Pet Treater is a new subscription box for dogs.  Select from small (up to 20 pounds), medium (21-50 pounds), and large (51+ pounds).  This review is for a large dog box.  My dog Nyx, a Rottweiler, is about 82 pounds right now.

My Subscription Addiction paid for this subscription. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

Pet Treater Subscription Box Review November 2015 - letter

There was no information card in this box, but it did include a letter addressed to Nyx!

Pet Treater Subscription Box Review November 2015 - badger

Petlou Plush Badger – Value $12.99

Nyx loves plush toys.  Granted, she destroys them pretty rapidly.  But she loves them.  The tail was off of this one in about 10 minutes…

Pet Treater Subscription Box Review November 2015 - plastic

Nylabone Advanced Oral Care – Value $12.99

I don’t think I have seen Nylabone products in a dog subscription box before.  I used to buy a ton of things from this brand at PetSmart for Nyx but have had to stay away lately due to her health condition (they have a lot of flavors in them that aggravate her IBD).  I’m sure my parents’ dogs will like this a lot, though!

I (heart) Pet Head Dirty Paws Footbath – Value $8.99

This is a tubular container that you are supposed to fill partway with water (the red part is a removable towel).  You use it to wash your dog’s feet before coming inside.  I like the *idea* of this, but there are two issues: (1) Nyx doesn’t like putting her feet in this and (2) her feet are a little too big to fit in there comfortably.  That being said, if your dog is somewhat smaller, this could work for you.  (Nyx has the bone structure of a much larger dog but has lost a fair amount of muscle mass due to a prescription medication.  She should really weigh 10-12 pounds more than she does and we are going to doggie physical therapy soon to start rebuilding those muscles.)

Pet Treater Subscription Box Review November 2015 - treats

Full Moon Chicken Bacon Treats (12.5 oz) – Value $6.75

These are made in the USA, which is great.  The expiration date was pretty far into the future, as well.  This does not appear to be the manufacturer’s current packaging and the treats in this bag look a little different from the manufacturer’s current photo, however.  I searched Full Moon’s website for a retail location and found that these are sold at Walgreens and Walmart.  While that is great if your dog likes them – you can get more – I am kind of just looking for something more special or unique in a subscription box, than treats you can buy at the drugstore…

Nylabone Happy Time! Chicken – Value $14.22

This is another item that is not part of the manufacturer’s current product line.  It is also made in the USA (yay) and is not expired.  I can’t give it to Nyx because of her IBD, but it must still have some scent left, even through the package, because one of my cats chewed it open!

Pet Treater Subscription Box Review November 2015 - gadgets

Swiss + Tech Dog Leash Light – Value $10.13

This is a 5-LED light that you can attach to your dog’s leash.  It has a hanger part that you can put over a leash (unfortunately won’t fit on Nyx’s leash because large dog = thick, wide leash) and also comes with a sticky pad so you can put it on a retractable leash.  I’ll probably use it as a mini-flashlight around the house.  (It comes with batteries included and, in a test run, it lasted over 90 minutes before I turned it off.)

Style Selections LED Color-Changing Night Light – Value $4.98

This is a really random inclusion for a dog box.  I kind of feel like the Pet Treater people got a good deal from a closeout seller of these and threw them in the boxes to pad the value a bit.

Also good to know: Pet Treater is part of JAMMIN’ BUTTER, the same people behind Peaches & Petals.  (See Haley’s most recent review of Peaches & Petals here.)

Verdict: I calculated a value of about $71 for the November 2015 Pet Treater Dog Subscription Box.  Ordinarily I would be happy with a value that high, but if you look at the product links in this review, many of the items are available only from 3rd party sellers on Amazon.  With the treats, I investigated further and found that was because the items (except the dental treat) had either been discontinued by the manufacturers or else the packaging had been changed and someone was trying to get rid of old stock.

Pet Treater is a new subscription box and they may still be working out some kinks in their supply chain.   And to be fair, all of the treats were USA-made and didn’t expire for at least 5 months or more.  But there didn’t seem to be any curation or theme; everything felt kind of thrown together and some of the items (night light) seemed quite random.  For what it’s worth, I’ve had a glance at the December box and it does look better (review coming soon).  So I have hope that this subscription will continue to improve.

This has been my favorite dog box this far – the value is amazing (I’m uncertain how the do it for $25 a month, but it makes sense that the get some closeout items…it’s ok with me ?) and my dog has loved everything in the two boxes he’s received! However, my pup is fortunate in that he does not have any stomach/GI issues…I hope your Nyx gets stronger with the PT Ragan!

December will be my first box from them. I signed up for a six month subscription using their Black Friday deal, so I don’t think mine is due to ship until later this week. I too have large dogs, in the 90 pound range, and have one with a particular stomach, so I appreciate getting more natural and even grain and gluten free treats. I hope this one delivers on that.

So far I am loving this subscription. I have a Labrador that although he is a large dog, is very gentle with his toys so the plush toys work well for him. Of course if I still had my Rottweiler, I am not sure any subscription box would be for him as he was quite destructive, like your Nyx! But hey Nyx has fun destroying the toys so that’s something I guess. I liked the December box better and the Christmas cards came just in time, as I had run out! Sammy enjoyed everything so far, and hope this box just keeps getting better.

Hoping Nyx does well with physical therapy, such a beautiful girl! I hate that she has IBD, battled that with my last Lab too. Thanks for updating us on how she is doing!

I really like pet treater! I agree that the November box seemed a little random, but my dog didn’t care that there wasn’t a theme, so neither do I. However, will say that the December box was ADORABLE! I loved the star wars leash (which did seem a bit random in the box) and all the Christmas themed stuff, but it’s still fun and my dog is just happy to get anything! I also think it’s important to mention that in every box, they give you the opportunity to get a free item for the following month if you send in a picture. It just adds to the value I think.

Star Wars comes out this month! That’s the tie in I’m guessing. I’M A BIT OF A STAR WARS FAN! 🙂 🙂 🙂

My “human” item was a puzzle! And not even a good puzzle I could gift, like a dollar store one. I too thought they had gotten it cheap and were throwing it in to add to the value…it was bizarre. Everything else I got was the same or very similar to yours. I signed up for the small dog version.

My “human item” in November was an oven mitt. A really mediocre product that I couldn’t find any non-Chinese information on. The December human item was much better- Christmas cards with doggie pictures on them!

The “human” items are pretty random and I’m not sure that they add much to the box (though I will probably use a couple of the cards they sent in the December box).

Got my December box last week and LOVE it. By far the best experience with dog boxes so far, and the only one I actually have referred people to. I got a STAR WARS LEASH (I was excited, can you tell?) in my box along with an insanely cute “honorary reindeer” bandanna and other stuff for Belle, my little wiener dog 🙂 I actually really like that they include something for me too. I got a Beatles water bottle last month, and some cute set of puppy Christmas cards this month. I just hope the the box stays this good 🙂

I received a very similar box from them, and I quite enjoyed it. I’ve seen many variations of the item for the “human” and they all seem pretty random. However, I received a can of Febreze so I was pleasantly surprised that I would actually get some use out of my random item.

I currently subscribe to this box for my pit bull, Coco. I actually quite like it- the toys and treats have been appropriate for a larger dog and I seem to be keeping more than I am listing for swap- which is always a positive.

Wait until your December box arrives- it is wonderfully curated and includes a hilarious letter to your dog on the “Do’s & Don’ts of Christmas”.

I actually just got the December box. I agree on the curation — it’s getting better.

I hesitate to try a dog box because even when there is an option for large dogs, they don’t really seem to understand what large dogs need. It seems like smaller dogs get better stuff.

I wish there were a ‘bespoke post’ for big dogs – leather leashes and collars, quality food bowls, substantial treats, etc.

I know what you mean. The problem I see is that “large” for most dog boxes is 50+ pounds. But there is a lot of difference between a 50 pound dog and a full grown Rottweiler (or even larger dog like a Great Dane, Great Pyrenees, Saint Bernard, etc.).
