Mantry Subscription Box Review + Coupon December 2015 - Card

This month’s theme is “Little Italy.” (From the front of the pamphlet, I thought the theme might relate to food delivery. I guess the emojis make me think of ordering food online!)

Mantry Subscription Box Review + Coupon December 2015 - FoldOut1

Each box comes with a fold out card detailing the producers behind the food included and where in the country they’re based.

Mantry Subscription Box Review + Coupon December 2015 - Curator

This box also includes a note from Mantry’s curator.

Mantry Subscription Box Review + Coupon December 2015 - Jerky

Bourbon Barrel Smoked Pepper Steak Cuts- $9?

Dried meats are regularly included in Mantry boxes. (Jerky is featured nearly every month.) This month’s meaty pick is air-dried steak cuts flavored with bourbon barrel smoked pepper. I can’t find it for sale online, so I’ve estimated the retail value.

Mantry Subscription Box Review + Coupon December 2015 - HotSauce

A&B Hot Pepper Sauce- $12

For some reason, I don’t use a lot of hot sauce at home. I really like it, but it’s something that I never really think to use unless it’s sitting in front of me. I like that A&B has a full list of recipes on their site. The recipe for Blue Cheese Sweet Potatoes, in particular, looks fantastic.

Mantry Subscription Box Review + Coupon December 2015 - Chickpeas

Watusee Foods Rosemary Chickpeatos- $4

Mantry is really great at utilizing snack foods and condiments in tasty recipes. For these crispy chickpeas, they recommend tossing them into a salad. I think that’s a great (and surprising) way to incorporate them into a meal.

Mantry Subscription Box Review + Coupon December 2015 - OliveOil

O Roasted Garlic Olive Oil- $14

I love receiving olive oil in subscription boxes! It’s something I use every single day and something that I always seem to need more of. I especially love trying new flavored olive oils, so this item is a major win for me. Mantry recommends using it to make Roasted Garlic and Mushroom Pappardelle. Don’t mind if I do!

Mantry Subscription Box Review + Coupon December 2015 - Pasta

Community Grains Hard Amber Durum Pappardelle- $4.99

Pasta is another item I’m always glad to see in a subscription box. I eat pasta regularly, but it’s something I’m always hesitant to splurge on. It feels like such a treat to receive a gourmet brand like this, and I’m curious to see if the hard amber durum wheat adds an interesting depth of flavor.

Mantry Subscription Box Review + Coupon December 2015 - Seasoning

Greenpoint Trading Company T Bone Steak Seasoning- $9

This is a big bag of seasoning! It’s a mix of sea salt, garlic, black pepper, coriander, crushed red pepper, dill, and caraway and can be used to season steak, chicken, fish, and eggs.

Mantry Subscription Box Review + Coupon December 2015 - Gloves

Glove.ly Classic Winter Touchscreen Gloves- $19.99

About once every quarter, Mantry adds a special item for everyone who’s been subscribing for longer than six months, and this box includes a pair of tech gloves! I think this is a great special addition for winter, and the gloves are stretchy enough that they fit both my husband and me very well.

Mantry Subscription Box Review + Coupon December 2015 - GlovesOn

Here’s a snap of me wearing them. (Please forgive my attempt at hand modeling!)

Verdict: Mantry does a great job curating products around a theme. Their presentation is excellent, and I love their signature wooden crates. I enjoyed this month’s box a lot, and I really like the special bonus item for longterm subscribers. In terms of value (not counting the gloves), the items in this month’s box likely total around $50, which is on the low side of what I expect from Mantry. I can’t recommend this subscription for anyone looking for a box where the retail value of the items included meets or exceeds the cost of the box, but I do think their curation is exceptional.

Normally I love Mantry, and think they put an amount of effort into the curation and presentation that other similar subscription services do not, and I loved getting the gloves, but this box kinda fell flat for me. Other than the pasta and the olive oil, nothing resonated as Italian to me. These seemed like safe choices, I prefer when they include more “out there” or obscure things. Also, I’m not a big fan of jerky. I really liked last month’s box better.

I finding it really interested how Mantry’s value is consistently less than the price (and not by a few bucks either; by $10-25 less lol) yet this company is still in business. Really interesting.
