Trunk Club Review #2 Women's Clothing Subscription Service - - BOX

Trunk Club is a stylist box owned by Nordstrom, and it’s similar to Stitch Fix. (It’s not a monthly subscription though – you can schedule your boxes as frequently as you like). Up until recently they only styled for men, but they’ve opened it up for women as well! They have a waitlist right now, but they’re slowly opening it up for women to try.

Unlike Stitch Fix (the women’s stylist service), there is no upfront stylist fee. You sign up and you get a call from your stylist. Personally, I didn’t love this part because 1) phone calls are something I totally didn’t realize would become so difficult with a newborn! My goodness, you have to time them just right and hope baby sleeps the whole conversation, and 2) I really prefer to do everything online since talking on the phone gives me a little anxiety! Plus, digitally is just easier to me. However, my stylist Emily Lytle was really sweet and made everything really comfortable so it wasn’t bad.

I let my stylist know what kind of clothing I was looking for as well as the brand/size of some of my favorite, best-fitting pieces of clothing I already own.

She then sent me a link with the items she had picked out for me and I had 24 hours to reject any item I definitely didn’t want for her to replace with something else, and then the rest would ship.

And then the Trunk Club box arrived a day or two later via FedEx!

Polka Dot Popover Top (Madewell) – Cost to Keep: $79.50

I like the way this top looks in the photo, but when I had it on I wasn’t a fan. It felt too boxy and, although it had a nice button-down detail, it doesn’t go down far enough for me to be able to nurse my son easily. I like the color a lot, though.

‘Hidden Hills’ Straight Leg Stretch Jeans Fountain (Paige Denim) – Cost to Keep: $169

These jeans are nice. The material feels a little thin, but they look good and have some flattering stretch to them.

Peasant Blouse (Sandra) – Cost to Keep: $69

Unfortunately, this blouse is not my style at all. I don’t care for the “boho,” flowy, crochet-detail kinds of tops.

Sleeveless Cowl Neck Tunic (Halogen) – Cost to Keep: $78

This tunic is very soft – it felt like a long (sleeveless) sweater. I like the style (especially paired with leggings), but I’m not sure how I’d wear it. It’s a warmer design so I’d want to wear it in the cooler months, but I don’t think I could wear a sweater over top of this. I also didn’t want any high-necked items in my trunks.

Faux Leather Skinny Pants (BLANKNYC) – Cost to Keep: $98

I like the way these look, but (like last time’s faux-leather leggings), they really don’t fit right. I got them on, and I like the length okay, but the rise was way too low and the waistband was too tight to be flattering.

Side Zip Long V-Neck Cardigan (Halogen) – Cost to Keep: $78

In my last trunk, I had a cardigan almost identical to this one. I loved it, and almost bought it, but after having it on for a couple minutes, I realized that I didn’t like how the thick material wore (it seemed like it was stretching out and also wrinkling easily), and I thought it’d be hard to clean. I mentioned this when giving feedback to my stylist last time, so I thought it was funny she sent me an almost identical cardigan with a different material! This one is a thinner knit and is really comfy. I love it! (It also has a zipper detail on the sides by the hips – sorry I forgot to grab a photo of that, but you can see it if you click through the item’s link!)

Two-Tone Wool Blend Cape (MICHAEL Michael Kors) – Cost to Keep: $198

I do have to give my stylist and Trunk Club credit for opening my eyes to capes. I never thought I’d like them, but this trunk and my last one both contained capes I actually like!  This one is a thick wool blend and very warm – and it looks so chic! Unfortunately, the price is quite high for something I don’t really think I’d wear all that much (especially here in Michigan when it gets so cold and blustery).

‘Leila’ Ankle Bootie (TOMS) – Cost to Keep: $138.95 (currently on sale for $104.21)

How cute are these booties? The leather was really buttery soft and the heel is a nice height. However, I thought I was lucky with my feet not changing sizes at all during pregnancy but here I am, 3 months post-partum, and my feet feel like they grew overnight! So these didn’t fit, unfortunately. They’re really cute, though!

Verdict: This was my second experience with Trunk Club Women. To be honest, I didn’t enjoy this one as much as my first. With my first box, a lot of things just really weren’t my style, but that’s to be expected with the first box from a styling service. However, after thorough feedback and a second phone call with my stylist I thought things would be more what I was looking for than they were here, especially since there were some specific things I asked to see and didn’t. Also, the last trunk I had 15 items, and, this time, I only have 8. There’s not a set number of items advertised to be sent in each trunk (or a set value bracket – my trunk last time was worth over $1,400 in total, and this one adds up to $908.45), but it was still a little surprising to open up and find half the number of items I received in my first trunk (they send you a link to preview the items before they send your trunk and I initially thought there was an issue with my webpage not loading because of how few items there were compared to last time). I also didn’t really feel like my stylist was enthusiastic or made me excited about getting my second trunk.

I did have a little sticker shock with some of the items, but everything is from Nordstrom so that’s a little expected, too. Plus, the higher price tags definitely correlate with the high quality of every item!

Ultimately, there are a lot of great things about this service to keep in mind, as well: the thoroughness of the feedback and customer service, the fact that to return the box all you have to do is click a button to schedule a FedEx pick-up, there’s no cost to this experience since you only pay for what you keep and there’s no styling fee, and it is overall a high-end styling service.

I used this service after watching a couple of youtube unboxings. I was totally disappointed. Sticker shock at prices definitely but I didn’t get quality. Tags were missing from items. Clothes coming unstitched or had obvisously been worn due to make-up stains and spots on the jeans. Micheal kors handbag wasn’t in the box but it was on my items price list in the box. They even charged me for it after i notified stylist it wasn’t in my trunk. The jeans and purse would’ve been the only things I kept too. I got my money back but haven’t heard from stylist since may. Check out youtube. Trunk club is definitely getting it wrong for us ladies!

I tried this box as well and it was a complete miss on my style. I asked for classic pieces, timeless staples, and wardrobe essentials a la Kate Middleton. I got some weird retro-80-90s goth-punky vibe. I returned the entire box without keeping anything.

Did you receive a 2nd box after returning the 1st (without any purchases)?

Haley, if you like the pattern of the Polka Dot Popover Top, you can get a cheaper one from Express. It’s full button-down and $20-30 cheaper. Plus, Express always has a sale so you can probably get it 50% off before the holiday season ends.

I just don’t think the “stylist” picked things that flatter you. Other, less expensive services where they don’t make you call them have sent you things that look much nicer on you and play up your height and other good features well. It is very weird to me.

I signed up for Trunk Club after your 1st review, and although I didn’t keep anything in my 1st trunkI was hopeful. I was extremely disappointed with my 2nd trunk. The items I’m getting are not on point for the styles I requested. My stylist has sent me a lot of shapeless and boxy stuff even though I feel like I’m leaving really good feedback against that style. Also, I requested specific trends – capes, flare jeans and fringe… but haven’t received any of them.

I should add that I am plus size, so maybe she just doesn’t understand my body? With that being said though… I shop at Nordstrom a lot and I never have a hard time finding things I love. I even provided her with the brands and sizes I love that Nordstrom offers…. and have only seen 1 of those brands in my box so far.

I am going to give this service 1 more chance, but after that I give up.

I almost wonder if they gave everyone that signed up at that time the same stylist.

I’ve gotten 2 boxes. I had to tell her no jeans, no dresses 4 times. I gave great feedback, and everything kept getting further and further away from my style. And she re-sent several items in the 2nd box from the first! I literally told her that I chose this service because I really love the Nordstrom house brands. So she sent me nothing from their brands.

I sent back both boxes entirely. Took a survey where I said I wanted a different stylist. I haven’t heard anything since. So I guess Trunk Club dumped me?

It seems they might do so (“dumped you” lol) if you don’t purchase I had that experience after returning my 1st box due to issues similar to yours.

Haley

Colleen – I feel the same…
I had talked to my stylist about how I prefer things that accentuate my waist, how I wanted dresses (I was surprised there weren’t any in my first fix, but I got so many sweaters including 2 that were the same thing just different colors!), things I can nurse in, and that last time’s faux-leather leggings didn’t fit but I got a similar pair that also didn’t fit (I would have at least been understanding were they erring on the side of too big). =\

Yeah, the peasant top seems off compared to everything else. But really everything looked great on you! I guess it’s just a matter of seeing how you feel in each item. And black is totally your color! All of the black clothing looks fantastic with your skin and hair!

Jordan,

Thank you for that! I just cleared out my closet today and realized so much of my wardrobe is black and was worried I needed to cut down on my black clothes. Now I’m going to embrace them! Haha. =] Thanks for reading!

I have gotten two trunk shipments now and overall I like what my stylist has sent me. I also got sticker shock, but then had the same realization as you about the quality of things. My husband has been doing Trunk Club for about a year or so and I feel like the women’s side is still missing something compared to the men’s. I’ve never had the ability to reject anything before it’s sent to me, nor have I been able to set up price points like my husband has. Maybe it’s my stylist? They do earn a commission on what is kept, btw.

You can also request specific items from Nordstrom’s website to be sent to you, and even though I’ve done that twice now, my stylist still hasn’t sent me those items. That’s frustrating.

A lot of the items in this trunk look like they are high quality just from the pictures. The tunic you could wear with a long sleeve top underneath. Mindy Kaling does this a lot on her TV show and it looks really cute. The peasant top would be a definite pass for me especially since were going into the winter months. Love your clothing box reviews!
