Boxwalla is a subscription box company dedicated to introducing subscribers to the best in food, books, film, and green beauty. They curate bi-monthly boxes in each of those four categories.
Boxwalla's Food Box introduces subscribers to gourmet food products from small-batch producers across the US. The curators at Boxwalla seek out the best American artisanal products, and they only include their favorite products from any given category.
This is a review of Boxwalla’s December Food Box. Subscriptions for February are currently closed, so, if you sign up now, your first box will arrive in April. (The cutoff date for each box is the15th of the preceding month. So, to receive the April box, orders need to be placed by March 15th.)
I’m really impressed with Boxwalla’s packaging. The box is sturdy and beautiful, and it’s crafted from tree-free paper by a small company in Rajasthan, India. The teapot sticker is so cute, too!

BlackBird Salty Sweet Granola w/ Jacobsen's Salt (12 oz.)- $11.95
The first product selected for this breakfast box is Salty Sweet Granola, a collaboration between Jacobsen Salt Company and Blackbird Food Company. Jacobsen’s salt adds a fantastic savory quality to Blackbird’s mix of rolled oats, pistachios, unsweetened coconut chips, dried sour cherries, pumpkin seeds, chia seeds, and maple syrup. My tastes veer towards the salty (over the sweet), so this granola is right up my alley. Jacobsen’s salt is used in top restaurants, and is renowned for it’s briny flavor. I’m a big fan of crunchy granola, and I love the subtle saltiness of this one.
Oregon Natural White Truffle Oil (2 oz.)- $14.99
Many of the truffle oils on the market are chemically enhanced but not this one. It’s made using white truffles that have been harvested in Oregon’s Willamette Valley. I’ve never used truffle oil for breakfast, but Boxwalla recommends adding a little to scrambled eggs. Alternately, they suggest mixing the truffle oil into mayonnaise, which set my mind racing to find a way to incorporate it into a breakfast sandwich. I think I love the sound of a turkey & bacon breakfast sandwich with a fried egg and truffled mayo!
INNA Jam Black Mission Fig (10 oz.)- $13.50
I’ve sampled products from INNA Jam before, and I’m a big fan. I also love fig jam, so I was thrilled to see this product in the box. It’s a 2015 Good Foods Award Winner, and, wow, is it tasty. While Boxwalla points out that it’s delicious straight out of the jar, they recommend using it to make a simple breakfast tart. Just top puff pastry with this jam and a little goat cheese for an easy and delicious morning treat.
ChocXO Guantupi Single Origin Chocolate (2.8 oz.)- $8.50
ChocXO 70% Dark Chocolate + Espresso Bar (1.4 oz.)- $1.99
While I don’t normally expect to see chocolate in a breakfast box, Boxwalla makes a good case for it’s inclusion. The curators first tried the award-winning Guantupi chocolate at ChocXO’s Costa Mesa-based cafe as a sipping chocolate, and they recommend melting down this bar (at a low temperature) and drinking it alongside your breakfast. As for the Dark Chocolate + Espresso bar? Well, since you’ll be drinking your chocolate, it only seem appropriate to eat your coffee.
Verdict: I’m really impressed with Boxwalla's Food Box! All of the items they included are fantastic, and it’s clear from the included note that they were selected with great care. I’m also blown away by the packaging. Presentation wise, this is one of the most beautiful food boxes I think I’ve ever received! The retail value of the items in this box totals just under $51. That exceeds the cost of the box (albeit slightly), so I’m pleased with the value. Boxwalla is a new company, and they certainly seem to be off to a great start. I look forward to seeing what future boxes hold!
