Each box comes with an insert card, sometimes the content is listed, other times it’s not like this unboxing.  The cover says the theme this month is “Holiday Heartbreaker” and has a great shot of model Maya Samuelsson.  They included a mini candy cane which arrived broken, but no worries, it tasted just fine. 🙂

SoftSheen-Carson – Amla Legend – 10-in1 Silky Blow-Out Elixir – .34oz – Value: $1.00

You all know I’m not a fan of hair samples in foil packaging, so I don’t have much to say about this elixir already.  It claims to help repair damaged hair along with a list of other quality properties.  Unfortunately, the listed ingredients from products in this line says otherwise.

SoftSheen-Carson – Amla Legend – Moisture Remedy Shampoo – 13.5oz – Value: $6.30

This shampoo claims to cleanse and detangle hair while moisturizing damaged hair.  Just like the elixir above, the ingredients list kills it for me!  It’s full of sulfates and that’s just a no-go for the curly heads in my house. It saddens me when someone gets a box full of products they can’t use.  I’m going to stay positive because someone out here probably loved this line of hair care and made it work.

SoftSheen-Carson – Amla Legend – Moisture Remedy Conditioner – 13.5oz -Value: $6.30

This conditioner is said to be great for all hair types.  I don’t agree on a few of the ingredients listed and was going to try it out, but decided against it.  We have so many awesome hair products already open, I can give this away as a set to someone who may want to try this brand.

SoftSheen-Carson – Amla Legend – Silky Blow-Out Masque – 9oz – Value: $7.00

This masque has the same ingredients as the conditioner.  I have no plans of testing this out on anyone in my house.  It says you can put it in your hair after shampooing, then sit under the dryer and it will protect it from the heat and keeps frizz at bay.

SoftSheen-Carson – Amla Legend – Treasured Temple Edge Tamer – 2oz – Value: $7.00

I’m keeping this one!  There was only one ingredient that caught my side eye and it was at the bottom end of the list.  I think it’s worth a shot.  I have another edge control gel open at this time, so this will hang out in my hair care stash for now.  Like most edge control cremes and gels, this one claims to smooth away frizz is flake free.

Cargo – Picture Perfect CC Cream in Medium Dark – 1oz – Value: $34.00

I was so excited to try this out.  The swatch on my arm below sheered out nicely.  After applying to my face which is much darker than the inside of my arm, the SPF left an ashy cast all over.  And it has a very strong smell that I’m also contributing to the sunscreen. #notcute  This may work perfectly on brown skin just above the range of my arm.

Verdict: We Are Onyx December Beauty Box had an estimated retail value of nearly $62.00.  Double the cost of the monthly subscription, this is a fantastic deal.  With that being said, this was probably one of the most difficult reviews I’ve ever written.  Over half of the value was in one product, that didn’t work for my skin tone, and everything else is from a line that’s never been on my wish list due to a large amount of ingredients I try to avoid.  These are just my opinions, I hope that if you are comfortable enough to share any positive points from products you received in your Onyx box, that you share them with us below.

What are your thoughts on We Are Onyx this month?

  1. Sometimes you get a disappointing box that, for whatever reason doesn’t work for you. I completely understand avoiding certain ingredients in beauty products and I will not use products with sulfates in my hair either. I think you gave a fair and honest review and you in no way bashed these products or the subscription box. I for one appreciate your honesty and I think that as long as you’re respectful (which you very much were) that you’re entitled to your opinion like everyone else. I also appreciate you asking for any positive comments as well. I always look forward to reading your reviews, Celicia, even if I’m not the target demographic for the boxes, because I appreciate your voice, humor, and respectful and honest opinions. Thanks for this one too.

  2. I absolutly love face color products like foundation, concealer or cc creams, but its just so risky putting them in sub boxes, as they only work for some. I have yet to receive a face color item that works for me. I have been wanting to try the cargo cc cream for awhile, it looks like the color might be difficult to match though. Thanks for the honest review.

  3. I’m not the target audience for this box, but I just wanted to say that I appreciate how you include “These are just my opinions, I hope that if you are comfortable enough to share any positive points […]” at the bottom of your review. It’s a very inclusive thing to say, and I know that some people feel like they can’t talk about things they like. So thank you for that!

    • I agree wholeheartedly, great review! 🙂
