Chococurb is an artisan chocolate box. They have two subscription 'sizes' so to speak: their mini, which is what I am reviewing today, and their regular subscription. Their mini box is new, and they promise three chocolate products per month. They also have a shop, so you can repurchase the chocolates that you love!
Dolcetta - Dark Chocolate and Rosemary Caramel Bar - $5.50
This chocolate bar had a really cool package. All of these would be great for gifting to a fellow chocolate lover! This bar is dark chocolate filled with rosemary caramel, and it's my favorite out of the three - mostly because of the caramel. The rosemary flavor is very light, so if you're afraid of herby qualities to your sweets, this may be a good introduction bar for you! The caramel was not gooey, so it didn't gush and make a mess, it was a thin layer that added a sweet, chewy layer to the dark chocolate. All in all, it was amazing.
Woodblock Chocolate - Salt & Nibs - $4.00
This chocolate is sourced, roasted, cracked, winnowed, conched, & aged in Portland, Oregon. When I broke off my first piece and put it in my mouth, I thought it looked somewhat like a Crunch bar underneath - but a very fancy Crunch bar. The salt and nibs are crushed and added to the bar in a manner in which they stand out - I love that! It added a very nice texture to the final product that I enjoyed greatly! The first taste I got was salt, which I love - if you salt my baked goods - we are friends for life! Then I started getting the other flavors, and let me tell you, this is an amazing chocolate bar. Yes, I would pay $4.00 for this chocolate bar - I really appreciate good chocolate and this is good chocolate!
Dick Taylor Craft Chocolate - Maple Coconut - $8.50
First of all, this chocolate bar came packaged in the coolest package I've ever had candy come in. It's a very high quality paper envelope, embossed and etched with an illustration - this would be awesome chocolate to gift. The top of the chocolate bar was embossed with a gorgeous design, and the back of it was sprinkled with coconut. It is 72% Belize chocolate (fun fact: I'm married to a Belizean, so this excited me!) so it is definitely on the darker side of the chocolate scale. I was nervous about this one, since I don't like coconut in most things. After trying it, I realized there wasn't anything to be nervous about - it was delicious, and I barely tasted the coconut. If you love coconut and are expecting a strong flavor of it - this is not the bar for you. If you just love smooth dark chocolate - this is definitely the bar for you! It was amazingly smooth for dark chocolate and had a definite sweet flavor that wasn't too strong.
Verdict: I really enjoyed this shipment of Chococurb Mini. All of the bars were excellent, and the value came out to $18.00. Yes, that is a little lower than the box cost, but I think you have to go into this box knowing that they're sending you super high quality chocolate and some times the value will be lower than other times.
There is something really cool about knowing that your chocolate was made by an individual artisan - when we went to Europe last year, I made it a point to go to the Lindt Chocolate Museum in Cologne, because I love chocolate and they give you free chocolate (Not a ton, but there's an awesome chocolate fountain - highly recommend going if you're ever there!). Who could pass up a few hours dedicated to chocolate? Going to this museum really opened my eyes to the process, the time, and the dedication involved with chocolate making. For a large corporation - it isn't that big of a deal - for an individual artisan - they have a passion that I respect! Chocolate making is hard work, and it is not something that everyone can do. It is an expensive process!
With all of that said, I loved my Chococurb Mini box and I think it would be an awesome gift for Valentine's Day for any chocolate lover!
Have you tried Chococurb yet? What did you think of January's Mini box?
