Hamptons-January-2016-Booklet

This month’s theme is Power Bowl. The box includes ingredients, tools, and recipes to help you make a variety of different “power bowls” packed with fresh veggies, ancient grains, and proteins. I think this is a fun and creative way to help jumpstart healthy eating- perfect for January!

Hamptons-January-2016-Info1

The booklet details all of the items included in the box.

Hamptons-January-2016-Info2

It also provides recipes and cooking tips.

Hamptons-January-2016-Sauce

Lucky Dog Medium Lightly Smoked Pepper Sauce- $6.99

The first item in this month’s box is Lucky Dog’s Dia Del Perro, “an alderwood-smoked serrano pepper sauce with green tomatillo, toasted onion, roasted garlic and chile tepin.” Lucky Dog recommends using it on Mexican food as an alternative to verde-style hot sauces, and warns that the heat starts out mild but intensifies a little as you eat. A number of the power bowl recipes provided by Hamptons Lane suggest using this sauce as a dressing- either straight or mixed with lime juice. I’ve never thought to use hot sauce as a dressing, but I think it’s a great way to add flavor to salads and bowls without piling on extra calories!

Hamptons-January-2016-Container

1.1 Liter Airtight Container from Onyx- $22

When Hamptons Lane released the spoilers for this box, I wasn’t sure how I’d like this container. Now that I have it in my hands, though, I’m very pleased.

Hamptons-January-2016-Container2

It’s extremely well made, and I feel confident that I can toss it directly into my tote without fear that the contents will leak out. It’s also the best looking lunch container I think I’ve ever seen!

Hamptons-January-2016-Dressing

Evriholder Salad Dressing Container- $8.98

I think it’s great that Hamptons Lane included a separate container for transporting salad dressing. It’s made from bpa-free silicone, is topped with a leak-proof flip top cap, and holds a generous 2 ounces. My only worry is that the shape will make it a little difficult to clean. I think I might try getting into the habit of cleaning it at work, just to make sure the dressing doesn’t have a chance to dry into the corners.

Hamptons-January-2016-Rice

North Bay Trading Company Minnesota Grown Wild Rice (8 oz.)- $3.50

Wild rice is higher in protein than other white rices and grains, and this varietal from Michigan is both nutritious and delicious. It still contains its nutrient-rich outer hull (which is often removed to speed up the cooking time), so it needs to be boiled for 40-45 minutes. Honestly, I don’t mind that it takes longer to cook; I’ll just plan ahead and make my rice the night before I want to use it in a power bowl.

Hamptons-January-2016-Farro

Organic Farro from Nuts.com (8 oz.)- $3

Farro is an ancient grain that has been traced back to the Roman Legions and found in Egyptian tombs. It has a nutty taste that’s similar to barley and a firm texture that holds up well- even if it sits for awhile after cooking. (Perfect for a make-in-advance lunch!) This pearled version is one of the fastest cooking varieties available and is rich in protein (4 grams per serving!), fiber, iron, magnesium, and vitamin B.

Hamptons-January-2016-Rub1

Chile Margarita Rub from Spiceologist (2 oz.)- $4.21

This Chile Margarita Rub is a blend of ancho peppers, Aleppo chile, orange peel, and lime peel.

Hamptons-January-2016-Rub2

It can be used to add a bright flavor to chicken, fish, shrimp, and veggies.

Hamptons-January-2016-Recipes1

Hamptons Lane always includes a number of recipes to accompany the items they send, and this month they’ve outdone themselves by providing 30!

Hamptons-January-2016-Recipes2

All 30 recipes are available on their website. That’s enough to have a different power bowl every day for an entire month!

Verdict: Hamptons Lane does a great job curating boxes around a theme, and this box will definitely help me follow through with my new year’s resolution to start eating better. I sometimes find it hard to get excited about eating healthy, but I can’t wait to try out some of the “power bowl” recipes featured on the Hamptons Lane website. (And I’m excited to pack lunches in my new Onyx container. It’s so good looking!) Based on the prices I found online, the items included this month total about $48 retail, which is only slightly more than the cost of the box. I usually expect to see a higher value from Hamptons Lane, but I’m still happy with this box. I love the curation, and I’ll use every single item they included.

Got my husband this sub for Christmas. We are loving it. The Chile Margarita rub is amazing. We have used it on shrimp and made the homemade tortillas from the Taco Party box. They came out awesome. Looking forward to the Feb. box. Hoping it has chocolate for Valentine’s day!

I do not usually get excited about salads and prefer a warm lunch, but am loving my power bowl salads this week!
Made the farro, but did not see cooking instructions in the booklet. Decided to just put it in the rice cooker & don’t think it came out right, but I’m enjoying it anyway.
The recipes this month sound great.
