery Snicker Doodles (8 oz) – Value $6.99
These have wheat flour as the first ingredient. Probably fine for most dogs, so my sister’s bulldogs will be enjoying these since wheat is out for Nyx. Paws Barkery is a small, USA-based business.
The toys this month were too small for Nyx to play with, but I didn’t want to leave you without any doggie pictures. So here are Nyx and Sneaky chilling in the living room…
Verdict: I calculated a value of about $22.25 for the January 2016 Pooch Perks dog subscription box. That is somewhat under the cost of the box and part of the reason is they overvalued some of the items from the box based on what you can get them for elsewhere online. Also, for what it’s worth, they include $8 shipping on the information card as part of the value/savings.
Further, I’m not sure this box is a good fit for anyone with a large dog. 35 pounds is way too small of a cutoff – Nyx weighs almost 50 pounds more than that! I couldn’t even take pictures of her with the toys this month for fear she would swallow them whole. Last month’s value was much higher and if you have a small dog, the cost may average out over a few months. But right now, I can’t recommend this subscription for dogs weighing 50 pounds or more.
What do you think of the January 2016 Pooch Perks box? Do you subscribe to any dog or cat boxes?
