A few times a year, ModCloth launches their “Stylish Surprise” – mystery items at a deep discount (you get to pick the category and size).

Here were the categories and prices this time:

MODCLOTH STYLISH SURPRISE JAN 2016 - info

FYI – this is completely sold out, but make sure to sign up for notifications at the end of this post to get an email alert the next time the Stylish Surprise is available!

MODCLOTH STYLISH SURPRISE JAN2016 - packaging

MODCLOTH STYLISH SURPRISE JAN2016 - all items

I got one Apparel Surprise, one Dress Surprise, and one Shoes Surprise.

MODCLOTH STYLISH SURPRISE JAN2016 - items 1

Birkenstock Madrid Sandals – value: $70

I like Birkenstock sandals, but I prefer a little more to them than just the one-strap slip-on style. Still, I’m impressed with the value and the brand recognition for $10!

MODCLOTH STYLISH SURPRISE JAN2016 - items 2

Pink Owl Bird Print Tunic – value: $50?

(100% polyester)

I adore this top! The print reminds of Deux Lux’s Anguilla pattern. It’s such a flattering style and easy to wear! I also don’t have much green in my wardrobe, so I’m really happy to have this. I am super happy with this, especially for $15. I would have paid more.

MODCLOTH STYLISH SURPRISE JAN2016 - items 3

Marina Pink Lace Dress – value: $130 (originally, but I’ve found it on sale online for $70ish)

(Lace 55% nylon and 45% cotton; lining 100% polyester)

When I pulled this out of the box and saw the lace, I thought “wow, this must be super 80s” but once I saw the style of the dress, I was in love. Seriously, how pretty is this? I love the sweetheart faux neckline and the blush color is so romantic. It’s a little dressier than I really have many opportunities for, but I can definitely see this for weddings in the spring and summer. For $20, I’m thrilled.

(FYI – in the photo, I should have straightened out the lining. I didn’t notice the crease under the bust, which kind of makes it look like a bandeau – which would still have been a cool detail if it were that way! I just wanted to clarify so there was no confusion.)

The Verdict: I honestly can’t believe how happy I am with my surprises. Even though I don’t think I’ll wear the shoes, I’m still impressed with the brand/value. And I’m just downright thrilled with the top and dress! I’m also a little surprised the clothing fits me so well since my past experience with ModCloth clothing has been hit or miss with sizing (especially in the hips and bust). My first ever ModCloth Stylish Surprise was a few years ago and I don’t remember if I got a dress or apparel, but I remember it being something that was totally not my style, so I wasn’t expecting such a great turnout for this time around, if I’m being honest. For $45 (+4 shipping) I’m beyond satisfied with the value.

How soon are we notified when the surprise is happening? Is it the day of? Do we know when they may have another one? I really want to be a part of this! Sounds so fun and such a great deal!

I was disappointed with my shoe surprise. They were poorly made sling back nude pumps. Not to say that someone else may not have liked them. Some might consider them a staple shoe…its just when I saw the review and saw silver Birkenstock’s as another pair that were received…It let me down! Not sure I would buy this again.

I got a beautiful Put A Ring On It Bettie Page dress, but I am too short for it! I would love to put it up for swaps, but I am on the waitlist. 🙁

Put the shoes up for swap or sale!! I have seen several pairs of birkenstocks and my fingers are crossed that I get some in mine!!

I was so tempted to do this, but my fear was that I would end up with that pink dress you’re wearing. You are simply adorable in it, and I would look like a 6ft tall 42 year old trying to play dress up. It is so not my style, and even with the cheap prices I would feel like it was such a waste of money. I’ve ordered one shirt from Modcloth, and even though I love their style, I don’t know that I’ll order again. It fits ok, but it’s tight in the arms/upper back. It wasn’t worth the money to send back and it IS wearable, so I kept it because I really like the print.

I swore I would never order a Stylish Surprise again because what I received last year was unwearable, but I was suckered in again! Lol. This time I received a super bright pair of orange pumps that were used! The soles were dirty and scuffed. They had totally been worn (not just tried on). I emailed Modcloth about it, and they gave me the $10 I spent on them as store credit. While I appreciate that, they should not have sent me used shoes to begin with. Last year they sent me a used dress that had snags and serious pilling on it. They should not be sending out used/returned times. The other item I received this time was a dainty little floral stappy high/low top. It’s cute, and I will wear it, but don’t know that it was worth the $15. While I still love Modcloth, I don’t think I will go for the Stylish Surprise again…I don’t have the good luck with it that Haley had! 🙂

I received the two most beautiful dresses ever!!! I was so happy this time around. I missed the shoe opportunity… 9 1/2 size shoes sell out super fast…. I love the sandals reviewed! I would have been so stoked. I will keep my eyes open for the next one. These boxes are wonderful!

I’ve considered ordering but there’s such inconsistency with the reviews so I haven’t bien the bullet. That said, all the clothes recurved by Haley look wonderful on her! I’m not sure I could have pulled off the dress but we all have such different shapes and coloring. I may try the shoes next.

I ordered for the first time and got 3 apparel and 4 shoes. I love clothes and shoes and I feel the quality of the items I received were low. Except for a few nice brands mixed in I think most of their stuff is “fast fashion”. That being said, I only paid $10 and $15, so at that price I didn’t mind. I do not however consider it a “steal”. 3 out of 4 pairs of shoes fit. All pairs of shoes were off-brand “Payless” quality. One pair, blue flats, was too small and had a small stain which Modcloth customer service gave me a $10 store credit for. One pair, and orangey coral maryjane heel, although cheaply made I love and wore yesterday although my feet were a little sore by the end of the day. Based on this I am trying to sell the other pair I got which was similar, a brown lace up heel, and same maker but I do like them and would wear them if I cant sell. The last pair is a flat balck sandal that I do like but they are a little generic so I will try to sell. The 3 apparel items all seemed lower end also. A skirt which was too small and also not my style I will sell. A strappy red top and a strappy floral top both are cute and I am going to see if I can make work, at first glance I don’t wear red or florals but after trying on a couple times I think I can style them. Overall not bad, spent $85 and only 1 shoe and 1 apparel absolutely don’t work for me.

Great stuff Haley! Unfortunately I missed out on the shoes (it seems like they sold out super quickly) and the three apparel items I received were not worth the $15 I spent on each (i.e. thin tank tops). I’m not sure I’ll take the chance again as I could have gotten a top I love for the $50 I spent on this.

I got a blue bod con dress that was labeled as a large but there was no way it was actually a large. I had my size 6 mom try it in and it was also super tight on her. I knew it was a possibility I would get something that didn’t fit with mod cloth’s sizing inconsistencies.

Some of their clothes are UK sizes. I don’t know if that is or not. But a UK large is about USA size 4-6.

I ordered 5 pairs of the ‘shoe surprise’, and I LOVED every pair! It was 3 pairs of sandals and 2 pairs of flats, both my go-to styles of shoes! Super happy with that!

Man, all the shoes/clothes/apparel I’ve gotten in previous Stylish Surprises hasn’t been nearly as great as what you’ve gotten. I tried selling to a consignment store and they wouldn’t take them. Maybe it’s that I get a size small so that’s why they send me junior’s items, or it’s just the luck of the draw?

My first and last “surprise” was a forest green velvet dress that I couldn’t even describe if I tried. It was something else. Fortunately, the swap site enabled me to find it a home.

I think a lot of it is luck, honestly. I was shocked I got 2 clothing pieces I loved this much, especially since I only bought one of each category. Like I said in the verdict, I bought either a dress or apparel a couple years ago and was supremely disappointed. It’s a “surprise” for a reason – I don’t think there’s ever a way to know what you’ll really get. =\

You’re not alone. I received two of the exact same dress (one peach, one mint green) of the “junior prom” variety. Ugh.

We got four dresses, four apparels, and four shoes. There are five girls in this house, so we figure there’s usually something for everyone in these! We really liked the items we got. I think my favorite was this white maxi dress with big, bright tropical flowers on it. My girls like the Star Trek t-shirt the best. I miss the old prices, but these deals are still a steal. 😀

You look so lovely in that dress! You got lucky with good surprises!
