BarkBox is a subscription box for dogs. It’s the most popular dog subscription box. You’ve seen the small dog version, but since they customize based on dog size, we thought you might like to see what you’d get if you have a large dog, so this is a review of the “Big & Bold” box for a 50+ pound dog. (My dog, Nyx, is a Rottweiler who currently weighs about 83 pounds.)
My Subscription Addiction pays for this subscription. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)
The Subscription Box: BarkBox
The Cost: $29 per month on a month-to-month plan, save with longer subscriptions!
The Products: Toys, treats, and grooming products selected for your dog based on size (choose “Small and Cute” for 0-20 pounds, “Just Right” for 20-50 pounds, and “Big & Bold” for dogs 50+ pounds).

Good to Know: BarkBox offers a heavy chewer option. After you sign up, you can email them to request this. This box is supposedly the heavy chewer option.

The theme this month was a nod to the “peace and love” hippie culture!
Rockstar Guitar (Large) – Value $12
This was a heavy canvas toy with no stuffing. Naturally Nyx found several weak points, but at least it took her longer than usual.
Etta Says Elk Chew – Value $3
This is made from elk, which is definitely a protein Nyx has never had before. She had a bit of tummy trouble last week, but as soon as I am sure she is over it, I am going to let her have this. (Her IBD is a reaction to some protein she’s had in the past, we’re just not sure which one. But “novel” proteins are expected to be OK.)
Denim Jeans Toy (Large) – Value $12
These had some heavy crinkle paper instead of stuffing. The weak points in these were the seams at the waist and ankles. But Nyx sure did have a good time trying to find the weak points!
Ziggy’s Disco Fries Treats – Value $9
These are custom-packaged for BarkBox. They’re supposed to be sweet potato and cheese flavor but I notice that ground peas, chickpea flour, flaxseed, and tapioca starch are higher on the ingredients list.
Peas and Ruv Dog Treats – Value $9
These are from Max & Ruffy’s, a brand I’ve been seeing more and more often in dog subscription boxes. They make all their treats in the USA, source ingredients from organic suppliers, and never include wheat, corn, or soy (common dog allergens). I am not sure why the BarkBox shop shows them as bone-shaped because the ones I received are circular disks (suitable for a medium or large dog).
I just liked the look on Nyx’s face here.
That wet part? All dog saliva. Ewww.
Verdict: I calculated a value of $45 for the January 2016 BarkBox (large dog version). This is higher than the cost of the subscription but does include some exclusive items where the price can be anything BarkBox says because you can’t compare prices elsewhere. Nyx loved the toys and I’m excited to actually be able to give her the elk chew, so this was a win for us.
What do you think of the January 2016 BarkBox dog subscription box? Do you subscribe to any dog or cat boxes?
