UniversalYums-January-2016-Card

Universal Yums includes a booklet that lists all of the items in the box.

The booklet includes trivia, fables, a recipe, and other fun Turkish info.

They also detail the ingredients of each item on their website.

UniversalYums-January-2016-Biskrem

Biskrem Duo Biscuits (185 g.)

The first item in this month’s Universal Yums box is a bag of Biskrem Duo Biscuits. These crispy chocolate & vanilla biscuits are stuffed with fudge filling, and they’re really yummy.

Ulker Pizza Sticks (60 g.)

I’ve received quite a few savory cracker sticks in past boxes from Universal Yums, which leads me to think that they’re fairly popular worldwide. The rest of the world is definitely on to something. (Listen up, US snack companies!) These sticks are pizza flavored, and, while I can’t say they remind me of pizza, there’s definitely a savory, herby flavor that’s vaguely reminiscent of Italian cuisine.

UniversalYums-January-2016-NutyMax

NutyMax Hazelnut Cream (44 g.)

80% of the world’s hazelnuts are from Turkey, so it’s no surprise that one of their popular candies is a hazelnut chocolate bar! I really enjoyed this treat. The chocolate was creamy and smooth, and I liked the crunchiness and flavor of the hazelnuts.

Turtacik Cinnamon Orange Jelly Cookie

I wasn’t sure what I’d think of these cinnamon orange cookies (orange and cinnamon isn’t a combination that pops up very often), but they absolutely blew me away. The orange jelly is a little chewy and a nice contrast to the crumbly cookie underneath. Hands down, this was my favorite snack in the box!

UniversalYums-January-2016-Hazerbaba

Hazerbaba Assorted Turkish Delight with Rose Petals (3.5 oz.)

I first tried Turkish delight when I was a kid, and I loved it from the very first bite. (After reading about it in The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, I had to get my hands on some!) Rose is my favorite, but I’ve never met a flavor I didn’t like. Based on the way the booklet is written, it sounds like subscribers will receive one of several different flavors.

Grape Sujuk (3.17 oz.)

Goodness, I wasn’t expecting to pull this out of the box! I’ve never seen anything like it before. Here’s a closeup:

UniversalYums-January-2016-Sujuk

(No joke, when I was holding it up to read the label, one of my dogs ran over thinking it was a dog treat!) Sujuk is made from grapes, molasses, and walnuts, and it was interesting to try the jellied snack. Frankly, I didn’t love it, but it was certainly fun to try!

UniversalYums-January-2016-Ulker

Cokofest Chocolate with Pistachio (75 g.)

Pistachios are one of the foods that Turkey is best known for. According to Universal Yums, they’re smaller than the ones grown in California, but they’re intensely flavorful. They’re delicious in this pistachio-filled milk chocolate bar. The filling is a mix of pistachio pieces and pistachio cream, and it’s seriously delicious.

Ulker Banana Wafers (42 g.)

Banana is a flavor that doesn’t often pop up in US snacks, but I’m a big fan. These wafer cookies are layered with a banana filling, and I like them a lot.

UniversalYums-January-2016-Koska

Koska Susam Krokan (40 g.)

Krokan is a Turkish brittle made from real sugar and sesame seeds. Universal Yums recommends it for halva lovers. (Though, I think I might like this even more than halva!)

Albeni Biscuit (40 g.)

This chocolate, caramel, and biscuit snack reminds me of a Twix bar. Fun fact: the company that makes Albeni bars also makes Godiva.

Dankek 8 Orange Cake

“Kek,” or cake, is a popular Turkish snack. It comes with a variety of fillings, but this cake is filled with orange. I love the combination of chocolate & orange, but this cake wasn’t for me.

UniversalYums-January-2016-Falim

Toffix Fruit Chews (4 candies)

These fruity chews are made with real fruit juice, and I found them to be utterly addictive! They come in cherry, grape, strawberry, orange, apple, watermelon, and “tropical” and are filled with a liquid center.

Falim Mastic Gum (4 pieces)

This sugar-free gum is made using the resin of the mastic tree, and it’s unlike anything I’ve ever tried before. I made the mistake of popping one of these into my mouth before reading the description in the Universal Yums booklet, and I was very surprised to discover that it’s not sweet at all! The mastic resin provides a flavor that lasts for hours, and Falim gum is approved by both dentists and doctors, alike. (It can prevent ulcers, lower cholesterol, prevent tooth decay, and ward off gingivitis!)

UniversalYums-January-2016-Next

On the back of the information card, Universal Yums provides a clue to the next month’s destination. What do you think about the clue? It sounds like France to me!

Verdict: This box from Universal Yums was a lot of fun. I don’t have a lot of experience with Turkish snacks, so nearly all of the treats in this box were a new discovery for me. I enjoyed sampling all of them, but my favorites were definitely the banana wafers, cinnamon orange cookies, and the Turkish delight. I think Universal Yums does a great job of curating treats from a different country each month, and I have so much fun discovering new foods from around the world. I’m looking forward to next month’s box- fingers crossed that France will be the featured country! What a perfect pick for a Valentine’s Day box!

I loved everything except the gum and while the grape thing was intimidating, it wasn’t awful. In fact, it was quite interesting but i will not be searching for more of it to purchase. To be honest, I really thought that I wasn’t going to like the Turkey box very much, however, everything else was amazing! After not liking the chocolate covered Turkish Delight in the UK box, I was very nervous about the Turkish Delight that was in the Turkey box. The variety sampler box was the one that I got and the first two pieces were Pistachio flavored and it was so delicious, the rest of the flavors were okay but it just was something about the white powder on the outside and the pistachios on the inside…. Best month yet!!!!

UY hits it out of the park once again! Great box, lots of fun new things to try! I get the large box and I gift the smaller one to my dad all year. It is the best food box out there and they are so nice and interactive w/ their customers. The grape thing was weird, not bad, just different,
but so much fun to try. I cannot name my fav yet..still tasting! Love UY!

Can anyone on here share their experience with the smaller mini yum box? I’d like to know if there is a really big difference in what they are sending out. I am on the fence about which size to go with.
Thanks!

I’ve been getting the smaller box for several months now and I find it to be just the right size. This month, I got 7 items (one being the collection of fruit candies and gums, so more than 7 pieces total). We’re pretty good at rationing so the box usually lasts us a week or two.

This was our family’s 2nd box (the first was the UK in December).
We love adventurous food, but most of the things in here weren’t very spectacular, in our opinion. My husband loved the pizza sticks. I think that was my favorite, as well. We threw out a few things that just weren’t worth finishing.

We eagerly look forward to France…

They’re getting better and better with those booklets. I’ve started doing homeschool unit studies around the boxes, and my daughter is LOVING it. We even made the recipe they included.

We tried so hard to find some of these things to order more. Does anyone have any suggestions, particularly for the little orange and chocolate cakes? I’ve been trying to hunt down the Chili Mili snacks from the India box, too.

I signed up on New Year’s and this was my first box – LOVED it! The gum was definitely…odd….but, the rest were super yummy. I especially fell in love with the Turkish Delight, orange cinnamon cookies and the pistachio chocolate bar. Well worth the $25 for me as I would never get to try this sort of stuff otherwise.

I liked everything in this box except the gum which had a weird taste for me. Did you notice that the Grape Sujuk says “Aphrodisiac” on the wrapper? I didn’t even try it– this was the only item this month that I gave away.

I’ve only gotten this box once (Mexico, June 2015) and didn’t like it in part because I live in a heavily Mexican-populated region and could buy 1/2 the treats included at my local stores for less money. However, based on the clue for next month and hoping like you that it’s France, I ordered the Feb box. I’m in love with any and all things French, so I’m eager to get the box. 🙂

Wow, I used to live in Turkey, and I have to say, they did a great job with curating the snacks! I would eat most of these on a pretty regular basis (especially those orange cookies, and the fudge filled ones). This post filled me with nostalgia!

I agree completely, wonderful curation. I lived in Turkey in 1996-1998 and loved my time there including fantastic cuisine. It’s harder to find true Turkish sweets (at least it used to be) since they import a ton of candy from Germany and Belgium. I’m happy they didn’t go with box filled with variations of Turkish baklava.

Do they ever offer a discount code ??

Wondering the same. This looks like a fun box, but it seems really pricey to me.

They had one around Christmas, but hopefully they’ll have a new one before next Christmas!
